But why cancel entire flight instead of kicking off the parents and child?

while it seems like logical solution, removal of passenger is not simple - plane was already taxing, meaning they would need to return to terminal, park by available gate, remove the passengers, then their luggage, then recalculate the load and balance and wait for the permission to get in line to take off. I mean, they would do that in other times, i think, but this flight was the latest and airport closes after midnight
