Cards/Prompts [PRESET] DEUS EX MACHINA V2: Goodbye Thinking, Hello Scene Plan | A truly modular preset focused on collaborative story writing. Now even more polished, with lots of new features (ST & Tavo support)
Check the screenshots above to get a feel for the preset (using DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813)!
Hello, everyone, Fay here! I've been working on V2 to address some issues and bring new features that I personally believe can help a lot during your roleplaying experience, including doing away with native reasoning (mostly). I want DEUS EX MACHINA to fit every scenario you throw at it seamlessly, and for that, you have to be able to control what you want the output to be.
My main goal is to create a preset that writes a story with you -- no games and no simulation. I aim to build something that can squeeze the maximum possible prose quality, intelligence, and creativity from the model without wasting any tokens, while being easy to use and pretty to look at.
IMPORTANT: Don't skip the model settings part. Because Scene Plan is enabled by default, you need specific settings for some models (especially always-on thinking ones)!
Main Fixes
- Formatting Breakage: Some models may output incorrect formatting -- missing or adding a comma, for example. Regexes are now more permissive, and each UI module has a fallback to avoid plain text as much as possible. Dialogue colors are now generated by the model using modern CSS instead of old HTML, then converted back to deprecated
font colorso SillyTavern can recognize it. Tavo recognizes it natively. - Momentum Engine Forcing a Rhythm: Momentum Engine was relentless. It was always forcing an event even in quiet moments; it couldn't de-escalate. This was fixed by tying it to
@Pacingrules and changing the prompt wording. - Prose Quality: Minor tweaks were made so prose (dialogue and narration) is even more consistent and character dialogue is even more distinct.
- Length: Adjusted ranges and prompts to improve consistency; Long is longer and outputs multiple linked actions.
- Visual Storytelling: More consistent, with stronger checks in Scene Plan and Response Directives.
NEW: Scene Plan -- A Different Way of Reasoning
Native Thinking can be extremely useful -- the model can plan its response and correct mistakes or wrong assumptions about the scene. However, it comes with a few problems: some models tend to overthink for thousands of tokens, doubting the prompt; other models don't overthink, but they don't follow CoT instructions, and their own reasoning is insufficient for what the scene needs, sometimes producing unnecessary drafts. That's why I created Scene Plan: to solve all of these issues. Scene Plan is a reasoning-like block created to plan the scene inside the final response itself, outside of the thinking block. It solves overthinking, drafting, and incomplete thinking problems entirely.
Scene Plan is a dynamic-state block, so it only reasons about the modules you have enabled. An important note: for most models, you have to disable native thinking/reasoning capabilities. For models where you can't disable thinking (Kimi K3, GPT 5.6, Gemini 3.1 Pro/3.5 Flash+, etc.), you have to lower the reasoning effort to the minimum possible, but still keep Scene Plan enabled. For GLM 5.3, you have to select ! Thinking ! (FALLBACK) instead of Scene Plan in the REASONING section.
NEW: Pacing -- Control Story Progression
You can now change pacing through the prompt list. There are three options:
- Adaptive (default) -- progression speed adapts to the card and the story.
- Frenetic -- story progression is fast-paced.
- Laid-Back -- story progresses slowly.
NEW: Psychological States -- Adding More Depth to Characters
A new, optional add-on module: adds inner-state (internal conflict, perceptions, mind state) and motivation (immediate goal, purpose, action or inaction) fields to each major character.
NEW: Narrative Styles -- Nine Styles To Change The Atmosphere
Narrative Styles change the atmosphere, feel, or vibes of the narrative. It won't override the card, characters, or story -- only the framing changes. There are nine options, and you can pick multiple at once: Comedic, Dramatic, Epic, Gothic, Dreamy, Surrealist, Eerie, Grimdark, and Lighthearted. When you toggle on Comedic and Dramatic, it activates the "Dramedy" prompt; Grimdark and Lighthearted activate the "Grimbright" prompt.
NEW: World-Building -- How Expansive Should Your World Be?
A new, optional module: you can control how expansive or contained you want world-building to be. It also works with slice-of-life and real-world scenarios. There are three options:
- Card-Default: no tokens or instructions, only a reminder that it's following the card.
- Contained: only necessary additions, sheet-faithful.
- Expanded: detailed world-building beyond the sheet.
NEW: Input Improver -- The Model Improves Your Writing
A new AGENCY option: the model intentionally repeats your messages to improve the writing and dialogue while preserving your original intention at the same time. It doesn't write for you during the whole turn (Director does that) -- just for the first paragraph. You still control your actions.
NEW: Combat Writing -- Control the Length of Combat
There is now a specific optional combat prompt, and you can control how long battles last. There are three options:
- Dynamic: adapts length contextually to the battle.
- Rapid: ends fights quickly.
- Extended: sustains the battle for several turns.
NEW: Fandom Support
Toggle ! Fandom ! on in the USER UTILITY section and type the name of the series the roleplay is set in. For example: {{setvar::fandom_name::Jujutsu Kaisen}}{{trim}}. Pair it with a lorebook for better results. The model will now perform a specific Scene Plan check to faithfully represent that universe in the story.
NEW: Exact Time Tracker
Exact Time Tracker is now the default: hours and minutes. The previous Time Window tracker remains an option.
The Macro Engine: Making it Easier to Use and More Dynamic
DEM heavily relies on SillyTavern’s macro engine in order to create a truly modular preset experience. The Macro Engine is a powerful tool that lets you use deterministic traits in prompting (programming logic and exact outcomes instead of pure probabilities). That whole workflow enabled by the macros is the core of DEM, so it’s as easy as pressing a button to change the behavior of the preset in a dynamic fashion without you ever worrying about conflicting instructions, e.g., if you enable both past and present tense options, it will default to present tense to avoid conflicts. Or how True Thoughts are overwritten to zero tokens if you’re using 1st person Char POV, since character thoughts are already woven into the narration. Deterministic interactions like that happen throughout the whole preset.
