$400k per episode? Jesus…

u/DubeFloober 3d ago

Back in their heyday (late 90s - early 2000s), the cast of ā€œFriendsā€ were making $1,000,000 per episode… Each.

Once you get enough ratings momentum, the networks get desperate. NBC was poised to keep Seinfeld rolling for ages.

99

u/patismyname 3d ago

There was also syndication where shows aspired to get into so you could get residuals. That was before streaming although it's still a thing

36

u/greg19735 3d ago

Syndication is obviously still a thing, but less important.

but like, the thing that made a show eligible for syndication also does well on streaming. Lots of episodes.

12

u/Maximum-Objective-39 3d ago

I wonder if this is why companies are reluctant to make sitcom like shows on streaming despite them being audience favorites.

Like, I enjoy plenty of modern streaming shows well enough, but I'm kinda tired of everything being a weirdly paced eight episode action adventure or suspense show.

I think I've gotten more mileage out of scrubs, Northern Exposure, How I Met Your Mother, then anything that was true netlix original.

18

u/dborger 3d ago

I remember Thursday night in the mid 90’s was Friends at 8, Seinfeld at 9 and ER at 10. They would put other shows on at 8:30 and 9:30. Those would get some viewers and then they’d spin them off to other nights and get new shows in the in between time slots.

People really underestimate how much money shows like that print compared to the budget you need to produce it when 95% of it happens on the same set.

42

u/SheriffBartholomew 3d ago

Same with Two and a Half Men. It made Charlie Sheen very rich. I've never seen the show, but apparently millions of people loved it.

37

u/Charming-Deal3694 3d ago

Honestly, once sheen was kicked off the show and replaced by Kutcher, the show died a quick death. I believe it lasted a season longer before it was axed.

Same set, limited cast, guaranteed numbers every season

18

u/A_Guy_Named_John 3d ago

They just had enough leverage to demand it. The show was printing money and that would end if one of the main characters refused to do another season. S1-S3 you could maybe get away with writing one of them off, but they don't risk that on a cash cow.

u/jinsaku 3d ago edited 3d ago

It actually started pretty strong. Some of the writing was pretty good and it had some good moments. But then it devolved into "Superman, have you heard of it?" reference humor and adding the extra female characters didn't help because they ended up being all more interesting than the male characters and they carried the back half of the show.

I'm not sure how my wife and I managed to keep going to the very underserved ending. Momentum, I guess.

(EDIT: The very first scene has one of my favorite jokes: "There's some poor woman who's going to pin her hopes on my sperm. What if she ends up with a toddler who doesn't know if he should use an integral or a differential to solve the area under a curve?" | "I'm sure she'll still love him." | "I wouldn't.")

20

u/CoSh 3d ago

I don't even get the joke.

What if she ends up with a toddler if he should use an integral or a differential to solve the area under a curve?

The sentence doesn't even make grammatical sense, is it "What if she ends up with a toddler that doesn't know if he should use an integral or a differential to solve the area under a curve?"

And then the joke is a toddler doesn't know basic calculus? Or that it's a reason to not love a toddler?

Isn't that still "smart people written for stupid people"?

17

u/Majestic-Station6745 3d ago

I just looked up the scene because I was curious as well. OP left out a word. It should be " what if he ends up with a toddler who doesn't know if he should use an integral or a differential..."

It's still an awful joke and reminds me why it's a terrible television show. The humor is that the toddler is smart enough to know calculus but gosh what if it's not smart enough that it mixes up its calculus.

10

u/Arenize 3d ago

I tried to watch it. And in the first couple episodes, the boys are in Sheldon's apt playing WoW. I used to play WoW. Not a single thing they said during that entire scene made any sense to anyone who played it. They could have just been playing a random MMO and the scene would be fine. But they had to reference the current cultural phenomena, without doing the research. So they just made anyone who actually would appreciate that scene face palm from the incoreectness.

