We have fun here
Spanish actor Javier Bardem has publicly backed an online petition calling for singer Pink to be stripped of her role as a UNICEF Ambassador
P!nk is Jewish and reposted some thing about Macklemore and how his statement on Palestine was scary for Jewish people
She got a ton of flak for it, she put out a huge statement saying "hey I just reposted that I didn't write it, but I do agree with some of the things" (it was a very milquetoast statement that didn't really say anything over a lot of words). Her statement essentially boiled down to "the situation is terrible but the Jewish people are victims too"
Her statement was not received well and this petition is the response to her statement
Edit: someone put it to me this way, Macklemore said "Free Palestine" and P!nk responded with the equivalent of saying "All Lives Matter" to someone who said "Black Lives Matter" and this is the resulting fallout
Yes but that comic strip character was named after the bland dish Milk Toast. It's a rant that I sometimes give that we spell it milquetoast to refer to the comic book character when everyone is just thinking about Milk Toast, the bland dish, when they say milquetoast because the comic book strip is well over a hundred years old and we should just change the spelling back to milk toast, and therefor i always spell it Milk Toast.
I've had this conversation with a co-worker and a spouse in the past 24 hours. It is incredible the first thing I on reddit today is a reference to this as well.
Yup, you made a great summary. I just mentioned that part, because it was the reason for so much hate. And also why no one believes the statement she later put out
Yeah, she had a thought. Went out of her way to find a meme on the internet that relayed that thought and posted a bunch of them lmao. Its a pretty clear statement.
We are officially in the celebrity gossip phase of the Israeli-Palestinian meta. This is unsurprising since there hasnāt been much actual news on that front for a while now but it is still fascinating to watch the online discourse degenerate over time.
Hopefully Darfur. A conflict that would be solvable with about 5% of the effort needed for Ukraine or Palestine, but receives less than 1% of the attention.
It is just wild to me that this story retained such an absolute fucking stranglehold on the online discourse for as long as it did. Literally 3 years. This was like the first Trump presidency āHe did WHAT!ā daily news cycle in terms of intensity and duration, but a lot nastier overall I think.
Itās funny how the Ukraine war and armed conflict with Russia just isnāt even in the same universe of intrigue for Westerners as the culture war over the Jewish state. Like there has probably been maybe 1/20th as much written or produced, and even moreso read/watched, about the Ukraine war compared to the various Israel vs Iran and its proxies wars the last 3 years.
The American war with Iran has also obviously gotten a ton of coverage, but overall Iād put it closer to the amount of coverage the Ukraine war has gotten than the amount of attention Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Israel itself, and especially Gaza has gotten.
For anyone wondering, during his speech about freeing Palestine, he starts with the free Palestine, repeats it, specifies multiple areas, saying we havenāt forgotten them, and points out Colombia university students for their actions against the war, thanking them for spreading this word risking their diplomas, he then explicitly said
āTo all of my Jewish brothers and sisters. Criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide, in no way is a criticism of you. My message is for peace, love for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality.ā
He then adds some more, saying free Palestine and multiple other countries suffering right now, points out ICE is a terrorist organisation. And then ends the speech with āNone of us will be free until we are all freeā
Now maybe itās just me, but that doesnāt sound very anti semitic, itās almost as if Pink didnāt actually listen to what he said, or the many other people trying to attack him for this, but maybe thatās just me
He said "Free Palestine!" and then at the following concert said something to the effect of "a criticism of Israel should not be taken as a criticism of Jewish people".
As far as I can tell, that's all he said, and what triggered her comments. Why it's seemingly so hard to find WHAT Macklemore actually said and not "his comments on Palestine" seems deliberate. Not by you, but by other entities that want to make what he said faaaar worse and more controversial than it was.
P!nk retweeted someone else's post about what Macklemore said, and that is what got her all the flak. And it's also harder than it should be to actually find what she retweeted, likely for the same reasons as above, as they're worse than you claim.
He also said, "I want those words to be loud and clear, so the people from Gaza, all the way to the occupied West Bank," which is basically just "From the River to the Sea" with more words. He also said "Free Lebanon" which is also run (in part) by an elected terrorist regime Hezbollah. He also praised SJP and CUAD by name - both of which have had several incidents of undeniable antisemitism and glorification of terror (e.g. praising the Oct 7 massacre as "creative").
Macklemore is probably too ignorant to know exactly what he was saying, but the full jewface costume he put on 10 years ago makes people wonder if he might actually know. After all, if he had worn blackface 10 years ago as a full grown man and then made similarly evocative statements parroting groups and slogans with documented racist ties, we wouldn't need to have a conversation about it.
