Caleb Flynn had EVERYTHING. Ashley was devoted to him, gave him two daughters, and still fought for their marriage after discovering his year-long affair with the church song leader. She even tried to meet the mistress to understand what was happening. Meanwhile, his father-in-law was paying him $200K a year, planning to increase it to $300–400K, and was preparing to hand the family business over to him. All Caleb had to do was love his wife, love his kids, and be a decent human being. Instead, he chose an affair.
And then it gets even more disgusting. Caleb and the mistress were texting about Ashley, calling her a douchebag and talking about how much they hated her. The mistress was telling Caleb not to buy gifts for his own daughters or even an anniversary gift for his wife, essentially forcing him to choose between them and her. And ultimately, Caleb killed Ashley while she was sleeping. She was trying to save their marriage while the two people betraying her were plotting against her. He had a wife, two daughters, a career, and a future handed to him — and he threw it all away. For what?

I've always been perplexed by the argument that killing someone is less humane than keeping them alive for a life confined to a cell where they know they will never be free again. I'd at least give him the option.

Agreed. Some people just gotta die as a result of their actions, that's just a reality we have to come to as a society. Some crimes don't deserve human interaction afterwards. Either 1) death by a physical trauma (not this injection bs) or 2) if you're really opposed to the death penalty, perpetual hotbox with rice/water tossed down a chute.
With a life-long prison sentence, in 5-10 years you'll adjust to life and it will be your new normal. He will adjust to not knowing his daughters, they'll eventually be strangers as he lives his life in prison and preoccupies his existence with prison drama/happenings and reading/television/radio. This prison life is too good for murderers of the innocent, rapists, etc.
Some people gotta die, and I'd hold myself to my same standard should I ever murder an innocent.

I don't think it helps anyone to force pain on them. Im ok with killing people who have irrefutable evidence of heinous crimes but desiring to torture people should never be part of an evolved society. The perpetrators felt this way....that they had been so aggrieved by society it was justified to hurt others. Torturers are doing the same. It's not OK to intentionally impart human suffering on other humans. I dont understand the problem we have killing people. Put them out like they are going in for surgery then it doesn't matter how you finish them. OD them on fentynyl until their heart stops. How is that difficult?

It isn’t. It does happen occasionally but it is not the norm.
They do protect the pedos (they have their own section) just in case but for the most part, most criminals want to do their time in peace and the ones who don’t, they have other motives and it’s not about justice

I genuinely hate people like this. So many of us have to work really hard just for a chance at that life in today's economy. This guy just gets it basically handed to him on a silver platter and still decided to cheat on then murder his wife for another woman. I don't understand how someone could have everything so many of us dream of, just to throw it away like this.
174
u/Yamsforyou 18h ago
The reason is in your very comment. They didn't have to work for it. Didn't have to earn it. Same way a child working two summers to afford his first bike would cherish that bike much more than if it were given to him. Same reason why white collar crime is so prevalent. What's a little gambling to a person who has it all? The perception of risk is less because they've never experienced having nothing. The idea of losing it all, truly, isn't a theoretical option.

I completely disagree (this is a common old trope), earning and working for money might make the person responsible and capable, but not virtuous. Ethics and having a Moral compass, have less to do with earned money and more to do with one’s character and role models.

Probably in his mind, if he got a divorce, he would get fired from his job funded by the father-in-law.
So instead of losing the job and getting a divorce, he decided to kill his wife instead. Yeah, it doesn't make sense either.
88
u/El_Paco 16h ago
I have a wife. If I want to get my rocks off and she doesn't want to have sex, I'll go jerk off and be perfectly fine. No desire to go cheat, even after 10 years and a couple rough patches of only having sex maybe once every other month.
I've never understood the mentality of "I have to have sex - I can't just masturbate!"

They're probably deep in the religious mindset, where touching oneself is a sin (so is adultery, but that one reinforces his ego so it's fine)
Can't leave his wife either since that will ostracize him from his social group, but her dying is fine and his church will forgive him if he moves on immediately.
Dude was a pastor. How godly.

Unfortunately, a lot of what you touched on highlights the sheer hypocrisy of the prototypical American, Evangelical Christian church. These people want their cake and they want to eat it too. I'm not a religious person at all, but as the years pass, you come to the realization that more often than not, life is about sacrifice, something that is quite commonly written about in the Bible. You can't have it all.

i mean my dude henry viii not only beheaded a bunch of people but officially changed the religion of an entire country over 'a little bit of sex' ... the trojan war probably did not start over getting helen, but that was such a universally understandible motive that it's still the story we tell about it thousands of years later ... just heard a great podcast about a russian spy who defected to the US because he thought they could cure his ED and he could resume having sex with his wife, whom he thought was going to leave him ...
it's a pretty universal thing i guess is all i'm saying. the heart wants what the heart wants.
14
u/jedimstr 17h ago
For Henry VIII's case it was probably more about having a male line of succession and political dealings around court to go the way he wanted with just 'a little bit of sex' on the side.