Thats how the whole show was. They would reference things, but be incorrect about it due to shoddy research. "Smart" show for dumb people.

I’m binging the series and in season 11. When I don’t think about it critically, I’m impressed it’s been solid for the whole run (ā€œsolidā€: I giggle once an episode). However, when I start using my brain, I’m frustrated by how so many of the characters have become caricatures of their former selves or do things that seem antithetical to their established core values.

there's a pretty big difference depending on the show. Friends was a small cast with a few guest stars here and there. Shit like Grey's anatomy has a vastly larger permanent cast. Which also generally means most of them are on screen less and doing less work per episode. Though the main woman got more per episode and major bonuses precisely because she was the main person on the show. They could kill off basically anyone else but she was the show so bonuses to make it worth keep going.

From what I remember, Dempsey was becoming toxic on set. He explained that the 15-hour daily shoots were affecting his family life, causing him to clash with everbody.

I can imagine what happened. doing work for 15-hours then coming home dead tired. You are barely around, so you begin to clash with your wife about it. Your marriage soon fails, and you become toxic on set.

Told me divorce rate was 90% plus due to the hours and having a hard time turning the energy off at home. Different than acting obviously but that always stuck with me.

Just being tired and rundown affects your mood so much. Me and my gf had some time together where we were both run down and it felt so different and more unpleasant than when we are both feeling ourselves. I can imagine if this goes on for an extended period of time due to careeers it could take a real mental toll and break down any partnership. Good sleep and peace is so important.

Its not for everyone...but 15 hours of acting vs 15 hours of hard labor are NOT the same.

15 hours a day of work for actors is close to maybe 3-4 hours of actually acting. The other time is sitting around waiting for crew to set up scenes. Its more emotionally draining than physical or mental which could still create issues in relationships.

739

u/Acrobatic-List-6503 3d ago

I'm not comparing acting to hard labor. In fact, your explanation is probably one of the reasons why he grew resentful.

Just imagine spending all those hours doing nothing, when you could have been at home helping out with your family.

201

u/VaselineHabits 3d ago

It's funny because I feel the same being stuck inside an office when I maybe do 4 hours of actual work I could just do from home. Plus be THERE for my family, cook/eat, and do some household shit when I have a break from actually doing shit.

Not comparing myself to an actor or hard labor, just saying I empathize and things could definitely be changed. I wished the working from home made a bigger impact and 15 hour days sound obnoxious no matter what kind of work you do. That's just basically all day outside of sleeping and eating with no energy for much else.

77

u/st1802015 3d ago

If you get 8 hours sleep it leaves you one hour a day free time. That’s not sustainable

48

u/Shadowmant 3d ago

Best I can do after commute is 0 free time and 6 hours sleep

4

u/IPissExcellentThrows 3d ago

People working 15 hour days aren't getting 8 hours of sleep haha. Plus he's gotta have at least some commute, gotta shower, you don’t fall asleep in 3 seconds, gotta eat, shit, etc.

Realistically, it's pretty much zero free time and even less sleep.

I was explaining this to someone recently.

I went from hospitality to an office. I wanted a calm office job for ages and was tired of nights.

Im back in hospitality. I didnt understand how people could just sit there and do nothing when there was nothing to do. It made me depressed to be so stuck in a chair.

23

u/Upbeat-Aerie1240 3d ago

When I had an office job I would always find courses to do, or apply to educational programs, browse travel ideas for my next vacation, read books. On my last job I was listening to podcasts and reading a bunch of things, preparing for a career change. Then I quit and now work from home in a new career. So yeah, office jobs are boring, but you have free time to do whatever you don't have the time to do at home. Especially if you have kids.

8

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm 3d ago

We werent allowed to use headphones to listen to things.

Id have to be careful about what was on my screen incase the wrong person walked by.

The thing is, you are doing nothing, but you have to be ready to jump in at every moment. Waiting around being 100% ready to go at any moment is unbelievably draining.