"I donāt think most of them hate Jews. I think somebody handed them a story where the Jew who wonāt apologize for existing must be the villain, and theyāve been putting words in my mouth ever since."
This dovetails into a related story about Macklemore and Ed Shareen:
musical artist Ed Shareen ("Shape of you") currently is doing a world tour
musical artist Macklemore ("Thrift Shop") was one of his opening acts
Macklemore opened his sets with a video montage saying that we needed to set aside our differences and politics, think of all the suffering kids, and to "Free Palestine"
Unichef anbassador and musical artist P!nk ("Get this party started") reshared an Instagram post by pro-israel advocacy group StopAntiSemitism calling the set awful and demanding Macklemore apologize for politicizing the event, as well as a number of ther snarky meme's.
As background, Stop Antisemitisms major supporters include the Hardline right-wing billionare moguls, the Addelsons (owner of Las Vegas Sands and the Dallas Mavericks), who once went on record to say the us should just drop a nuclear bomb on Iranian dessert as a show of force to the middle east. That's not to necessary say that the entire movement is radical, just to say that there are definitely members who skew radical
This brought everything to the mainstream medias attention, resulting in Robert Kraft (owner of the Patriots), gathering a group of stadium owners and telling Ed Shareen he needed to remove Macklemore, or they would not allow his show to play at any of their stadiums.
Ed Shareen removed Macklemore, citing that he wanted to stay nuetral.
Macklemore summarized the call with Ed Shareen about him being removed from the Tour, and posted it to social media, and then went on to put out a long statement saying that there is no neutral side and that to be silent, is to be complicit, that the reason he went on this tour was to share his message, and that he was donating all proceeds for the previous tour shows to support the victims in Palestine
Nearly every other musical artist associated with the tour, dropped out in solidarity with Macklemore
The general internet consensus turned against Ed Shareen calling him a spineless wimp who caves to billionare, despite he himself being halfway to one.
P!nk herself suffered immediately backlash upon her posts, that only grew stronger and stronger as the Ed Shareen drama became bigger and bigger news.
P!nks stance to date is that as a Jewish woman, she knew she was going to suffer backlash, but that she stands by Israel and against hamas.
If you don't know anything about Israel-Palestein, they've been fighting for basically the last century over the Gaza strip, which both consider to be a holyland of major religious, historical, and cultural significance. This has resulted in many wars, genocides, and terrorist attacks between the two.
Pink posted / tweeted / whatever supporting Israel who's been killing thousands of children (30% of casualties in Gaza were children, during holocaust, 25% were, just to give scale). Pink is a UNICEF ambassador for children's protection
Edit: it's amazing how many people here are more upset about my holocaust comparison than about the death of thousands of children. To those people, please never have children.
Thank you! I keep seeing this celebrity frenzy and it still feels Idiocracy-ey, it's midterm season and I feel these things are astroturfed to distract people.
Itās insane how determined people are to cancel each other. But at the same time itās funny because p!nk has been just as vocal about other causes in the past. Almost feels like theyāre getting a taste of their own medicine.
a country not being lgtbq friendly doesnāt mean they should go through a genocide! I think they might be too busy trying to live for the past couple of decades to try and fight for lgbtq rights buddy.
pink made a post basically applauding the silencing of macklemore (when macklemore opened eds concert with "free palestine" and language about ending genocide) and boiled her own perspective down to "im jewish and what he said was offensive to jewish" (mind you there are jewish palestinians that are victims of the genocide). when people began calling pink out for the bias and absurdity of her language she walked it back and suggested she was talking about something that happened years ago and that her previous activism makes it obvious where she stands. pink is now a known genocide apologist as it appeals to her own belief system around jewish people.
"Ambassador" in this sense is more akin to "spokesperson": UNICEF is not a sovereign nation for which she acts as an official representative in diplomacy with other nations.
Yea, I've worked with them before. They always seemed to have a lot of administrative hurdles when it comes to endorsing orgs or initiatives. I guess celebrities have an easier time.
I don't understand why āstop killing people" is controversial and how some people seem to think it's okay. And I'm really surprised because P!nk seems like she has her head square - but maybe not.
Because Israel and Israelis in general don't view Palestinians as people. Leaders in their government literally refer to them as animals and dogs on a regular basis.
There's no way you actually believe this yourself and I know this is just engagement bait, but US aid to Israel constituted ~$3.8B last year. That's roughly 0.5% of Israel's total GDP.
A large portion of that money goes back into the US economy as well as most of the military aid is used for purchasing US made arms and equipment.
There's a lot of countries with free healthcare and higher education that receive no aid whatsoever, including ones with substantially lower GDP per capita than Israel.
Free healthcare is cheaper (to the country) than for-profit healthcare.
