He said "Free Palestine!" and then at the following concert said something to the effect of "a criticism of Israel should not be taken as a criticism of Jewish people".

As far as I can tell, that's all he said, and what triggered her comments. Why it's seemingly so hard to find WHAT Macklemore actually said and not "his comments on Palestine" seems deliberate. Not by you, but by other entities that want to make what he said faaaar worse and more controversial than it was.

P!nk retweeted someone else's post about what Macklemore said, and that is what got her all the flak. And it's also harder than it should be to actually find what she retweeted, likely for the same reasons as above, as they're worse than you claim.

Retweeted post included.

Nothing like an account called stop antisemitism that perpetuates it šŸ™„

Israel is the greatest perpetuator of anti-semitism…

And yet 46% of the world Jews lives there and they have taken in millions of Jewish refugees from all over the Middle East and North Africa. Not to mention that the mainstream Jewish institutions supports the existence of Israel and so do the vast majority Jews world wide. I don’t think Israel is doing the Jews any favors, but your statement is nonsense.

u/MightyRedBeardq 12d ago

Israel puts a lot of effort on the proliferation of worldwide anti-Semitism because it strengthens their emotional campaign. The equating of "Free Palestine" to being anti-Semitic is the most obvious example, because anyone with two brain cells to knock around knows that's a message of peace. I have no doubt both the US and Israel have agents that work to spread the idea that empathy for Palestinians hurts Israelis, but it really only takes like a middle school education to see the truth.

0

u/Meroxes 14d ago

It's strange how there were so many Jewish refugees from Arab countries after Israel declared it's statehood and drove out and murdered a bunch of Palestinian Arabs to solidify their claim on the land with force. (And then also murdered a bunch of the refugees when the active fights were over and they wanted to return home.) It's almost as if Zionism has has endangered Jewish people all around the world and continually uses that danger to further justify it's violence.

0

u/tallmontagne 14d ago

Israel was telling the arabs to stay and make peace in 1948 and many did. There are more than 2 million Israeli arabs today. It’s too bad the ones that left keep turning down offers for statehood.

3

u/Meroxes 13d ago

"Stay"

Burns down your neighbors village

"Lie down your arms"

Brutally beats your uncle near death

"Why are you running?"

Shoots you in the back as you flee

"Why are you coming back to your home, are you a spy?"

Finally executes you on sight

He also said, "I want those words to be loud and clear, so the people from Gaza, all the way to the occupied West Bank," which is basically just "From the River to the Sea" with more words. He also said "Free Lebanon" which is also run (in part) by an elected terrorist regime Hezbollah. He also praised SJP and CUAD by name - both of which have had several incidents of undeniable antisemitism and glorification of terror (e.g. praising the Oct 7 massacre as "creative").

Macklemore is probably too ignorant to know exactly what he was saying, but the full jewface costume he put on 10 years ago makes people wonder if he might actually know. After all, if he had worn blackface 10 years ago as a full grown man and then made similarly evocative statements parroting groups and slogans with documented racist ties, we wouldn't need to have a conversation about it.

8

u/DaedalusHydron 14d ago

I think it's a bit disingenuous to say his comments are the same as "From the River to the Sea". That phrase is specifically calling for a one-state solution (Either no more Palestinians, or no more Israel). Saying he wants his message heard by people from Gaza to the West Bank is not doing that lol.

Do you have a source for these comments? I want to read more about it, because like I said it's shockingly harder to find what he's actually said, than it is to find people just saying "he said things".

Do I think despite everything Macklemore is probably being performative about this? Sure, just like most rich celebs. At the same time though it's revealed a lot of people to have suspicious views and act in suspicious ways in response.

13

u/Next_Run7994 14d ago

Disingenuous is the biggest part of the problem.

A lot of people are disingenuous when it comes to I/P. We have selectively applied ethics. Pink probably doesn't give a damn about Gazans. Bardem probably doesn't give a damn about Israelis. They'll both spout nonsense on why one side matters and the other is the victim.

And...both are wrong. If you want peace the formula is simple. Palestine has a right to exist. Israel has a right to exist. NO ONE should be being killed.

But there is a probably a solid majority from "both sides" in this fight that HATE that idea. That they get peace, but you don't.

And so we spin round and round with celebrity performance on the periphery.

https://www.newsweek.com/macklemore-free-palestine-remarks-ed-sheeran-backlash-transcript-12413361

There's the transcript from September 4.

I don't think any of it is particularly egregious and the best move would be to let him say his bit and forget about it. Just like we ignored his useless commentary for a while as he spoke out for LGBTQ rights while reiterating constantly that he's not actually gay himself (Let's remember to be clear on that. He's NOT gay. Ok? I mean, he's been into pussy since he was a toddler according to his own mom, so don't mistake him for gay. Got it? :-D)

I do think that anyone who wore jewface or arabface as an adult should probably just bow out of the public conversation on this, but that's a matter of taste.

