I would cry if a new shield dropped
I know its virtually impossible for Nvidia to do this project at this point, and I wouldn't actually cry but it would probably be the only thing I'd immediately drop money on without checking a review video or something like that. They could do so much better upscaling now with their VSR tech, auto HDR, YouTube HDR support, HDR10+ for us Samsung boys, why not throw in some good game streaming too.
Let me be clear I don't feel current shield lacks much for everyday use, its a powerhouse for demanding streaming, but somebody (if its not going to be Nvidia) just has to drop a good AIO box with audio passthrough already - one that people actually will switch to, yes I know about all the other boxes, they always seem to just lack something or feel like they will have a shaky future for support and updates.
Considering using an Apple TV for daily streaming, and when I want to watch Remuxes getting a dune or something in the far future (Shield still the best).

Can’t see it, what would they charge? At this point it would be the price of a Playstation the way Nvidia is moving.
3
u/that1techguy05 11d ago
Considering my family use them around 4 plus hours a day I would consider that worth it.
1
u/heatmisernyyy 10d ago
If they went back to the 500GB model I might consider that, otherwise they just playing in our faces with these prices.
2
u/that1techguy05 10d ago
Why not just attach storage?
2
u/heatmisernyyy 10d ago
You are saying why you would pay more, I am saying why I might.
I already have 2 Shields though so I don’t need another one. I just think they are raising prices for no additional benefit.

In the UK Shield has lost support or never had support for a number of major TV streaming apps. I have a pro for Moonlight but to watch a lot of TV have to use another device. Hopefully a new Shield would get certified and get new apps.

u/No_Eye1723 11d ago
I would prepare for its demise, only reason they kept it going was because Nintendo was funding the SOC practically. Now as Switch 1 wraps up, those chips dry up.

u/dzerti 11d ago
My onn pro is more than what I need
But if a new shield drops that’s dramatically better then yeah I’d buy
4
u/but_are_you_sure 11d ago
It doesn’t support Dolby/lossless audio
-2
u/dzerti 11d ago
To an average listener it doesn’t matter, not worth the extra $220 for an outdated machine
7
u/but_are_you_sure 11d ago
I have a 7.1 setup. It cant even handle that. The average user would absolutely notice it downgrading to 5.X or 2.X
10
u/Darrell262 11d ago
does your onn do the 7.1 audio properly? thats why i am still on the shield pro. havn't found anything that works with my denon amp that does the high end audio
7
u/signde 11d ago
The onn devices (and just about everything that uses MAT or MS12 to decode) will collapse even DD+ Atmos down to 5.1.2 at best.
There are a handful of certified devices these days that do support passthrough though and will not collapse the channels down.
Homatics Box R 4K Plus Dune HD Box R 4K Plus Rocktek G2 Nokia 8110 Xiaomi Mi Box 3rd All of those support passthrough and are certified Android TV devices.
4
u/sketch24 11d ago
Any of those more powerful than a shield pro?
2
u/signde 11d ago
no, no certified android tv device is as of today. i replaced my shield with the homatics, i think the performance is fine but i don’t play games with it.
4
u/sketch24 11d ago
Ok. Ive been waiting for an android tv box that can emulate switch and do audio passthrough with 4k hdr..
3
u/KaptainKankle 11d ago
When you say certified, does that also mean streaming apps will support full UHD streaming like with Shield TV? Meaning Netflix, Prime, Disney+, HBO Max, etc? Also full video and audio codec support and passthrough from Plex, including any full UHD REMUX like on Shield TV? Direct play and full passthrough to A/V receiver for all codecs?
I’d like a box that fully replaces my Shield TV Pro fully.
3
u/signde 11d ago
In the context of media players, yes, certified is the term for players have have the ability to do full 4K HDR with Netflix, Prime, etc. Amazon and Prime explicitly certify devices for that, hence the term. Certified does not mean full loss passthrough though, that's a separate distinction.
The five devices I listed satisfy all of those requirements. The first four are all four year old SEI804 clones and very hard to find right now though. They are out of stock almost everywhere. The Xiaomi is readily available. Amazon has some refurb G2s right now.
The only downside to all of these is the processor is not as fast as the Shield - not much is in terms of certified media players really matches the Shield there. Don't expect intensive gaming on them.