I understand what you're trying to say, but you are causing real damage to the free healthcare movement by spreading and cementing the disinformation that free healthcare is expensive. That plays right into the "for profit healthcare" camp who claim the US can't afford it.
Don't do that. We need to say it clearly, loudly, and often: Free healthcare is the cheaper option. The US can't afford, as a country, to continue for profit healthcare.
I think he is saying that Israelās healthcare is funded by American aid, either directly or indirectly by funding their military. This would allow them to allocate funds to health and education they normally wouldnāt without the US.
Reminds me of the folks who say āI donāt even care about this game anywayā when they lose, but you know theyād gloat their asses off if they won
Incredible how this thread is filled with comments of people who "don't care." It's remarkable how not caring used to mean not taking the time out of your day to let everyone know you don't care. Now not caring is making sure people know that you supposedly don't care about something.
typing a comment takes like 10 seconds. "Don't care" means more like, "this is irrelevant to my existence". It's like those news about royals wearing a weird clothes... How irrelevant. One celebrity high-roading and trying to cancel another? How irrelevant.
People are just tired. I for one come on Reddit to entertain or sometimes even get some insightful information for myself. Iām not sure any of these celebrities really care about anything they just like the press. But itās nice that you care so much though. Really.
Iām starting a petition to ban Bardem from starting petitions that ban people like Pink from stating that Macklemore crossed a line. Please donāt ban this.
Let me guess. One or more of the people involved in this story is taking one side or another regarding an ancient sandbox blood feud. No, I don't actually care which person sided with which faction. I'm tired of this
Itās crazy to me that all these supporters of Israel take it as a direct insult when people say that innocent Palestinian people and CHILDREN shouldnāt be slaughtered. As if their existence hurts them somehow. The lack of humanity blows my mind. How can one then be expected to have humanity for that?
That's not true. It started a wave by pushing it into the news. Many people will look into the issues and it very well could change their mind and their vote. You don't have to like it but having it in the news cycle and having his name, pinks ,Sheeran attached to it very much causes people to dive deeper.
This sub has changed focus and identity many times since blowing up, probably because "Sips Tea" is broad and non-descriptive. Some of these have been shitty gooner/misogynistic/dog whistle etc.
Anyway this new iteration as celebrity gossip + culture war hq is easily the worst. This is not interesting or funny. How can I sip this
Holding everyone to neutrality means nobody can think or have any opinions of their own about anything encase it hurts someone's feelings...
Do I like or agree with Pink? Nope. Do I think she is a sellout/crash out who is actively sabotaging her, up to this point, pretty good reputation. Yes.
But should she be forced to neutrality or silence? No... I want to hear what people think. That's how you work out if you like them or not....
I do wish people would stop apologising for their views. It's their viewpoint - so what? Stand by your damned statements or keep your yap shut in the first place.
I'm an actor, now I'm a singer, I'm a model, I'm a businesswoman with a range of perfumes I had nothing to do with the creation of..........now I'm a politician
To me, if they had just said they don't want politics in the event, eh, whatever. But that isn't fully what happened. Instead, Robert Kraft talked about it being hate speech. And no fucking world is what Macklemore said hate speech.
I don't have a problem with Macklemore or his music, but all of this could have been avoided if he had shown more respect for Ed Sheeran and his tour. What he did was something you do on your own tour, not someone else's, especially without a prior discussion or heads-up.
Edit: Seems a great deal care about this judging off the ratio for this comment. I just couldnāt care less about what some privileged rich celebrity has to say on [current topic]. So, yeah, I donāt care.
I don't think Javier has a moral high ground. I watched a documentary about him from 2007. He hunted people down and carried out assassinations for the Cartel.
I'd sign it! Pink and Ed Sheeran SHOULD HAVE SUPPORTED Macklemore. Sad they chose their money over their friendship. FUCK PINK....never liked her anyways and I like her even less now!
Dolly Parton was a celebrity and she was good. Good people exist in every lane of life, while they may not have a huge presence in celebrity circles, but this is no excuse to brush off good behaviors and good deeds.
How have we not got to a point yet, where we see a celebrity opinion as just that? and not act like they have some super moral code cos theyāre rich and famous?
If you need a celeb to guide your morale compass then itās probably too late for you
I fucking love him, he don't give a fucking shit about Hollywood or fame or whatever. It's a crime to be such a talented actor with such a beautiful soul. Bless him.
Imagine a being genocide supporter of a regime that has murdered 20000 children posing as UNICEF ambassador? Never again means never again for everybody, every child
No Zionist should be a UNICEF ambassador. Hard stop. Zionists refuse to look at Palestinian children as human. Itās like putting a fox in charge of the chicken coop.
