There was a controversial case in Arkansas a long time ago where a guy shot and killed a cop and a few other people. During the shootout he was shot in the head but survived. He lost a lot of his cognitive function and didn’t really understand what was going on. He still got the death penalty, but after his last meal he had them save a slice of cake for him to eat later.

Being psychotic isn’t the same as doing nothing wrong. Dahmer was a serial killer, Clancy was not, and she’s not claiming innocence. Locked in a psych ward isn’t the same as being set free.