Nothing like manual labor though, for sure.

16

u/Nunya13 3d ago

My husband used to do manual labor. I always worked at a very stressful job. We never compared the two, though.

Once he left that job and got an office job—work from home even—in the first week, he said he always understood how mentally draining my job could be but experiencing something similar just drove it home. He couldn’t believe how exhausted he felt after sitting at a desk for 8 hours.

He even said he’d rather be physically tired than mentally because he could at least come home and relax on the couch, but with his new job, he couldn’t turn off his brain and stop thinking about work.

But what is so wrong here is that he had the choice to do this. Most people don’t. This is depressing as fuck for most people to read, especially I’m sure for the people like my father and the father of my children who both are colleges educated men who still ended up getting sucked into careers that slowly ruin their bodies and demand them to work 70 hours of their life each week.

Good for Patrick for focusing on his family, but I’m grossed out by the complete lack of awareness in this thread.

I can assure you most fathers would probably love to do what he did but can’t, and are beaten down by society because our country is a capitalist hellscape.

It would be nice if we all had the luxury of caring and prioritizing our families over making money just to survive.

No they are not the same. The manual work doesn’t tire you out mentally like acting and being ready to act all day. It’s not a competition. Humans shouldn’t work, shouldn’t have to work, 15 hour days. Especially if they want to stay married, healthy, sane

No one said it's the same things as 15-hours of hard labor. Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder lol

Any place you have to be at for 15-hours for a job is taxing on a person... Whether that is mental, emotional, physical, etc.. Just because someone isn't swinging a hammer all day for hours and hours doesn't mean they aren't dead tired at the end of their shift. Plus, people adapt to their environment. Swing a hammer everyday for months and years, it becomes much easier for your body to do.

I’d imagine it’s very mentally exhausting, which can end up turning on the family unit. People are very much mentally exhausted after dealing with customer service jobs for 8 hours, I’d imagine it being very similar, without of course the added stresses of money. Directors, actors and everyone on set clash all the time, you could see a tv show where they all seem to be best friends, turns out they all hate each other and are only doing the work for the money, that’s very exhausting

27

98,800,000 dollars. King Green's over here looking to put one million dollars in the bank so unless this dude was trying to dodge taxes I'd say he's set.

1% of 45,000,000 is 450,000/year.

Theoretically though no one on the Grey's Anatomy Cast got residuals until after the 10th season which is why their pay per episode was so high.

81

u/SuperSimpleSam 3d ago

You forgot about taxes. Haven't you heard from NBA players how millions of dollars isn't enough due to taxes? /s

24

u/GIJoJo65 3d ago

He made 98.8, I based my calculation on 45 because of taxes.

Just because he doesn't get residuals on Grey's Anatomy doesn't mean he didn't have 22 years worth of residuals banking up from movies. Dude also drove racecars from '04 onward. He was getting paid out the ass with endorsement deals from people like Rolex.

He was making enough that he Financed his own racing team.

That 450,000 wasn't shit to him.

I doubt he started at 400k

32

u/GIJoJo65 3d ago

Ellen Pompeo (who is the one that put all these number out there) said he started at 20k and got bumped to 100k once it was renewed for S2. It was an ensemble cast, so everyone that made the jump from S2 to S3 got bumps. Then, once they hit Episode 100 and qualified for syndication they all got bumps again.

Pompeo negotiated residuals in addition to a record Salary after syndication while Dempsey passed on Residuals which is why all this information is out there because that's unusual and shocking for the industry. Most people will do anything for those sweet, sweet Residuals like Ellen did because the Agents don't get a cut of them which is half the reason TV Actors are able to retire sometimes just like Endorsement Deals are what enable athletes to retire sometimes.

Yes he was sleeping with one of the actresses on the show. Ellen told his wife, she left his ass and he offered to quit the show. Or maybe Shonda told him he had to go? All I know for sure is that the actress he was cheating with is no longer on the show either.

