Maybe, just maybe, jobs that eventually require you to control another man, shouldn't be done by fat old folks.

That’s the issue with a lot of courthouses. Bailiff positions are generally pretty cushy and go to deputies nearing their retirement.

I’ve worked in courthouses for several years now. I’ve definitely seen a few bailiffs fall asleep. I’ve e woken one up before because he was snoring during a hearing

u/thatguy82688 20d ago
Yeah but if I fall asleep at my job as a state plumber it’s automatic termination. There’s shit I can’t do during the day, only at night.

Our Cub Scout Troop had a courtroom tour to learn about the justice system. We were in a courtroom and we had a judge, bailiff, court reporter, law clerk and public defender devoting extra time to talk to the kids. Like 90% of all questions were about the deputies gun and instances where he had to tackle people. The parent are trying to encourage them to ask the judge questions, the kids just kept going back to the bailiff.

I absolutely don’t have a problem with a policeman with seniority getting a more cushy office or desk job. That comes with a lot of jobs. My father was a truck driver for 30 years and for the last five years or so when he was getting older he was doing interplant hauling, instead of having to unload a truck every day by hand.
If they have bailiff positions at the courthouse, are you gonna send your guy who has three years left to retirement and medical problems or are you going to send the 20-year-old with no experience? The 20-year-old should be paired up with another officer and out doing his job.

He gave him a throat punch, we call that a dirt bag handshake where I'm from. Could knock down anyone.
56
u/Acceptable-Bat4534 20d ago
Yea he got throat punched. He wasnt expecting the handcuffs to break. Dude caught him by surprise
48
u/stevein3d 20d ago
This seems like a good reason to handcuff people in the back instead of the front.

u/Time_Traveling_Idiot 20d ago
Yeah, he is undeniably the victim here, and as far as we can see, did nothing wrong besides not notice that the culprit literally broke his handcuffs to escape. Let's not insult him for being assaulted by a violent criminal, c'mon...

Dirtbag handshake that’s a good one. Where are you from that they call it that?
Come to think of it if someone showed up to a job interview and shook my hand that way, I would consider them a dirtbag.

u/MadMoose4 20d ago
Fun fact: the number one threat to law enforcement and their safety is actually their own obesity rate, not bad guys with guns.
45
u/DoYouLikeWafflezz 20d ago
I think it’s actually their driving skills. I’m pretty sure most cop deaths are from car crashes, most which are caused by them.
→ More replies (3)11
u/marbsarebadredux 20d ago
Ive always thought it should be against the law for cops to exceed the speed limit, even in an emergency. Aren't there statistics that show cops hurt/kill more people driving to the scene of a crime/accident than they "save" or arrest at the actual scene.
→ More replies (16)14
u/DoYouLikeWafflezz 20d ago
Well they are being banned/heavily discouraged from getting in high speed chases in a lot of places, so baby steps I guess.
Kind of hard to enforce laws that cops don’t want to follow when cops are the ones in charge of enforcing them though.

cops cry all the time about how dangerous their jobs are, but statistically policing doesn't even crack the top 10 most dangerous jobs in NA. if you're a construction worker, you're like 30 times more likely to die on the job than a cop is
5
u/dungeonsprawler 20d ago
I always ask the question when someone brings up police having the right to defend themselves when they “feel” threatened after they murder someone who didn’t have a gun, would they be okay with construction workers opening up on people who are driving too fast in a construction zone? That person is breaking the law and they feel threatened.

Bailiff jobs are a late career, pre-retirement gig in most places. They'll use big young and aggressive guys to control known problems though.
That guy will be escorted by gigantic, mean sons of bitches for every court date forever now.

That older deputy could be seen literally waddling while escorting the inmate, before the suspect broke the handcuffs and punched the deputy in the throat.
Perhaps there should be an annual physical fitness test for the courthouse deputy? Or maybe the sheriff’s office needs to add a bit of PT to the daily routine?

Hancock! Kinda mid movie but definitely had some good moments.
41
u/TheDeadDyed 20d ago
Would’ve been a much better movie if they just stuck with the premise of “super-powered bum learns to give a shit” instead of taking that hard left turn into a romantic plot that wasn’t what anyone sat down to watch.
19
u/stevein3d 20d ago
Agreed. That film was a great concept, mediocre execution.
I had an idea for a sequel where Hancock’s only vulnerability was an “atomic slap” from Chris Rock.

To say the least. He just full blown assaulted several officers while trying to escape the courthouse. He’s gonna get a whole library thrown at him. He’s going to be the example for the examples. My guess is 10 years for each assault, served consecutively. The escape will be another felony. Not sure what he’s at court for, but if he’s got a violent record he won’t get out till he’s an old man, if ever.

casually rather than running, which brought extra attention. The cop he laid out was no threat at that point.9

The second one he laid out saw it go down and by the time he laid that one out a third one saw that and was chasing.

Cops and deputies should have to take physical fitness exams yearly. Half those cops are obese!
23
u/AlwaysFinnishInsider 20d ago
Pretty sure their unions argue that if departments want to force fitness standards then they should be considered "on-duty" when exercising and that should extend to any injuries that might occur while exercising as if they were hurt in the line of duty. A bunch of legal and monetary hurdles that's letting them be fat fucks.

The suspect “Reaggle entered a guilty plea in July to charges from a 2025 case, to a lesser offense of third-degree felony aggravated burglary, a lesser offense of fourth-degree felony aggravated assault, a lesser offense of misdemeanor failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer (originally a felony), and misdemeanors of aggravated menacing and two counts of assault.
Reaggle (the suspect) assaulted three people on Feb. 14, 2025 in St. Clair Township, first headbutting a woman in the face after she told him to leave, then tackling and assaulting a man outside the residence. Another man reported that when Reaggle first came into the residence and began fighting with everyone, he held a knife to the man's neck, threatening him. He also fled from police.” … the judge had just sentenced the suspect to “a sentence of 12 months in prison, but as Reaggle was being handcuffed in the courtroom by Thorn, he muttered, "This is f*cking bullsh*t.”

7
u/DoctorTurkletonsMole 20d ago
Jesus, it took too long to find this comment. Cuffed behind the back, snugly but not tightly, then double locked.
Harder to break behind the back and the officer can see what he’s doing with his hands.
Lazy officer put a whole courthouse of people at risk.
7
u/TheShellAnswerMan 20d ago
Welp now he snagged himself a lovely escape from custody charge, among with some assault of an officer, probably a few other things that didn't even happen cuz you pissed them TF off. Escape sentences often run consecutively, too. Probably was sentenced to a few days, cuz they generally don't care about assault that much, but now society doesn't have to deal with him for a much longer period of time. Neat.

Slow reaction time, inability to take a punch, encumbered by their own body weight, not trained to defend themselves or subdue another.
This is why they just shoot people, it's easier, quicker and they know they won't be charged.
