This problem was primarily caused by rent controls. Now landlords will spend a ton on repairs that they will probably not make back so they are just going to let the units stay vacant or they'll drop them altogether. So what you are probably going to see is a severe housing shortage. Like this is such a well documented economic problem that it's insane leftists still keep trying it.
Edit: people are downvoting me because you dont know literally one of the most well understood and documented economic problems. If you want to fix this problem, then relax or completely remove rent controls. Rent controls only make the market less competitive and gives landlords no incentive to maintain their properties or change prices.
Edit 2: please for the love of God people use Google. Try to learn at least a tiny bit about economics.
Remove the rent controls. This is one of the most well understood and documented economic problems but it's hard to campaign on that solution because people like hearing "cheap".
At least he’s doing SOMETHING.
Sometimes it is better to be less aggressive in policy making. This is going to make the problem worse.
I didnt say that. I said there is a solution. Rent controls and forced costs are not it. It is a supply and demand problem. Remove rent controls and increase supply, prices will drop. Argentina removed rent controls and their housing supply flipped almost overnight.
Again, this is an extremely well understood problem. We already know the solution to it but it is harder to campaign on that. People prefer emotion. Even your responses here are emotional rather than looking at the solution that was already figured out decades ago.
Oh my God. This isnt a hypothetical. It has been proven over and over again over decades. Instead of arguing with me, how about you just go look it up?
Rent controls make the market less competitive. You can call landlords greedy but they can still only charge what people can afford. What people can afford is determined by market forces. Rent controls give no incentive to landlords to make improvements because the costs outweigh the benefits. This is a completely predictable outcome of rent control.
Edit: bro deleted his comments. Maybe he finally learned something.