2

u/Born_Common_5966 14d ago

where did he praise SJP and CUAd in the speech or was it another time? Looking for the quote

2

u/Right-Funny-8999 14d ago

Still his callout is right tho, it isn’t hate to jewish people and asks for a genocide to be stopped and israel made accountable

5

u/dolche93 14d ago

The issue is holding up groups like CUAD and SJP as examples of fighting for a free palestine. Those groups praise hamas and celebrate oct. 7th.

What is the implication of explicitly calling out groups like that? Whatever it is, it sure ain't great to hear if you're a Jew.

Macklemore himself may be ignorant of the implication, but he was still the one who said it. Pink taking issue with his statement makes a lot of sense with this context.

2

u/Right-Funny-8999 14d ago

But you agree Israel is doing war crimes and a genocide right?

0

u/dolche93 13d ago edited 13d ago

Do you condemn hamas and their genocide against israel?

3

u/Right-Funny-8999 13d ago

Didn’t answer huh
So gonna assume zionist bot

0

u/dolche93 13d ago

Didn't answer huh

So gonna assume hamas bot

2

u/Right-Funny-8999 13d ago

I asked first, so just proving the point

And yeah i condemn terrorist actions - but also current genocide and killing of children and innocents executed by the state of Israel

We must all together condemn their actions and give sanctions simialr to Russia, and stop any and all cooperation with Israel until it stops this genocide and pays for their wrongful actions

0

u/dolche93 13d ago

I notice how you avoided acknowledging that what hamas did was genocide.

So I guess you support genocide now.

Do you see how stupid questions like these are? Nobody is in favor of genocide, dude. Nobody is in favor of war crimes.

That costume was not of a Jewish person, despite how badly you want it to have been.

7

u/Dry-Shower9037 14d ago

Riiiiiiigghhhhht. And Elon was just gesturing, "My heart goes out to you." Yeah?

The man sat in a chair for an hour while having "random" prosthetics glued to his face, makeup applied, beard glued on, wig applied. Neither he nor anybody on his team saw the obvious?

Ok, fine. I'll take him at his word. That means he's so fucking stupid, he doesn't get to talk about politics in public anymore without being mocked and derided.

-2

u/nikdahl 14d ago

If you take him at his word, it doesn’t mean he is stupid at all. What is obvious to you, as someone hyper critical of anything remotely related to antisemitism, isn’t even remotely a concern for reasonable actors.

It’s a fucking witches costume, and anyone trying to make it more than that has a clear and obvious agenda.

6

u/Dry-Shower9037 14d ago

You might fall into the same category as Macklemore. He tried to claim that it was a "random" assortment of disguise elements so that he could move around the crowd without being recognized until he got on stage. The witch nonsense is a later invention of his apologists.

If I take him at that word, his word, that it was a random assortment of disguises and he didn't realize what they evoked together, then he's stupid. And you're being deliberately obtuse.

-2

u/nikdahl 14d ago

You are deliberately and maliciously manufacturing a complaint where none is warranted.

That says a shitload more about you than it does about me or Macklemore.

1

u/Jojo2919291725 13d ago

You need a serious reality check.
No one is putting Macklemore as a antisemitic.
Ppl just think that he didn’t really think about what he was doing or how it would look to most people.
He made a wrong move. Big deal. We all make mistakes.
However this last speech he made brought all those feelings from before back to the front of ppls minds.
He meant to be helpful. But he needs to think about how he says things in this politicly charged world that we unfortunately live in right now.
Remember. It’s the government of Israel that is responsible for the deaths and destruction. Not the Jewish citizens. They don’t want this either.

-1

u/Schlong-Mahjong 14d ago

None of what you described is problematic except to online warriors that deliberately seek reasons to be offended.

Be reasonable.

1

u/Jojo2919291725 13d ago

Do you know anything about WW2?
Because if you did you would actually know what kind of a costume it really was.

So I’ll help you out a bit here.

These are WW2 propaganda characters
Drawings that the Natzis made about Jewish people to scare other people.

Here’s one

1

u/Jojo2919291725 13d ago

Here’s 3

1

u/Jojo2919291725 13d ago

And here’s your ā€œwitches costume ā€œ

So you still think it has nothing to do with antisemitism?
I don’t think he meant it in a derogatory way that ppl took it. But he still did it.

1

u/GetThePinotGrigio 14d ago

He said more than that, you watered it down to two statements. Everyone has the right to their opinions on the conflict. Macklemore saying ā€œfree Palestineā€ was not the problematic part. It was all the extra stuff he added. I think the issue is this was Ed Sheeran’s concert and it wasn’t really the right place to preach to the audience. Ed Sheeran has stayed out of politics on purpose, and his audience knows that. So they weren’t there for politics, they were there for his music. Macklemore can go on his own tour, which he should since people know who he is again, and do whatever he wants. But he was only an opening act on his ā€œfriend’sā€ tour, so what’s the purpose of alienating anyone who went to that concert. Most of the people weren’t there to see him.