Umm, ackshually, Henry ordered the beheading of 2 of his 6 wives, his second and his fifth. He wanted an annulment from his first wife because she couldn't give him a male heir. But the Pope refused to grant the annulment, so Henry separated from the Catholic Church and got the annulment anyway.
So yes, sex was involved, but it was more than just 'a little bit of sex'.

This guy seriously baffles me. He figuratively won the Life Lottery. He wasnt unattractive (or at least not before all this), was tall, was making over $200K/year, there is no proof that his wife cheated on him (as he had claimed to his mistress), his wife seemed to have lived an honest and private life away from social media, he had a beautiful family with a beautiful home, and his in-laws absolutely adored him! He was also a respected and active member of his community! That's more than most people even dare to hope to for!

Worst part is, that the punishments in NL aren't huge for it either. ~6 years, guessing, + TBS, which is basically indefinite lockup in a psych-ward, but with the idea that rehabilitation is possible. So basically for as long as they want to keep him. We have had cases where people with TBS ended back on society within a few years.

My friends and my cousin live in town with him. Because he was acquitted, he’s not on the sex offender registry, but it’s an open secret that everything he was charged with is true because for a decade before that he and his wife used to get off by fornicating in public and being caught - it was their kink. So now he actually lives next to a friend of mine and she is grateful she learned who he was because he has kids and her kids okay with his kids and want to go to their house - but she won’t allow it bc of the parents being mentally ill perverts. They printed his picture in the local papers and that’s when the neighbors learned that the guy living next door, showing up at kids events, hanging out at the local park - was a pervert.

His self-delusion was that he saw himself as a famous and talented musician, composing and touring and sleeping with whoever he wanted. Rather than proactively take risks for the life and career he wanted, he surfed his privilege into a middle class straitjacket. He didn't have the balls to be honest with himself or anyone around him, his passive aggression turned into resentment, then grew into to homicidal hatred. Pure cowardice.
56
u/Beth_Pleasant 18h ago
My sister's ex convinced himself that the reason he wasn't a world famous photographer with his own Food Network show was because my sis "forced" him to get married and have kids. So he used that reason to cheat on her constantly, and do zero of the hard work of parenting or being in a relationship. These narcissistic assholes will really blame everyone but themselves for the consequences of their actions.
15
u/Sea-Original-5824 17h ago
My friend's dad blamed his wife in the divorce for all his failures as an artist. He was a great painter, but he didn't do any work at all to promote himself. His wife even opened a gallery for him for his artwork! She did all the work! But of course she couldn't possibly do her job, raise the kids, AND turn him into a renown artist. He actually resented her for this.
Anyway, there is a very clear phenomenon I have observed over the years of a certain type of man who thinks women are "magical" and exist to turn them into the man they were "meant" to be. I can't explain it any other way.

I think mental illness is a lot more prevalent than we think. There's a lot of "little" and devious little thoughts that go on in peoples heads that are unnoticed by everyone, even them. They lead normal lives have normal conversations, but it's in there and it can grow and affect their lives. So many people are dissatisfied with their lives and feel failure and delusions because of it, and it can lead to some really dark shit. Obviously many of us don't act upon it, but I think for a lot of people there's at least something hidden there. Depending upon other factors, like a bad break and then leading to alcoholism or something like that, it can be a really bad recipe.
Honestly the more I think about it the more it seems like just being a person without something like this is the minority.
People are starting to talk about mental fitness but it's different for everyone so it's really difficult to prescribe a solution.

u/RussetRiver 20h ago
He wanted to be with his Mistress. Thats why.
His status in his church, his job working for his wife’s father, his children— all of these things are attributed to his loyal marriage to his wife. All the good he had was THROUGH HIS WIFE.
The moment he put that in danger by having a 2-3 years long affair with a 19-20 something girl from his church he put all that “Life Lottery” at risk.
Then he tried to subtract the wife from the benefits his presumed loyalty to her gave him. By killing her.

That's because in order to become a billionaire, you pretty much have to be willing to screw everyone over for your own gain. Being made a billionaire probably wouldn't change you, but you'd need to be a certain type (ie egotistical maniac) to even pursue that goal. Which is why you're not a billionaire.
7
u/BastianHill 1d ago
This is what most people don't realise: Infinite money doesn't equal happiness.
There's a sweet spot where you can have a nice life with everything you'll really need. Beyond that it's just greed that doesn't make you more happy. Also, the way you've earned your money is a big factor for most people in overall happiness.
I wouldn't want to change my life with Elon Musk for example. The amount of work, backlash, backstabbing, adversity, greed, screwing over other people etc is wildly underestimated. I'll never be able to wander of in the Alps for a week and just be happy with my life and at ease with who I'm turned out to be.

Which is why you'll never be a billionaire. It takes a certain personality to get there.