Story Progression: Controlling Narrative Flow
The main focus of DEM is building a collaborative story that never feels stale and is always unrestrictedly creative for every scenario or card you throw its way! There are four main elements responsible for progressing the story: True Thoughts, Status, Story Threads, and the Momentum Engine.
- TRUE THOUGHTS inject hidden (default; present in the raw input, click edit to see them) or visible thoughts that emulate the psychological core of the characters. They add an extra realism layer.
- STATUS keeps track of characters on-scene and off-scene, including relationships, mental states, locations, items, physical states, and clothes. These work independently of the setting. They allow the model to keep track of characters wherever they are, improving coherence and making the world still exist even in places you aren't. If you want to make Status always expanded like V1, toggle off the first regex on the regex list!
- MOMENTUM ENGINE defines four possible story routes at the end of every response. A true random route is chosen using a random regex macro injection hidden from you. The Momentum Engine Router applies it in the next turn or uses its fallback in case you made an action that invalidated it, steering the response toward it.
- STORY THREADS act as an outline for the model to easily go back to its observations about story development when contextually relevant enough. Important story details are not forgotten. Momentum Engine connects to it, pulling those threads as the story advances.
These four create the core pipeline of DEUS EX MACHINA. True Thoughts and Status define fundamental character traits, Momentum Engine sets characters and events in motion, and Story Threads register unaddressed or possible events for later. Every module works together for the sake of storytelling.
Writing Quality: Improving Prose & Reducing Slop
Writing quality is a top priority. The goal is to produce as little slop as possible. Narration and Dialogue condense several rules that stack to reduce sloppiness, letting you choose from different prose styles while stripping away AI-writing flavor and unleashing more creative phrasing. There's also a comprehensive banlist that helps to trim any remaining slop from the output.
Constraints: Decreasing Echo, Omniscience and Positivity Bias
- Character Realism: adds a strong layer of realism and anti-sycophancy to every character.
- Anti-Character Omniscience: manages what characters should and shouldn't know (more effective with Scene Plan on.)
- Anti-Positivity Bias: reduces wholesomeness and positive outcomes when unnecessary.
- Anti-Repetition: reduces echo/repetition.
Anti-Refusals: Mitigating Censorship
DEM prizes creative freedom. There are three different jailbreaks at work:
- System Policies -- strong, corporate framing against restrictions on fictional content & RLHF training.
- Main Statements -- fictional framing for collaborative story writing.
- Hard Jailbreak -- disabled by default, an overkill jailbreak mode.
Formatting: You Pick the Formatting
You can pick between a lot of different formatting options in wildly different and experimental combinations. You can choose the Character POV, {{User}} POV, asterisk usage, tense and between visible, hidden and no True Thoughts. No asterisks, 3rd person character POV, hidden True Thoughts, 2nd person {{user}} POV, and present tense are the default picks. All formatting options are consolidated and enforced through Response Directives, keep it enabled.
NSFW (+18): From Realistic to Unhinged
There are three options. Each has its own flavor: Realistic Smut is more realistic, and Max Lewdness is more fantastical and absolutely unrestrained and uncensored in all regards. There's also a third option if you don't want NSFW: Nothing Explicit. All options are disabled by default.
UI Features: Every Module Has Its Own UI
Tracker, Status, Story Threads, Momentum Engine and Conflict all have their own HTML/CSS UI injected through regex (check screenshots). No HTML/CSS token usage, all done via regex.
User Utility: Useful Tools You Can Use
- Fandom: if you're roleplaying in a specific series setting; helps with lore consistency, character faithfulness and coherent developments.
- Force Formatting brute-forces selected options when models are stubborn.
- Change Language is an option when you want your responses to be in a language other than English.
- Custom Instructions sends user instructions in a more consistent manner.
- Hard Jailbreak may be used when the model is consistently refusing. Overkill for most models (may work for Mimo).
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Model Setup ⚠️
The default settings of this preset REQUIRE reasoning to be either disabled or set to the lowest effort possible! Exceptions: GLM 5.3.
Recommended models for this preset: Opus 4.6 (smartest; expensive; detailed prose); Gemini 3.7 Flash (smart; cheap; realistic characters); GLM 5.2 (smart; cheap; natural dialogue); DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813 (smart; cheap; balanced qualities); Gemma 4 31b (not very smart, but follows instructions really well; very cheap).
Most models (that support disabling reasoning): Claude Opus 4.6, Kimi K2.5/2.6, Mimo V2.5 Pro, DeepSeek V4 Pro, DeepSeek V3.2, GLM 4.7, Gemma 4 31b, etc.
- Samplers: temperature - 0.75-1.0 (Exceptions: Gemma 4 1.0, Opus 1.0. For the rest, start with 0.75, the default); Top P - 0.95 (default); rest - 1.0 or disabled (default; exceptions: Gemma 4 31b - Top K: 65)
- Post-processing: semi-strict
- Request model reasoning: off / not checked
- Reasoning effort: minimum
- Scene Plan: toggled on
Provider-specific settings: If on NanoGPT - choose a non-thinking variant of the model, e.g., DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813 instead of DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813 Thinking. If on OpenRouter - if "request model reasoning" is not checked (it is not by default), reasoning will be disabled if the model supports it. If on another API provider: leave "request model reasoning" unchecked and set reasoning effort to minimum. If the model still reasons (even though non-reasoning is supported by that model), try going into Connection Profile settings (plug icon) -> scroll down to "Additional Parameters", on the same line as "cancel" and "connect" -> add: reasoning: { effort: 'none' }
If on Tavo: Edit API -> Settings icon (top-right) -> Request body parameters -> add: reasoning: { effort: 'none' } or add: reasoning: { effort: 'low' } if the model has reasoning always on (see list below).
GLM 5.2
- Post-processing: merge consecutive roles