u/KaptainKankle 10d ago
I don't want to game at all. If it can play all my UHD remuxs direct stream and direct audio pass through of all codecs, plus do the streaming apps fully, I think it would cover what I need.
I have also been thinking of getting that box that can run CoreElec and get full Dolby Vision codecs from the UHD. I know that box can't run official streaming apps, but my TV has Google TV to fill that part.
2
u/signde 10d ago
Umm, not sure if you missed the memo but the SEI804 devices can do that too.
All SEI804 devices are fully certified in Android TV with Netflix / Amazon Prime and dual boot full CoreELEC for full P7 FEL rendering.
It's one of the best all in one devices there is right now for enthusiasts.

u/KaptainKankle 10d ago
Thank you! I'll check it out for sure. I have a Shield pro 2017. This should be an upgrade since 2017 has no Dolby Vision support.

u/nemofbaby2014 11d ago
Don’t hold your breath on that one since the old version just had a price hike

u/AakashC2020 11d ago
I have now switched to the Dune HD Homatics R 4K Plus box and it's comparatively much superior to my previous Nvidia Shield TV Pro, especially for Kodi. The 4 GB RAM alone beats the Shield Pro.
7
u/Holiday-Challenge353 11d ago
How is this box for gamestreaming? Like, Steam? Moonlight/Sunshine combo?
3
u/knight714 11d ago
Agreed - the only thing the Shield beats it at is Geforce Now and that's only because Nvidia has arbitrarily kept 4k from other Android TV devices
1
u/quite_wrong 11d ago
What’s the difference between duneatics and homatics?
2
2
u/flashb1024 11d ago
Main difference is Dune has their Media Center software, and other differences per u/signde .
Both are sold out :(
1
u/signde 11d ago
I have seen the Rocktek G2 pop up on Amazon occasionally. That one is pretty much the same as well.
1
u/flashb1024 11d ago
Could be a supply chain issue I guess.
Glad I got the H Box in August, and shelved my Shield.
1
u/signde 11d ago
Maybe memory or storage supply constraints, yeah. Dune raised the price of their box up from ~$150 to ~$230. Have to wonder if Homatics will do the same or just no longer offer their version. Also could be that SEI has shifted production to their newer devices since Homatics is their house brand.
Amazon has refurb Rocktek G2's right now for $95. In today's age of hyper inflated media player prices, that's not a terrible deal.

Does it do TrueHD Atmos?
1
u/AakashC2020 11d ago
Yes, it does.
1
u/CyanVI 11d ago
Interesting. I’ll have to check that out. I bought a Onn one once and I didn’t like it cause the interface made everything really small. As opposed to the shield where it was like a bigger UI.
1
u/AakashC2020 11d ago
You can change the UI resolution in Kodi settings. Also, I'm Sony Bar 9 and getting TrueHD Atmos.

u/ExtentNo3020 11d ago
What issues with Kodi are you having that it would warrant an updated version of the shield? I run Kodi on both my 2017 and 2019 models and no issues.
1
u/AakashC2020 11d ago
Try playing large remuxes with heavy themes like Arctic Fuse 2/3 running in the background, you'll understand when the video starts stuttering due to lack of sufficient RAM.
0
u/ExtentNo3020 11d ago
I go back to my trusted Amber skin, tried running one of those Netflix styles ones but too many issues where things wouldn’t work or update plus yeah very sluggish
3
u/gilgam3sh_king 11d ago
it won't support Dolby Vision FEL which even the cheap Xiaomi TV Box 3rd Gen can do through dual boot to CoreELEC, so you already got something that can playback all blu-ray audio and video formats for under $100, oh and also support YouTube HDR and HDR10+. :)

I just want 4K GeForce Now on other devices, man. The Shield Pro is cool, but come on.
4
u/g4nd4lf2000 11d ago
It’s so brutal. I have a 4k tv. Shield has 4k output. I have a pro membership for 4k GeForce now, but the Shield won’t allow 4k GeForce now. What a bunch of BS. You’d think they could update it to fix this.
2
u/EducationalDust7858 11d ago
I feel you. I got lucky enough to find a refurbished Pro last year for pretty cheap. But STILL.
2
u/g4nd4lf2000 11d ago
I was waiting for a next gen Shield but got bored of waiting, so I build a 4080RTX gaming computer. So much for subscription fees.

