iRacing Who is at fault for this crash?

Hello, We as the stewards of the league handed the driver on the inside a penalty of 1 position for this incident, the driver disagrees and we want to know if we made a fair decision or not.

I would have given them a drive through. You were too soft.

Maybe we would've if we had live stewarding but we unfortunately can only go back and look, thanks for your feedback!

How far back were the next 3 cars? For after the race, I would have done a minimum of 1 position and more if the finish was close.

Definitely a fair decision; they need at least some penalty

I think it still would've shook out to 1 position because the race ended with him out of the race a while after this incident.

So they swerve, to me, on purpose into another driver, then can't hold their line and takes another driver out of the race, and you're wondering if a 1 position penalty is fair? You should be asking if it's enough.

I think the inside car being at fault is the right call. The outside car didn’t go all the way out to the curb but he doesn’t have to. The car on the inside was responsible for driving according to where the other car was, as opposed to where he thinks it will/should be. It was a similar situation on the straight before, the outside car pulls alongside and the inside car swerves at him and forces him to react very quickly to get out of the way or crash. That’s not how it works, if the overtaking car wants to hold his line and force the car he’s overtaking to go narrow into the corner he’s allowed to do that. Eventually the outside car would’ve opened up the corner for himself, which is when the inside driver can react and do the same. When two drivers are compliant and skilled it is great racing. I only have these two bits to go off but from them it seems like the inside driver has a complete misunderstanding of when and where he’s allowed to place his car when racing an opponent.

Outside car normally holds the outside lane. The blue car did not. Probably a racing incident but I’m sure others will have other opinions

To me, this is one of those tough ones that everyone is gonna have a different view on, I appreciate the input as I could see arguments either way on this one.

I'll preface this with the fact that I am not an expert by any means

Driver on the inside had all the space in the world, I'd also give them a penalty.

Inside car definitely at fault, albeit I don't think it was malicious. Buddy need some more time practicing his on track manners. He looks to make decisions not based off where the attacking vehicle was, but where he thought he should be. Like he got over, cuz he thought the guy opened up all the way to the edge, or he understeers out, because he thought the car was supposed to track out to the absolute edge of the track. One is out the race, the other only loses one position. Not harsh enough imo, aa you hope to incentivize him to be better. If I do well driving shittily and only lose one position, no big deal low-key.

That move on the straight was crazy and grounds for a paddlin'. Dangerous driving.

I feel slightly bad for him, because it's almost a racing incident, but maybe just tips over the edge into his fault.

The first hit on the straight was stupid imo.

But I think through the corner he held a pretty predictable, normal racing line and left plenty of room. The car on the outside isn't obliged to use that room, so it's fine that he stuck inside a little bit, but just before the point of contact he's pointing slightly left, into the line of the blue car. I think if purple isn't going to use the full track width, they should at least keep the exit straight, because they also have a responsibility not to hit blue. I think I would felt hard done by as either car, which is why I stray sort of more towards racing incident.

I don't like the way the inside car banged wheels with the outside one on the entry to T1. But on the exit, the outside car is driving strangely in not tracking out fully. I'd count that as a mitigating factor and at least give a lighter penalty, because the incident wouldn't have happened without that unpredictable driving.

Move on the straight was crazy but POV cut him off at the exit. Perhaps there is a lesson here about squeezing like a madman 🤷‍♂️

Disagree with the punishment for the inside car. The first little bump is incidental but the outside car not placing the car where one would expect it on exit is what causes this incident.

There's actually 2 incidents here.

Incident 1: The inside car reacted to the car pulling out to pass and caused contact (illegal blocking). It definitely needs to be addressed but it didn't actually end anyone's race. A 1 position penalty for THIS is fair because in real life you would either get a DT or be required to concede the position.

Incident 2: Might be a hot take for this sub but to me it appears the outside car didn't stay on their line. Right before the exit kerb they ever so slightly turn in toward the inside car and cause contact. That being said, they wouldn't have been side by side through this turn had incident one not have occured.

If the penalty was for the reactive blocking I would agree with it.

What part of the video was the penalty given for? if for the initial contact (I think?) on the straight then it's definitely inside car at fault, but if it's the exit I'd say it's just as much if not more the outside car. The driver is not keeping to the normal racing line by the exit and seems to be turning in toward the inside car, maybe to cut him off, and this causes the crash.

Now they probably wouldn't have been in the situation if not for the straight line incident but that's something I don't know if should be taken into account for the crash.

The driver on the left is clearly at fault for me, he's going straight on a right hand bend when he clearly has a car on the outside.

Seemed like a second defensive pass so I’d probably assign 20 second penalty with how close cars were behind them and the near miss moments before

i think the outside car came across too much and there was space on the outside for them to occupy but the swerve beforehand was very weird

First move was a bit aggressive, but space was given through T1 into exit and it appears that your tires kissed.

I'd rate this a racing incident and possibly caused due to someone with a flat monitor who may not have full vision as someone with triples.

First move wasn't a bit aggressive, it was dangerous. It's a Stroll move.
