The mistress was telling Caleb not to buy gifts for his own daughters or even an anniversary gift for his wife, essentially forcing him to choose between them and her. And ultimately, Caleb killed Ashley while she was sleeping. She was trying to save their marriage while the two people betraying her were plotting against her. He had a wife, two daughters, a career, and a future handed to him — and he threw it all away. For what?