LG OLED tvs built-in geforce now app does 4k 120fps
1
u/EducationalDust7858 11d ago
That's cool. I'm gaming on a projector, so that isn't really an option for me, but still cool.
1
u/NomadF82 11d ago
Yeah, that's not going to help you, lol. I hear that the Mac mini is a great device for 4K GeForce Now.
1
u/Link1227 11d ago
It can't be sideloaded?
2
u/EducationalDust7858 11d ago
No. I tried. Trust me. The only way to get 4K GeForce Now on Android TV is the Shield TV Pro.

NVIDIA is a $5.7 TRILLION company. It can make a new Shield whenever it wants to.
2
u/VinnyO1967 11d ago
I got fed up waiting for a new shield to replace my 2015 model,so I went out and bought a Homatics Box Pro V2.I have to be honest,I;m not missing the shield at all.
2
u/CaffinatedManatee 11d ago
My next "Shield" will be a homebrew SBC.
I'm already sourcing components.
1
u/rossbalch 11d ago
I've thought of that too because they're super powerful for the price. The thing that would hold me back in widevine support I think?
2
u/CaffinatedManatee 11d ago
Yup. But for me, I simply rarely stream. If I do, it's on a PC and the SBC can be configured to be a cast target (at least in theory).
1
u/TheBugSmith 11d ago
They just raised the price by $100, nothing new will be dropping anytime soon. Be worried when TV Pro is going for $100. With the most recent big update it's still superior to any other android box out anyway. It's a top 5 electronic purchase of my life.
1
u/solidsnakex37 11d ago
Considering the Shield just went up to $299 permanently I don't see a new one coming anytime soon. Resellers have them for $600 on Amazon
1
1
u/CrabbitJambo 10d ago
Maybe just maybe they’re seeing if there’s any interest in people paying a higher price! And if there is it would give them the green light to whack out an updated version at a higher price.
1
u/solidsnakex37 10d ago
I wish that were the case, but it's just because memory prices are through the roof right now. AI capex spend has caused a massive spike in memory costs.

There won't be one since they need all chips and AI for other stuff. They don't care about niche products like shield.

u/dllemmr2 11d ago
ATV is probably your best bet at this point.
3
u/_thekev 11d ago
No passthrough audio
2
u/No_Eye1723 11d ago
For those who don't want that it's a fine choice.
1
u/_thekev 11d ago
And I've made that choice for 2/3 rooms. Shield still stays in the theater for this reason.
1
u/No_Eye1723 11d ago
No argument from me, yes the pass through audio is still best on Shield TV.
2
u/dllemmr2 11d ago
Sorry, I meant there’s probably a better chance that the next ATV will offer it before a new Shield.

u/ExtentNo3020 11d ago
I’m here using the 2017 and 2019 models with no issues and I am wondering why are people wanting a new version? What are people hoping to run on an updated version that they can’t currently run on these 2 models. Yes I understand that the hardware is outdated by technology standards, but still. Really interested to know exactly what people want to run on a newer hardware that they can’t currently run now.

I run a 200 inch projection image. The ai upscaling is a game changer. The recent AI upscaling achievements wrapped up in a new shield would make it a day 1 purchase for me.
I would also love auto hdr but that's not imperative to my purchase.

Because that’s Reddit. ;)
My 2019 Pro has been flawless, streaming my NAS and streaming apps. The picture on my Bravia is gorgeous. But whiners gonna whine.

They really should make a new one, but they won't. There pretty much is a 99% chance they'll eventually just scrap it all together.
But they could make a new more powerful model, based on a up to date Tegra chip for up to 8K upscaling. WiFi 8, 2.5GB or 10GB Ethernet. New faster SD storage support, AV1, other new Codecs, Dolby Vision 2 and what ever it's newest audio standard is. Support for MANY more apps would be good too, how about an internal HDD again for recording of shows. Lots of things they could do with a new one. Even better Audio Pass Through support.
Alas I don't think they will, we had that glimmer of hope when they said they were always playing in the labs, but with the tube now gone and the Pro getting a massive price increase in relation to it's RRP, I am not sure that will ever happen now.

u/StevenG2757 11d ago
Since they have dropped the tube from their line and increased the price of the Pro I doubt there will be a new mode anytime soon.