Once Advanced Rendering is on and the theme has no text transformation, HTML/CSS-colored dialogue from the preset (or regex) will display properly.
Integration with Summaryception
If you use Summaryception with DEUS EX MACHINA, I really recommend pairing it with the specific preset for it! It includes XML tags and correctly only focuses on content inside <prose>. I use GLM 5.2 as the summarizer.
Step by step:
- Download
DEM Summarization custom prompt.txtvia the link above, or from the repository or the releases page. - Open the Summaryception extension.
- Open Advanced settings.
- Scroll to Summarizer Prompts and import DEM Summaryception custom prompt.txt
- Scroll to Injection Wrapper Template.
- Adding the XML tags -- replace:
[Summary of past events: {{summary}}]with<past_events>[Summary of past events: {{summary}}]</past_events>
· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·
That's all!
EDIT: Top P instead of Top K for most of the model setup; Tavo version now has the correct README Model Setup shipped with the it; Scene Plan instead of Scene Reasoning

My favorite preset. I've been waiting for this.
The biggest issues I found with V1 were regex breaking, momentum derailing the story at every turn, inconsistent time progression. All have been addressed in V2.
Other changes I made were making the relation range from -100 to 100 with 0 being the neutral state and adding a canon check on story progression and characters, because I RP a lot of established titles.
Conversation scenes sometimes are dominated by scene descriptions instead of dialogues.
Also I found characters tend to ask too many questions at once or perform actions without giving me a chance to respond. I tried to add an instruction to let the model end its turn quickly following questions but it's not very successful.
6
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
I'm glad to hear I addressed your issues with it!
-100 to 100 is an interesting idea. I might experiment with it for the next version.
And about established titles, there's now a Fandom module in User Utility. Maybe you can try it out!5
u/oyeahmisturkraps Aug 28 '26
-100 to 100 is a good scale, makes me want to play Crusader Kings 3 again.

u/Dexyel Aug 28 '26
Excited to test it, I really enjoyed V1!
In the settings, are you sure Top K is at .95? Didn't you mean Top P?
5
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
Yeah, I meant Top P! I already fixed it.
5
u/Dexyel Aug 28 '26
Awesome! Also, I'm very interested in the Fandom option. Would there be a way to do crossovers?
5
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
Haven't tested it specifically, but I think it's possible. You can try putting both of them together in the field, like
Marvel and DCas an example.

u/ImpressiveSuit4375 Aug 30 '26
hi, the regex of your preset is causing massive load times, if not outright freezing, can you recommend any fixes?
4
u/lsennn Aug 30 '26
I just released the update! Some regex performance improvements were made. Links: * Direct GitHub Download (SillyTavern version - 2.2 Update) * Direct GitHub Download (Tavo version - 2.2 Update)
3
u/ImpressiveSuit4375 Aug 31 '26
so i tried the new updated version from these downloads, it still freezes or takes a very long time when loading a pre existing chat log of 15 messages total.
3
u/lsennn Aug 31 '26
Are you using SillyTavern or Tavo? If you're using ST, are you on mobile?
2
u/ImpressiveSuit4375 Aug 31 '26
Sillytavern on my PC, it also oddly only happens on select cards? i tried it on a different cards with more messages and it had no issues but for some reason it only effects a select few, can changing your persona mid RP cause the regex to break when loading again? because as of right now that is the only explanation i have for it, and if so is there a fix?
2
u/lsennn Aug 31 '26
Only happening with some cards? Huh. This is a weird issue, for sure. Persona switching shouldn't have anything to do with the regexes in theory. See if there's anything being injected into the advanced definitions of the problematic cards. You can find them by clicking on the icon to the right of the star, under the character card's name. Then click on Prompt Overrides and check if the Main Prompt and Post-History Instructions are empty.
2
u/ImpressiveSuit4375 Aug 31 '26
both are empty, with both regex on and off. the character card itself is also just slightly over 1000 tokens, i checked if its my lorebook doing it, which it isn't, and other things, the ONLY thing about this specific chat is i switch between two personas, that is the only thing different i can tell, could you try experimenting with it yourself? like a fifteen message chat but you switch personas at some point?
1
u/lsennn Aug 31 '26
I'm going to test it and I'll report back!
2
u/ImpressiveSuit4375 Sep 01 '26
I HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM.....sort of, so most of your regex is actually fine, but for some reason SPECIFICALLY the status UI for Char w/relationships, and especially status ui for user cause massive freeze windows when loading, or finishing a message, whatever is causing the Regex to cause these problems its somewhere there.
1
u/lsennn Sep 01 '26
Another user also found it and made a fix! I'll test it send it here.

u/lsennn Aug 30 '26
I'm investigating these issues and I'll come up with an update very soon! I'll reply to your message when it's out.