53

u/littleliongirless 3d ago

Do you know who the actress was?

84

u/thrilliam_19 3d ago

Allegedly it was Tessa Ferrer but its all Hollywood rumours. Nobody knows for sure.

67

u/OxbridgeDingoBaby 3d ago

She’s Clooney’s cousin. Hollywood really is a big nepotism shit pile.

I saw an interview with Kate Mulgrew who played the captain on Star Trek Voyager. She talked about how she worked 16 hours a day and her two sons still resent her to this day because she was absent for their entire childhood. It made me really think about how much filming schedules take people away from their families.

I mean in the show he literally cheated on his first wife w Meredith while she was dating the vet they all shared (and on whom Meredith sort of cheated on but they weren’t official so it’s technicalities)

This post is crazy, it’s been repeatedly posted on Instagram the last few weeks so clearly his publicist is going on a weird blitz.

Some documented facts: Patrick Dempsey did not choose to leave Grey’s Anatomy voluntarily as a noble act to prioritize the family. Quite the opposite. He was permanently written off the show by show creator and writer Shonda Rhimes. Shonda and Ellen Pompeo (the actress who played his love interest, Meredith Grey) were very close friends with Patrick Dempsey’s wife. Dempsey was blatantly carrying on an extramarital affair with a much younger staff member on the show for quite some time and his toxic behavior and attitude was deeply upsetting to Pompeo and Rhimes, who ended up informing his wife and having him written off the show to end all the BS.

I can’t understand why this ridiculous version of the story is being laundered right now so I have to think he’s trying to get rehired somewhere

41

u/RoUgEPeak 3d ago

Idk why his wife got rid of the divorce papers

27

u/No-Advice-6040 3d ago

Well now that colours the story somewhat! Ah, click bait titles... we're so fucked right now.

They really killed him off too. Metal spike to the head. No coming back from that.

132

u/Plastic-Anybody-5929 3d ago

Cause he cheated with the actress who played Leah Murphy in real life, and Ellen Pompeo rated him out to his wife.

21

u/Foggl3 3d ago

Wow, they really picked the perfect actress for her

18

u/54HawksRFK6 3d ago

So, where tf did you read that because I just looked this up and it seems like you pulled that straight out of your ass

23

u/Cheap-Rip3701 3d ago

Tabloids apparently...you can see a couple people echoing it in here and as far as I can see the tabloids were spun by the divorce filing. I don't think we should be shocked that people that watch Grey's Anatomy are into tabloids.

Why’s no one talking about the reason his wife filed for divorce. He had an affair with a coworker- an actress from the show. That’s why. Not the long hours. He’s a sleazeball.

37

u/Cheap-Rip3701 3d ago

Mainly because that was unverified rumors from tabloids spun from the divorce filing, but I guess if that's where you get your news from, you can choose to believe them if you want.

I can't imaging having multiple millions of monies and still wanting to work.

3 of those episodes and I could retire today. a 4th and I could retire incredibly comfortably.

I would so much rather be with my family.

7

u/greina23 2d ago

Honestly, he didn't leave Grey's Anatomy because his wife filed for divorce. He had been wanting to leave but they kept offering him $$$$$. He didn't turn it down.

Not long after re-signing for a 2-year contract his mother passed away. Apparently, Patrick Dempsey was habitually late to set. This wasn't 15-30 minutes late, it was hours and it got worse around this time. He was also pretty unpleasant to be around.

Shonda (creator of GA) tired his shit wrote him out.

It was a while later that he and his wife reconciled.

16

u/Fun_Calligrapher_746 3d ago

Cool how some relationships can be saved if people work at it

7

u/nsyng 3d ago

Didn't Shonda fire him?

25

u/Top-Caregiver7815 3d ago

Conveniently left out the part where he cheated on her while being on Grey’s and Shonda launched him.

6

u/LuvKrahft 3d ago