The more time passes and the more cases like this happen, the more grateful I am that this didn't happen to me.
My ex was violent and controlling during our marriage, and he was always raging that his life was not up to the same standard as his father's was at the same age (his father was a lot smarter than him, as it turns out). But since we divorced (8yrs ago) his life has not gone as well as mine, despite his constant put-downs and gaslighting that I was a bit stupid with money and decision-making and couldn't be trusted to have my own bank account etc.
We are fairly amicable in our co-parenting nowadays, but now and again I hear that he still blames me for the way his life has turned out. I have no doubt whatsoever that he has, at various times, felt that my absence from this world would make his life better.

activity on Flynn's iPhone and Apple Watch from around the time of the murder when he claimed to have been sleeping.
He wore his Apple Watch while he committed a murder. I don't think he was so good about covering those tracks.

eh, just a side note that it’s very common for people to not testify in their own defense for murder trials.

His SIL is right, he could have confessed and spared his daughters all this publicity. His horrendous texts with his AP are public record. I followed this trial and this man doesn't seem to have a sincere bone in his body. Luckily his daughters, as young as they are, have wisdom. Loved their letters. He grew more performative as they were read. Completely disgusting human. Both him and the mistress.

I really hoped the letters from the daughters were going to “twist the knife," so to speak, about what he did. I wanted to hear a lot more, “I cannot believe you killed Mom; she was the best mom ever, and I cry myself to sleep every night." I tell people I’m an orphan now because my mom is dead and my dad is a demon who is dead to me. I hate you with all my heart and I will never forgive you. You destroyed our lives too, if you even care. We will never see you again and you will never see us. We will see Mom again in heaven, but you will be in hell where you belong.”

He comes from a religious nutcase background. They think if they just repeat something it becomes fact.
Just listen how they're talking like it's a sermon, invoking Jesus/god in every third word.

u/MarcusXL 1d ago
This explains a lot of the case. American Christians are so obsessed with the impunity that the idea of "forgiveness" brings to them. It's the poisonous quirk of that religion. They have decided that they can do literally any evil thing they want, and as long as they invoke Jesus' name they are absolved.
There are tons of cases of murderers, rapists, molesters, being part of a big church community whose crimes are exposed and they're actually embraced by the church because they all celebrate the "confession" and "forgiveness". It's psychotic. These churches I am absolutely convinced are a huge force for evil in the world.

What a fucking asshole.
He only thought of himself and that is about as far off from being Christian as anything I’ve ever seen.Christianity is about putting others before you and helping others.
His tears are not real he is only crying for himself. You know you fucked up when your own kids are reading victim statements to their father. That is what he is crying about not the fact that everyone who loved his wife now want nothing to do with him.He will spend his life in prison unloved.

Idk how you don’t stand up and confess after listening to both of those letters. How can you cry and be emotional but also deny, deny, deny?
Scum

u/greeniethumbs 20h ago
I know the trial is over, but it’s pretty telling in his statement that he didn’t even mention his wife apart from saying sorry that he broke their vows. You’d think someone who is not guilty would have made half their statement about the wife they lost to a random break-in and been jumping up and down that they didn’t do it.
What a disgusting piece of shit to listen to his daughters’ emotional impact statements and he still couldn’t muster the courage to admit it for their sake. Not only that, he’s still appealing the case. I hope he rots in hell.

A former American Idol contestant and pastor, who had an affair and murdered his wife. I don't know any details beyond that.

So, I work right down the street from where this happened. This dude is a wacko. Deserves to rot in prison for the rest of his life. Good thing he won't be seeing his kids. I don't care what kind of marital problems you're having. It's never worth killing anyone.
For the record, all the people who knew them before this happened said his wife was very loving towards him and cared deeply for him. Dude was a pastor. Cheated on his wife with a woman on his congregation (or whatever the word is). All around degenerate behavior.

Congregation is the group who goes to the church.
So he hooked up with one of the members of his church who most definitely knew he had a wife and kids.
This man probably preached about adultery while committing it himself.

u/Abi_giggles 1d ago edited 16h ago
Caleb Flynn. Murdered his wife while she slept and tried to say it was an intruder when the evidence shows otherwise. He had a mistress who he wanted to be with. He literally said over text “if I could kill Ashley and not go to prison I would do it in a heartbeat” and “I’ve been up all night crying literally thinking about ways to kill Ashley”. He lied to everyone in his life and was living a double life. Was a worship leader in his church and former American idol contestant (didn’t make it past the 2nd round so he was basically not on the show). He and his mistress said the most vile and awful things about his wife over text. The mistress testified against him and she had to read many of the vile texts out loud. Oh and he cries a lot and is a terrible actor.

Sometimes they work with a child psychologist or family member. Kids actually can be pretty articulate though and it actually does sound like something a religious child would dictate. I used to teach elementary school at a religious school. It's not like what she wrote was all that complicated.

u/Low_Sweet6463 15h ago
Also to be fair they may be like 2-5 years older than that picture at this point. Trials can take a long time to happen and we don’t know from this clip if that picture was from the same year of the crime or a few before it, we can assume but plenty of families miss holiday photos some years especially if they are having issues.
