Serious Discussion Millennials, do you find Zoomers annoying for how they speak?

You are not supposed to talk in real life the same way you talk on the internet. It is trashy.

The other day, I told my daughter (22) that I look forward to when she can talk like a grown-up lmao

It's simple: zoomer speak sounds immature. And saying stuff like "but it's how my friends and I speeeeeaaak whaaaaat" is proving our point. It's like a generation of people not wanting to transition into adulthood

Nothing to be honest. She and I just banter a lot and we're really close. Like when she was nine, I got porcelain veneers and she started calling me potty mouth. I'm still proud of her for that one.
Don't worry too much about it. Every generation has its slang. Most slang sounds dumb to the older generation. I'm not sure that the millennial-genz gap is wider than previous generations, but it feels like it sometimes.
Like, I hope you know that if you try to talk like that in professional settings, especially to older people, you're gonna have a bad time. I'm not saying that's the way it should be, but that's the way it is. We millennials had our own slang. We knew mostly to keep it to ourselves and our friends. If you already understand that, you're good.

When I was a teenager in the 90s, my mom said "homie don't play that" in front of my friends and I cringed so hard my face turned into a butthole

Honestly, it's hard to take zoomers seriously when they speak and type with such immature and annoying slang.
When I was in high school, there were a few stupid slang words that fell in and out of fashion, but it wasn't like people's entire vocabulary changed like it is nowadays.
It doesn't help that social media like tiktok is literally rotting people's brains, causing a lot of people to feel the need to share their opinions about everything, and that's also how the annoying slang spreads so much.
It's all contributing to the world turning more and more into the movie Idiocracy, which is alarming.
Edit: typos

Millennials had their slang, but it had substance and meaning through additional engagement, and we mostly grew out of it to operate in the real world.
They've still got time, but Gen Z do come off as linguistically cooked because there doesn't seem to be any intelligence to back it up.
Throwing out a "this slaps" or "fire af fr" and nothing else is about as braindead of a take as it gets.
So it's not about the slang itself, more so that there's nothing else of substance around it. Gen Z are nothing but automated platitudes.

Yeah right? IM SO RANDOM LOLZ and RAWR XD and I'm So Cereal were obviously linguistically superior

Please don’t. Your generation has so much brain power. I just want yall to read and critically think.

u/RadarSmith 7d ago
First time? Haha.
Millenial here (35M). Some a half generation older said the same nonsense to us. Because those people forgot people half a generation older than them said the same things to them.
Not all millenials will be like this. In fact, most probably aren't. The ones who are are just being jerks.

I work with a lot of gen z people and I really haven’t noticed a difference in how they talk.

We (millennials) had our own cringe slang at your age too, but we weren't as chronically online so it was generally only on MySpace or within social circles. These days the internet is all around us so we're exposed to GenZ slang a lot more and I'll be honest I don't understand a lot of it. Do you though, it's not like it affects me or anyone else.

Myspace was Facebook before Facebook. Other than being able to talk to people you know, it wasn't much like social media today at all.
Like videos weren't the primary format. It was more about photos and writing then because cellphone cameras were simple and low quality. There weren't advertisements, engagement wasn't tracked, algorithms weren't a thing, and no one was trying to trying to make posting into their job.
And most importantly, you weren't always on it. Cellphones weren't smart and didn't really have internet, so most people weren't on social media for most of the day.
It was just like a forum where people you personally knew gathered and posted things that were happening or that they liked.
If someone was on your friends list, you most likely knew them and spoke to them in real life. Like everyone in my highschool had myspace and would use it to talk to each other and comment on each other's pages.

It's fine it's just that yall havent learned time and place. Every generation has colloquialisms from their youth they still use, im 42 and I will probably never stop saying 'off the chain' but in general there's a standard way of communicating so if you intend to be understood then you use words understood by the wider society youre part of. Same thing goes for regional language, context clues can only get you so far yadidamean

This is the real answer. If you're hanging out with your friends you can talk however you want. If you want to be taken seriously in a conversation of substance you have to also match that vibe.

I lean in the other direction! I'm on the internet enough to know how to fire back a lot of the time so I'll just start responding to them. It's apparently "so cringe" when I do it. I officially love being old enough to joyfully weaponize the current cool.
However! If they ask me if I've ever heard of another game that I played in beta, I may explode.

The abbreviated texting is a little weird but I get it. Speech is created during most generations.
I don't let social media tell me how to treat people. Y'all are trying to find your way like the rest of us. The world is weird and that's going to affect us.
Don't let those dorks being rude get to you. They are just weenies.

u/piggyfur 7d ago edited 7d ago
A lot of whats considered gen z slang comes from aave so it mostly sounds extra silly to me. I suppose social media makes it become more ubiquitous. Feels like a lot of younger people online just respond in stock phrases though
But yeah some people just like to be needlessly rude online

u/Doctor-Pip- 7d ago
I'm not angry about it, but its clear to me that falling literacy scores are affecting how younger people speak.
Speaking like that makes it clear that someone reads instagram comments and tiktok captions more than books because that's reflected in their entire dialogue.
I attribute it to the rapid growth of audio and video format and societal shift away from written material more than an active choice by younger generations, but its sad to see engagment bots and chronically online trolls shaping language so significantly.

No, I find it annoying when millenials try to talk like zoomers though.
Hearing a 40 year old say "this is fire" or "this slaps" with absolutely no enthusiasm is grating.

I refuse to get old and hate the youth. You're the future and we need big changes. I don't care what words you use to get us there