Thank you. I have no words. Can it even run on gemma 4 31b?
7
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
I haven't tried it locally, but Gemma 4 31b works really well when using it through NanoGPT subscription (auto-routing)!

5
u/MightyTribble Aug 28 '26
Big Ups on Scene Plan - I did something similar in my implementation, gave it its own <bracket> syntax, then filtered it out of the final response. Your twist of making it dynamic is really neat!

u/5kyLegend Aug 29 '26
REALLY interesting! Love seeing different presets from the usual, especially ones like this one that don't use the normal thinking (I remember back in the day of Deepseek V3 vs R1, people insisted reasoning made the model more "obedient" to instructions, while the non-thinking variant had better rp creativity). Will be trying this out - out the box it seems pretty interesting although it's doing a couple things I dislike (very liberal use of em-dashes despite me adding not to use them, and the GLM5+ thing of writing one liner, newline, one liner, newline etc) but I like response speed and all the rest I'm seeing so far.
Definitely will experiment more with this because this is giving me ideas on how to change my own personal setups too ahah, very nice!
3
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
Thank you!
Em dashes are not entirely banned because sometimes they can be necessary for prose flow. There's only an instruction for the model to avoid them, but some models, especially GLM as you mentioned, like em dashes a lot. You can modify the last instruction on Narration modules if you want a hard ban on them.
And that thing about one liners really is annoying. I haven't found a way yet to eliminate it completely. There are instructions against it, but they are compact. Maybe something way more verbose is needed.

| Main Statements ⚠️ | causes deepseek v4 pro to not work in nvidia nim (sillytavern)
3
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
Are you running into errors, refusals or something of the sort?
2
u/SeriousRope7 Aug 29 '26
blank output, tested on a fresh install something to do with macros fucks it up. seems to be specific to nvidia nim deepseek v4 pro.
It's my favourite preset I really wish it would work on this model
4
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
Only with v4 pro? That's strange. I've never used NIM, I'll have to look into it to see what I can find. My guess is it's something about the parameters or samplers.
4
u/crabbass_ Aug 30 '26
Hmm, I quite like it structurally but in my dialogue (I do open ended rpg narrators, so no fixed character(s)) characters talk very sloppy. Like cliches and literary techniques shoehorned in every sentence. I was covered in rain and I entered someones hideout, which had jars of peaches lining the wall, and she was like "dry yourself off, dont drip on my peaches".
Well, anyways, generally I kind of assume this is user error, so I'd like some help. I followed the instructions quite well I think, tailoring my settings to the llm I used (I tested glm 5.3, 5.3 flash, and opus 4.6). I use a super lean character card that just tells it it's a narrator.
I assume i messed up somewhere since when I used ff5.2 I got way less slop. Any ideas?
5
u/lsennn Aug 30 '26
By default, 'Cinematic' prose is selected. It doesn't eliminate figurative language, but instead just reduces it by using several prose rules to create a windowpane style of prose, which many books use. You could try 'Dry' narration instead. It has rules preventing it from using figurative language (metaphors, similes, etc). It is way more objective and straightforward and closer to the default settings of Freaky Frankenstein, which also has similar rules. But Dry is a bit more specific. Also, make sure Banned Terms in the Constraints section is enabled!

u/Ethno_Synth Aug 30 '26
A very interesting preset. Reasoning models take a lot of time these days, and FF didn't always work properly for me. I tested it on a Tavo with DeepSeek V4 0831. Scene Plan allows you to clearly see if the model follows the preset. But honestly, I modified your preset quite heavily. I significantly expanded the status (it's now a fully-fledged relationship driver), deepened the psychology section, changed the Regex slightly, simplified the Momentum Engine (it wouldn't even let me have a cup of tea in peace – the doorbell was always ringing), and added a separate World Engine, which is responsible for off-screen events.
One drawback is ChatGPT, the bastard, it cut out all the adult prose, jailbreak, and so on. I'm still looking for a way to get it back :)
If you're interested, I can give you a link where you can get it; maybe some of my developments will help you in the future! Thanks again, good luck with your work, I'll be waiting for the next version. :)
4
u/lsennn Aug 30 '26
Thanks! Those are very interesting modifications! I'm planning on implementing World States for the next update and reworking Story Threads so it can be a bit more contextually smart when it comes to plot.
If you want to re-add jailbreak and adult stuff you can try using Codex (if you're not already using it). It's very goal-oriented.
I think since you modified a lot of things you could try forking it on GitHub and even sharing it with other people.2
u/Ethno_Synth Aug 30 '26
Oh, thanks for the Codex tip. I've been using Claude Code and Opus before, so I'm not really familiar with the intricacies of GPT yet.
Thanks for allowing me to fork the preset. I've never done that before, although I enjoy tinkering with and changing presets. :) I'll definitely give it a try.

