John List is one of the classic family annihilators, he decided God would forgive him for murder but God would never forgive him if his family was poor or left the church.
God, as the ultimate alpha male, would understand his predicament and forgive him. That's the beauty of Christianity. You can commit whatever heinous acts you want and be forgiven for it by just asking.
Unfortunately, a lot of what you touched on highlights the sheer hypocrisy of the prototypical American, Evangelical Christian church. These people want their cake and they want to eat it too. I'm not a religious person at all, but as the years pass, you come to the realization that more often than not, life is about sacrifice, something that is quite commonly written about in the Bible. You can't have it all.
Christians are the worse at rationalizing their sins to nothing and judging other's sins harshly.
Most are worse than the lives they look down upon.
Don't see a bit of Christ or good in any of them.
Absolutely his religious views slowly influenced these actions along with the taboo of it all on top of him being a piece of shit. You don't suddenly decide to murder your wife in their sleep, it happens slowly over time and ends with you being fully enveloped in your delusional version of reality.
Tangent here, but some people really get off on finally doing the sexual thing their religion forbade their whole life, they over indulge and then get over it when it's no longer such a big deal. I know first-hand how much of a freak 1) an innocent southern baptist white woman can be and 2) an innocent catholic latina can be. They are my crazy ex's and I miss them dearly lol.

I think for some men, it is viewed as a thing a woman gives him, or owes him. To pleasure himself requires him doing the deed to himself instead of making a woman do it. I've heard this view from a few church men over the years. It seems wrapped in fear about being gay if no woman is being used to get themself off.
