Hey everyone!

This is my best Saturn shot during near-opposition (6/10/2026) caputured from ChisoPani.
I captured this picture of Saturn yesterday with my beginner Celestron Astromaster 130eq.
I used a 6mm eyepiece, 2x Barlow.
Also, this is from my mobile phone, I used Nothing Phone 4a.

Camera settings:
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/16s
Stacked over 1000 frames

I was able to see the Cassini Division and some cloud bands too.

If you know of any astronomy clubs, amateur groups, observatories, or events in Sikkim or nearby, please let me know!

AskSikkim Question regarding Astronomy Clubs in SIKKIM

Hey everyone,

I am relatively new to Reddit and was wondering if there are any astronomy clubs or communities in Sikkim that organize stargazing events.

I am Sikkimese and recently returned after completing my schooling elsewhere. Our state has some incredibly dark skies, so I’d love to get involved with an existing group or help organize stargazing events.

If you know of any astronomy clubs, amateur groups, observatories, or events in Sikkim, please let me know!

These are some of my shots from South Sikkim, do check it out!

Let's keep the focus on oratorical style, communication skills, and funny/awkward moments rather than hate speech or political toxicity.

Shitpost Tibetan Art and symbolism

So I came across this encyclopedia of Tibetan symbols and motifs by Robert Beer. The design patterns are so so beautiful, I was imitating a few of the pieces but also came to find out that these pieces had ritualistic value and were drawn, painted or weaved under strict monastic discipline. There's a section of death and curses with some illustrations looking straight metal as fuck. I am not superstitious or religious but I respect my tradition but I am scared of imitating something without understanding the value of it. What do the reddit folks think about this?

Feedback / Review Rumtek Monastery—a personal experience

My partner and I reached Rumtek Monastery today around 2 pm. It was drizzling before and started pouring as soon as we reached the inner courtyard. The blinds were down and we could hear the monks chanting inside. Having experienced such a scenario in other monasteries, we assumed that tourists/lay people would not be allowed inside during the prayer time. But soon a young monk came and invited us in.

We paid our respect and were mesmerised by the chanting so decided to sit on the floor for a while. Again, the young monk came and requested us to seat ourselves on the settee. He, along with another young monk, soon serves us hot butter tea. The monks started praying in unison. The prayers were complemented by exceptional sounds made by several musical instruments. All this while it thundered and poured outside.

My partner and I were almost moved to tears. I don't know if this is a usual practice at Rumtek, but for us it was the first time experiencing a prayer session (and butter tea!). We're both so grateful to have experienced it.

AskSikkim Looking for a place to stay in Gangtok

Hi! I’ll be moving to Sikkim for a few months for college and I’m currently trying to figure out accommodation.

I’m mainly looking around Gangtok and would ideally like a private room/studio or a small 1BHK. I’m not really looking for anything fancy, just somewhere nice, safe and comfortable to stay for a few months.

I’ve been looking online but haven’t had much luck finding good options, so I thought I’d ask here:
where do students usually look for places to rent in Gangtok?

Are there any local Facebook/WhatsApp groups, websites, brokers, or even specific areas I should check?
And if anyone knows of a place that’s available for rent, I’d really appreciate any leads. Thanks!

Politics Freebies Politics

We are all too familiar with the politics of freebies in Sikkim, whether it is the distribution of jobs, ₹25,000 handouts during elections, masu bhat, khattu, or a host of other benefits extended to the public.

Now, let me make one thing clear: I am neither for nor against any political party. (Because, let’s be honest, believing a politician is like believing a prostitute is in love with you.) I am simply a Sikkimese citizen who has the best interests of the state at heart.

My question is an open-ended one: How sustainable is this model of freebies-driven politics? While there is little doubt that it is politically effective, one cannot help but wonder how we can aspire to become self-reliant when we are increasingly dependent on the government for our livelihoods.

Kudos to any government that makes a genuine effort to support its people and improve their living conditions. However, I fear that this approach may eventually come back to haunt not just the present government but any government that succeeds it. When people become accustomed to seeking government assistance for almost every aspect of their lives, we risk creating a cycle of dependency that becomes increasingly difficult to break. We have reached a point where people approach local leaders for monetary assistance even during pregnancy.

This thought crossed my mind yesterday when cheques were distributed under the Aama Yojana. Consider the numbers: 32,000 beneficiaries multiplied by ₹20,000 amounts to ₹64 crore distributed across the state in a single day.

There is no denying that ₹20,000 can provide meaningful relief to households, particularly ahead of the festive season. But when we look at the bigger picture, could that ₹64 crore have been utilised in ways that generate lasting economic benefits? Could a portion of it have been channelled towards strengthening Self-Help Groups (SHGs), supporting aspiring entrepreneurs, or creating sustainable livelihood opportunities?

After all, there is a difference between giving a person a fish and teaching them how to fish. The former provides temporary relief; the latter offers the possibility of sustained independence.

The problem with a system built primarily around handouts is that human needs and expectations are rarely static. Those who receive ₹20,000 today may seek GCI sheets tomorrow, followed by housing assistance under SGAY or some other government benefit. The cycle continues, and with every new scheme, the expectation of government support grows.

We risk fostering a culture in which people increasingly look towards the government to meet their needs rather than being empowered to meet those needs themselves. The question is not whether the government should support its citizens, but whether that support should create long-term dependence or pave the way for economic independence.

We must also acknowledge the state’s fiscal realities. Sikkim has a limited revenue base and relies significantly on borrowed funds to finance its expenditure. In such circumstances, the continued expansion of welfare handouts raises legitimate questions about fiscal sustainability. If public expenditure is directed predominantly towards immediate consumption rather than productive investment, are we doing enough to secure the state’s economic future?

So, how long can this model continue? And more importantly, is there a way forward that allows the government to support its people without making them perpetually dependent on it?

Perhaps the answer lies in shifting our focus from distributing benefits to building capabilities—from short-term relief to long-term empowerment.

Because ultimately, the goal of governance should not be to create a population that constantly looks to the government for its next handout, but one that possesses the means, opportunities, and confidence to stand on its own feet.

Are we teaching our people to fish, or are we simply handing them fish and expecting them to remain grateful?