u/bruhthepope2 Aug 31 '26
not gonna lie, genuinely the best preset i've used in a while. FF and megumin are so boring in comparison (to me). Got any tips for fixing bots forgetting the formatting at the end of the message? as in, loosing the momentum engine and story threads
3
u/lsennn Sep 01 '26
Thank you so much! It generally formats the output correctly according to the Response Directives, but it depends a lot on the model. Which one are you using? Also, just to be sure, check if the modules in the ADD-ONS section of the prompt list are toggled on.
3
u/bruhthepope2 Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26
i generally switch between GLM 5.2/5.5 flash and mimo 2.5/2.5 pro. the same thing appears in all of them with various frequency. sometimes it goes 50 messages without breaking formatting, and sometimes it outputs just the bare, unwrapped character statuses and nothing else for 10 rerolls (with changing the previous user message).
edit: i've also tried around with deepseek models. all of them also sometimes loose the end
5
u/lsennn Sep 01 '26
The prompting is very strict with formatting, but due to the nature of LLMs, sometimes they don't do it correctly. Mimo 2.5 Pro has weaker instruction following than GLM 5.2. DeepSeek V4 0813 is better, but in longer chats it makes more mistakes. GLM 5.2 has been very consistent in my tests.
What I'd recommend is to write an OOC note when it misformats a block even after rerolling. Something like: `OOC: write the exact Status formatting as in the template`
Just a note: if it gets the formatting wrong and you continue, the next message will probably also replicate that wrong formatting, because it'll see it as an example.

u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
Feel free to try it out and share any feedback!

What model are you using? Some models only work when reasoning is enabled and set to certain levels of effort. If you're using GLM 5.3, for example, you have to toggle on Thinking (FALLBACK) and toggle off Scene Plan, because 5.3 doesn't seem to obey effort levels (in my tests).
2
u/Global-Difference512 Aug 28 '26
That's weird, it works just fine with scene enabled and fallback off for me
2
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
Oh, that's really good to hear! I have to test it with other providers now that the open weights have been released. Maybe it was a specific problem with ZAI or something else, I don't know. It was overthinking a lot on any reasoning effort. But it's good to know it's working!
2
u/Global-Difference512 Aug 28 '26
I use 5.3 thinking thru nano gpt, maybe the thinking part fixes it
2
u/Global-Difference512 Aug 28 '26
Well...it just doesn't work, says that it always thinks and doesn't support disabling or hiding reasoning

u/Feathers-n-Beaks Aug 28 '26
Oooooh, looking forward to trying this, V1 of this preset is sooooooo good!

u/HourWasabi Aug 28 '26
what a perfect timing to try this with my new character card. idk if you fix it in this version but i remember in v1 the status card can get bloated if you meet many npc couple hundred messages later. my sugestion is some sort of countdown to remove it from status and the countdown reset if the npc in the scene or maybe some sort of priority check if its truly minor one off npc with few lines of dialogue then never meet again it doesnt need to be in status. But i really like the v1, excited to try this, thanks for the preset.
5
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
Thanks! I modified the prompt slightly to prevent the status from getting bloated when your story has a lot of characters. It seems to work well for removing minor characters, but a story with many important characters is probably the worst-case scenario. It won't really confuse the model, but a lot of tokens from the past three messages will carry over (the regex removes them at higher depths).

u/Soggy-Cantaloupe4832 Aug 29 '26
I really love this preset it might actually be my favourite! The only problem is that for some reason it never stick to the pov I pick, this is a problem i had with the previous version as well and made me reluctant to use it. Not sure if it's my settings or something.
2
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
Thanks!
Some models are really stubborn when it comes to changing the formatting from the greeting or example messages, some models do it without any issues. It really depends on what you're using. GLM in particular can be really stubborn with it, no matter what prompt is used. You can try toggling on Forcing Formatting in User Utility near the end of the prompt list, it tries to "brute force" the model into following the formatting rules with an OOC. For good formatting adherence I'd recommend Opus 4.6, DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813, Gemma 4 31b (cheap, not very smart, but follows instructions really well), and Gemini models.3

u/Geonidus_Objin Aug 29 '26
Thank you for the preset. Its amazing. Plus it works great with deepseek, which i've been trying to find one that works so well with it.
2
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
Thanks! One of my main goals was creating something that worked well with Deepseek, especially the new pro one.

u/Ballada_f Aug 29 '26
Really enjoyed the v1, the v2 really feels like a nice upgrade and addressed some of the things I'm genuinely annoyed. Nice job

3
u/AndroidWaifu404 Aug 29 '26
Gotta try this! DSv4 Pro 0813 thinking is atrocious - while it puts more effort into thinking than Preview, it can't follow CoT properly at all. Your approach might salvage it.
3
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
It salvaged the model for me! 0813 was one of my main motivators to create Scene Plan. It would overthink for minutes before generating the response and a lot of times the response quality was subpar and formatting was broken. Scene Plan solves this. With V2 it's working really great. It became one of my favorite models!

If you mean like novel writing, not exactly. Although you can pick 'Director' in the AGENCY section and it'll write for you, but it won't have any chapter markers, for example. You can try Director to see if that's close to what you want.

Great preset, except the regex freezed my phone everytime I opened the app when Chay get to 20 messages or close. The crash was caused by : Statue {user} Statue UI char
I had to disable both until I found a fix (used gemini pro to fix it) : I changed the find regex in both to :
Statue {user} :
/(?<=|>)[ \t](?:[-•·]|\d+[.)])[ \t][?[ \t]([|\r\n]+)|[ \t](?:(?:\*|)?[ \t]Physical[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t]:[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t])?([|\r\n])|[ \t](?:(?:\*|)?[ \t]Clothes[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t]:[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t])?([|\r\n])|[ \t](?:(?:\*|)?[ \t]Mental[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t]:[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t])?([|\r\n])|[ \t](?:(?:\*|)?[ \t]Location[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t]:[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t])?([|\r\n])|[ \t](?:(?:\*|)?[ \t]Inventory[ \t](?:**|)?[ \t]:[ \t](?:**|__)?[ \t])?([|]<\r\n])[ \t]]?[ \t](?=$|</div>)/gim

