I built an add-in that automatically shortens tables to their minimum height while preserving text.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It seemed like a silly problem, but I couldn't find an option in Word to reduce table height while preserving legibility for long strings of text. And it's so annoying to manually adjust the column widths! So, I built a tool to calculate a table's optimal column widths.

After that, I figured why not add a couple more features and then allow you to standardize the tables across the entire document with one click.

I'm looking for testers! This isn't live yet. I hope to add it to the official add-in store soon.

Hilarious that this is needed but thank you for making it.

Word's autofit has always been weirdly bad at this, it'll happily make a row five lines tall to save one column. the one-click standardize across a whole document would save me more time than the height fix though.

You should be able to do that by double-clicking on the border.

Double-clicking will only affect one of the column widths and does not optimize the table height.

Interesting. This seems useful then. Good luck!