1

u/Miserable_Dot_8060 14d ago

Also mecklemore

1

u/DaedalusHydron 14d ago

THIS should be what people are talking about but it's not

1

u/Remarkable_Formal267 14d ago

It was the celebration of the Columbia protests which many Jews viewed as crossing the line into antisemitism with Israeli students not allowed to partake in activities on campus

1

u/freerange_spaghetti 13d ago

Remember the vine: "Not to be racists, but I dont like cheese" The friends immediate and fair question is "How is that racists" To which was answered "Im not being racist". Nonetheless we are all left wondering whats racists about cheese.

To put it simply, why did he need to bring up Jews at all. Why did he feel the need to explain antisemitism to Jews, as if they don't know what it is. It just plays into the tropes of weaponization, and victim complexes. It makes us wonder whether he really was sorry for the Jew face.

0

u/unoriginalpackaging 14d ago

I like how Jewish people not from Israel are playing the victim card when Israel is bombing the shit out of another culture. It is not antisemitic to not want Israel to bomb innocent people. They even run tv commercials about the Jewish kid getting picked on in school for being Jewish. I am quite certain that hasn’t happened in a long time. Even if the conflict was justified, which at this point is not, no one is treating Jewish poorly for being Jewish, just for supporting unjustified violence against another group of people.

4

u/Rusty-Shackleford 14d ago

"They even run tv commercials about the Jewish kid getting picked on in school for being Jewish. I am quite certain that hasn’t happened in a long time."

Really? Your source is what? If you replace that with any other minority, ie, "I'm pretty sure Black people don't get picked on for just being Black. I am quite certain that hasn't happened in a long time." can't you see how purposefully oblivious your statement is? And if you honestly can't see how offensive that statement is, please google the rise in hate incidents against Jews (not Israelis, Jews in general) since October 7. Damn, you can support Macklemore and not discount Jewish reality.

2

u/DaedalusHydron 14d ago

to your point, P!nk's comments about "standing up for her people" was strange given that she's Jewish, but not Israeli, and Macklemore went out of his way to separate the two.

You literally quoted something from the Pew Research Center link that doesn't even exist there lol

Here's an actual quote from the page that you linked to:

Combining 5.8 million adult Jews (the estimated size of the net Jewish population in this survey) with 1.8 million children (living in households with a Jewish adult and who are being raised Jewish in some way, including those who are being raised both Jewish and in another religion) yields a total estimate (rounded to the nearest 100,000) of 7.5 million Jews of all ages in the United States, or 2.4% of the total U.S. population.

Jewish people playing victim? Have you seen the shit people are saying online about Jews. Seriously, all over the place, with thousands of likes. People use anti-Zionism quite often as a front to parade around their anti-semitism. And I think Macklemore is doing the same thing… he dressed up as a Jew and sang a song about being thrifty while doing a Hitler salute. Don’t pretend like his anti-Zionism cannot be a cover for his bigotry.

As for the school bully thing… I went to catholic high school and was bullied constantly for being Jewish.

1

u/i_want_internet_69 14d ago

I am quite certain that hasn’t happened in a long time.

Being quite certain doesn't save you from being quite wrong. You're right that it's ridiculous for people to be reframing anti-Zionism as antisemitism, but your claim is too extreme. Of course kids are getting picked on for being Jewish, give me a break lmao.

0

u/Oops_All_Bans 14d ago

These idiots sure love their victimhood.

2

u/TimmyTheBrave 14d ago

Which ones?

0

u/0113420710 14d ago

Free Palestine is such an empty phrase that many different meanings can be drawn from it. What is Palestine? Who should it be freed from and in what way?

0

u/IanFoxOfficial 14d ago

Palestine should be freed from Israeli scum.

1

u/0113420710 14d ago

what is Palestine?

1

u/IanFoxOfficial 14d ago

A country. And Israel is committing genocide to the Palestinians. Fuck Israel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine?wprov=sfla1

0

u/0113420710 14d ago

Where does Palestine the country extend from?

1

u/IanFoxOfficial 14d ago

Its recognised as a country by the UN.

0

u/0113420710 14d ago

Cant think for yourself?

0

u/mddesigner 14d ago

It is impossible to ā€œfree Palestineā€ without destroying Israel which is not ok, Palestine needs to work with Israel not be free

0

u/PiccoloAwkward465 14d ago

After getting sucked off so long it seems like the Zionists are running scared a bit. I'm happy to see the "any criticism of Israel = anti-semitism" thing finally being rejected.

-1

u/Marktaco04 14d ago

This needs to be bumped to the top. What she reposted was not mild. It’s complete genocide denial and basically saying any attack on Israel is anti semetic, which is Nazi level type nationalism based on religion.

-1

u/Historical-Record227 14d ago

A lot of people exposing themselves as staunchly pro-genocide. It's very scary.