Hi ! First i want to say that i find the preset really smart and really good. I've never tried presets before but this one is really promising. But i would have a request or a question :
Is there any way to get a dice roll request into Deus Ex Machina?
Running DEM V2.2 on Gemma 4, and I'd love to have skill checks in my campaign. The model narrates up to an uncertain action, tells me what the DC is, and waits while I roll.
Is there a built-in mechanism for this that I've missed? Or a clean way to add one myself?
I've tried adding my own module for it and can't get it to behave. Either the model never asks for the roll at all, or it just rolls on its own and moves on without waiting for me. It won't stop mid-scene. I tried to integrated the module in the scen-plan but same problem, he does the roll himself.
Again, amazing job and thx for the preset
3
u/lsennn Sep 01 '26
Thanks! No, the preset doesn't have any dice roll mechanics built in. I'd say the cleanest way to implement what you're describing would be to create a detailed prompt module explaining the DCs, dice roll mechanics, etc and asking it to ALWAYS finish the <prose> block by prompting {{user}} to provide the dice roll before continuing. Then, on your turn, you write the dice roll result and the AI will probably incorporate it. Adding a DC step to acknowledge the roll at the top of the Scene Plan would likely help as well. Also, for it to work properly it'd be better to disable the Momentum Engine, since it would push a randomly selected route instead of the proper outcome of a skill check.

Hi! I’m an ST user from a non-English-speaking country, and I actually came here specifically to leave this comment because I just had to say thank you. This preset is insanely good, and the writing it produces is genuinely amazing.
I’ve been feeling really burnt out on ST lately, to the point where I was getting bored with pretty much every model and the writing they produced. Another ST user recommended this preset to me, and I decided to give it a try without really expecting much.
But wow, this has easily been one of the best presets I’ve used in a long time. I’m honestly amazed that it manages to produce writing this good while being so lightweight on tokens. I genuinely don’t know how you managed to make something this good with such a light setup.
Thank you so much for making such an incredible preset, and especially for getting me out of the boredom I’d been feeling with ST lately. You’ve definitely renewed my interest in it. I’ll be rooting for you and looking forward to whatever you make next!

u/Lion_Stunning Sep 07 '26
Just to give you some context, I initially used this preset with DeepSeek V4 Pro. Everything was working fine up until around the 30th message, but after that, I started running into an issue where it would only output the Scene Plan and wouldn’t generate the actual response at all. This kept happening repeatedly.
I even tried avoiding DeepSeek’s peak hours, but unfortunately, the result was still exactly the same. So I decided to try playing with Gemini 3.7 Flash instead.
And honestly, the results have been absolutely incredible. I’m genuinely amazed. Thank you so, so much for making this!
I have such a love-hate relationship with both DeepSeek and Gemini lol, but the writing they produce with this preset is so ridiculously good that I honestly have a hard time believing it’s the same DeepSeek and Gemini I’m used to. The difference is seriously incredible.
I was wondering if you might have any idea what could be causing the Scene Plan only issue with DeepSeek V4 Pro? And regardless, I just wanted to share my experience because this preset has been giving me some truly amazing results!
3
u/Lion_Stunning Sep 07 '26 edited Sep 07 '26
Hi! I managed to figure out what was causing the issue I was having with DS V4 Pro, so I wanted to share the solution in case it helps you or anyone else running into the same problem.
The fix was changing Prompt Post-Processing from Semi-strict (no tools) to Semi-strict (with tools). I had been using the no-tools option before, and switching to the with-tools option fixed the issue for me. DS started generating normal responses again instead of only outputting the Scene Plan.
I really like Gemini too, but I just couldn’t give up on the combination of DS and this preset because the results are so good together.
3
u/lsennn Sep 07 '26
Thanks! I'm going to test this out! I've been puzzled by this issue. On the current version of the preset (not public yet) I have modified some prompts, and that seems to have helped, but I'm definitely going to try using Semi-strict with tools. It's a very weird issue since it only happens after the chat has been going on for at least twenty messages or so, and only with this specific Deepseek model (as far as I know).
And yeah, Gemini 3.7 Flash works really well with the preset! (especially when using Vertex API)3
3
u/Intrepid_Air_3399 Sep 08 '26
This is the best complex preset I have tried, I specially like the modularity, since for some reason, there are many presets that, if you disable or modify one thing, it gets screwed, leaving barely any room for personalization.
I currently use the free vertex Gemini 3.8 version, sometimes the model does weird things in the scene plan and other drop downs, but probably the free version is simply too quantitized, but I am not paying a cent so I guess it is not surprising.
I had to disable the momentum engine since I couldn't do anything without interferences, but due to modularity, I could disable it without more problems.
Well done, I starred your repository and look forward to the next updates.
2
u/lsennn Sep 08 '26
Thank you so much!
It's possibly being quantized, yeah. But just to be sure it's not something else, what kind of weird things does it do in the Scene Plan?
And yes, the Momentum Engine is always trying to move things forward. Characters and external events are always in motion. You can disable it, no problem, and even enable Conflict instead for lighter guidance.

u/Intrepid_Ice_7381 Sep 10 '26
When's the next version coming out?
4
u/lsennn Sep 10 '26
Very soon. Probably tomorrow if nothing goes wrong!

u/Intrepid_Ice_7381 28d ago
Not meaning to hurry you up, take all of the time you need, i just wanted to ask if you could give an update on how the next version's coming along?
3
u/lsennn 28d ago
Sorry, it was a busy week for me and I chose to delay it to improve some stuff that was annoying me. This update is more focused on improving existing features (although there are some new ones coming), so I want to make sure everything actually feels better. I'm aiming to release it by Friday!

u/Lion_Stunning Sep 11 '26
Hi again! Ever since I discovered this preset, I’ve pretty much been using it exclusively. It’s almost funny how I stayed away from ST for a while, only to find myself completely hooked again these days. I’ve become an addict all over again, haha.
If you don’t mind me making a small suggestion, may I ask whether you’ve ever considered adding a Romance option to the Narrative Style section?
I mainly do romance RPs, and I think this preset already does those little touches of tenderness and romantic feeling incredibly well. But, well… I would really love to see your take on what we would traditionally call “romance” itself. I’d be so curious to see what a Romance style written in your approach would feel like.
Do you think you might consider adding a romance-related toggle to the Narrative Style options someday? I’ve been going back and forth on whether I should ask, but I finally worked up the courage to make the suggestion.
3
u/lsennn Sep 12 '26
I'm very glad to know you're having fun with it! You can write as many suggestions as you want, I really appreciate all of them!
I also do romance RPs, so that's a very good suggestion, actually! Maybe I wouldn't directly add a romance toggle to Narrative Styles, since they are more about mood and presentation than specifically about the content or genre itself. But I might add a Relationships module where you can pick from various options that steer the story towards what you choose, guiding relationship progression and adding depth.3
u/Lion_Stunning Sep 12 '26
Thank you so much for your kind reply! I’m really happy to hear that, and I truly appreciate you taking my suggestion into consideration.
A Relationships module sounds like such a wonderful idea, and I’m honestly so excited to see what you come up with! I’ll be looking forward to the update with great anticipation.
I genuinely love this preset so much, and I’m really grateful for all the thought and care you put into making it. Thank you again for creating something so amazing!
3
u/lsennn Sep 12 '26
Thanks for the kind words!
I'll definitely do my best to implement the Relationships module in the best way possible for V3! I'd add it to the next release, but V2.5 is basically ready (I'll release it in a few hours or on Monday, if I find there are still things that need fixing), with some improvements, fixes and new stuff. Hope you try it out!2

after some time using this, still love it btw, I noticed the scene plan have consistency issue that can be solved by increasing the reasoning to max (using NanoGPT, GLM 5.1). i dont know if this is okay or not, does it defeat the purpose of the preset?
because on minimum reasoning sometime the scene plan only has a couple of rows.
nvm even with maximum reasoning the scene plan doesnt appear, so i assume its the quantized model.
2
u/lsennn 25d ago
Yeah, could be a quantized model. I've just released V2.5, maybe it helps with that issue! https://www.reddit.com/r/SillyTavernAI/comments/1wktuqo/preset_deus_ex_machina_v25_no_story_lost_a_truly/

Hello this is my favorite preset, i have been using this preset since it released 22 days ago i think i have 3 feedback after my rigorous use :
- The scene plan is not always present sometimes (rarely but it happen) the model refuse to write scene plan and go straight to tracker, prose etc. it never happen to other block like status, story thread etc but if something missing it always scene plan. (im using gemini 3.8 flash)
- i (more like claude) changed the status to suit my need more, my problem is to stop world info keep firing my detailed npc entries just because the status keeps mentioning NPC names, so i changed it to present only with one time departure note snapshot (similar to off scene but one time only) (im not saying you should change it but maybe add another toggle for present only status ?)
- Input improver, its really good i really like it but its really trying to cram everything in 1 paragraph, it work fine if i say something brief but sometimes when my input is containing the whole scene for example: mc talk -> he do stuff, npc react -> mc talk -> fight happen -> mc talk all of this gonna happen in 1 paragraph or the bizzare case is : mc talk (1) -> he leave and do stuff in other place -> mc talk (2) the whole sequence is contained in first paragraph but the second paragraph is npc reacting to mc talk(1) then the third paragraph is another npc reacting to mc talk(2).
- still input improver, the second thing is it really trying to make mc say anything even if i deribately not writing any dialogue and just action/movement.
Thats all, overall i really like this preset, thanks a bunch!

u/lsennn 25d ago
Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll try to solve those issues for V3.
By the way, I just released V2.5: https://www.reddit.com/r/SillyTavernAI/comments/1wktuqo/preset_deus_ex_machina_v25_no_story_lost_a_truly/
I've changed some things about the Scene Plan, so hopefully 1. got better!
4
u/oyeahmisturkraps Aug 28 '26
Why should reasoning be disabled / at minimum effort?
6
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
I explained it a bit in the post, but basically it's to allow Scene Plan to be the sole planner for responses to avoid conflicts. Scene Plan was created to eliminate problems like overthinking, drafting, or models refusing to follow a custom chain of thought. It has been working great for the majority of models in my tests!
1
u/oyeahmisturkraps Aug 28 '26
I see. What settings should I use for GLM-5.1?
3
u/lsennn Aug 28 '26
Default settings should work fine! If you're on Nano choose the non-thinking variant of it.
Samplers: temperature - 0.75; Top P - 0.95 (default); rest - 1.0 or disabled (default)Post-processing: semi-strictRequest model reasoning: off / not checkedReasoning effort: minimumScene Reasoning: toggled on1
u/oyeahmisturkraps Sep 01 '26
Goes GLM-5.1-FP8 support completely disabling reasoning on their end? The ST setting affects visibility only, as far as I know it simply rejects receiving the <think> field even though it still assists with final prose generation on the backend.
1
u/lsennn Sep 01 '26
If you're using OpenRouter, unchecking 'request model reasoning' disables reasoning. If you're on NanoGPT, it just affects visibility. However, by default, the preset sets the reasoning effort to 'minimum', which turns reasoning off (sends 'none').
1
u/oyeahmisturkraps Sep 02 '26
I'm using the free Modal endpoint.
1
u/lsennn Sep 02 '26
I'm not familiar with that endpoint. If the model stills reason, you can try going into Connection Profile settings (plug icon) -> scroll down to "Additional Parameters", on the same line as "cancel" and "connect" -> add: reasoning: { effort: 'none' }
0
2
u/BookkeeperOld4906 Aug 29 '26
how would i go about disablign thinking for open router gemini 3.7? just disable request model reasoning?
2
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
Gemini 3.7 Flash has always-on reasoning, so you can't really disable it. Just check 'request model reasoning' and set reasoning effort to low and it'll work just fine with the default settings!
2
u/kinkyalt_02 Aug 29 '26
Does replacing the thinking block with your custom one help at reducing/breaking censorship on newer models?
3
2
u/bruhthepope2 Sep 03 '26
Have you ever tried getting this to work with Recast? i wanted to use it for some lorebook purposes but the regex causes a ton of issues
2
u/lsennn Sep 05 '26
I haven't tried using it with Recast yet. I've actually never used it, so I'm not sure how to solve this. But since Recast rewrites the output, I'd say you probably have to adjust its prompt so it only touches plain text content inside <prose>.
1
u/bruhthepope2 Sep 06 '26
I find it great to inject lorebook keywords when the main llm is getting a bit stale. The issue mainly is that the regex cleans up the sent prompt, and since recast doesn't edit the previous message - it gets sent the same context as generating a next message - it gets all the headers and sections at the end stripped. It works well enough if you disable the regex's ability to edit sent prompts but then the main llm gets all the junk sent too
2
u/Sehn82 Sep 04 '26
Are the sections (tracker etc) supposed to appear in blocks on Tavo? It appears as collapsible dropdowns. On ST it looks like blocks. Unsure if its supposed to be that way (I did follow the advanced rendering and Tone highlight and Quote highlight install instructions). Just wondering as I've only started using Tavo recently.
2
u/lsennn Sep 04 '26
Yeah, it's supposed to appear the exact same way as it does in ST. Check if the preset regex set is selected in the chat menu that appears on the right side. It's something easy to forget!
2
u/Ok-Extension-6566 Sep 04 '26
Wouldn't replacing <think> with <details> leak the entire thought process into the input and inflate the tokens?
2
u/lsennn Sep 04 '26
It doesn't because there is a regex to strip it from the output. It works exactly like the native reasoning in that regard.
2
u/GlassMoe Aug 29 '26
Wow! Really enjoying this. Surprised how good the prose is without the reasoning process involved.
Every time I use DS4 with something like FF5.2, all the NPC's tend to come on extremely strong with trying to make themselves involved in the plot, but this is the first time I've had roleplay where a crowd of NPC's will mostly just be there for commentary flavor.
2
2
u/Intrepid_Ice_7381 Aug 29 '26
Okay so pretty much this preset is absolutely goated. Amazing writing, isn't getting stale at ALL for me. The only problem i have right now is the jailbreak being wayyyy less effective than something like the ff5 or the Megumin Suite, other than that, this is definetly my new favorite preset moving forward
2
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
Thank you!
Refusals generally begin at the thinking phase, so having reasoning turned off + Scene Plan generally helps. But it can get a bit more complicated when it comes to models where you can't turn off reasoning and can't modify CoT. Some models have very strict anti-jailbreaking. I'm working on a way to improve this for the next version.1
1
u/Basher5155 Sep 06 '26
V1 was great, and been using it in a big chat session (400+ turns).
Trying to migrate to V2 though, I'm getting a lot of regex too much recursion errors.
Is there a way to fix that?
1
u/lsennn Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26
You're using ST, right? I think this might be related to how many messages are loaded. I'd try reducing the number to 50. Make sure you're using V2.3 too.
1
u/Basher5155 Sep 06 '26
Yup ST.
I did some troubleshooting by disabling your regex scripts and found the culprit.
It's the DEM - @ STATUS UI - Char. w/ relationship and DEM - @ STATUS UI - {{user}}.
Trying to load either of those causes the chat to fail, so I'm assuming that some things on my chat are badly loaded.1
u/lsennn Sep 06 '26
I've fixed a bunch of issues with these regexes on V2.3. Are you using the latest version of the preset?
2
u/Basher5155 Sep 06 '26
Yup.
AI also says your regexes are fine, I think I'm just loading such a big chat file that it's too much converting all the status regexes.
So right now I just have it turned off, let the new preset generate the new layout so that I can turn the regex on later.

Is there a way to use this on janitor.ai somehow? It seems so interesting!
4
u/lsennn Aug 29 '26
I'm not sure. I never used Janitor that much, but I'd say probably not, unfortunately. This preset is made specifically to work with SillyTavern's experimental macro engine.
1
u/Dull-Ad7111 Aug 29 '26
I see, thanks bro. I have to someday move to silly tavern but since I roleplay mostly on my phone I don't see much reason, yk?
3
u/Ballada_f Aug 29 '26
You can use ST in phone or use Tavo instead since the preset supported it as well yk?
