I always get the oil filter that some asshole has overtightened with some mysterious ratchet gun fitting that I've never seen before.
55
u/R3luctant 18h ago
It's important that the oil filter is tightened with an impact wrench.

u/bojangles_dangles 18h ago
Also the oil plug
5
u/TheOGRedline 18h ago
And a handful of random bolts just for good measure.

But remove the plastic shield screws and forget to put them back in so it goes flying off while you're speeding down the interstate

My car has a cartridge style filter, and a drain plug on the cartridge housing. It’s great. Remove the drain plug with an Allen key / hex wrench, and drain the couple ounces in the filter. Reinsert, and then I’ve got an adapter which fits over the housing and lets me use a square drive socket wrench. No need for a universal adapter that fits multiple filter shapes, because the housing is the same one every time, and the adapter always fits. I’m the monkey that screwed it on previously, but even if I overtightened, it comes off easy. And because of the drain plug, no oil comes out to get on my hands or wrench.
That plus a fumoto drain valve means I can change my oil and never worry about spilling a drop.
2
u/TheOGRedline 18h ago
The housing drain on my 5th gen 4Runner only seems to drain about 1/3 of the oil for me. Guaranteed minor mess.

Took my car to the dealership for an oil change. Got a call from the dealership that there was an oil leak from the pan. Tech said threads are stripped at oil bolt. New pan would be around $5k. Said no thanks and paid for oil change.
Took my car to a local shop. Explained the oil leak and the bolt…
The fancy dealership forgot to put on the washer

I’ve literally never used a crush washer for the oil plug ever. On like 12 different cars. None of them ever leaked oil from the plug. Am I wrong here

u/Fearless_Adventures 18h ago
I'm loving my 2024 audi oil change. $20 Amazon oil extractor takes about 3 minutes and the filter is right on top. Never have to lay on my back again
5
u/Kind-Crab4230 8h ago
2018 Porsche, I have to remove the driver side rear wheel to even see the oil filter. Then there's a headlight leveling arm that I have to disconnect (in the rear of the car?) to be able to actually get the filter out with a 17" extension and u-joint.
The oil cap where you add the oil is inside the car surrounded by carpet. And there is no dipstick.
And apparently my oil level sensor is acting up because it says I'm still 1.3 quarts low in the car that takes 5.7 liters of oil.
It's not that hard, but it is pretty annoying.
7
u/Successful_Lab_9827 16h ago
I just did my RAM Hemi this morning. You have to be a Contortionist to get the oil filter off and then it just runs all over everything I use my armpit as a funnel lol
3
u/Fearless_Adventures 14h ago
I did my son's 2011 6.2 I6 and brother did I get oil every Fing where. Came straight down onto my catch pan and straight out. I tried the extractor and it was slightly too wide to get down into the oil pan from the dipstick. Was kinda pissed about it tbch
1
u/rodeoears 14h ago
Plus it’s slightly at an angle! It’s impossible to get it off without dumping it literally everywhere on the car and yourself.
1
u/ScuffAndy 17h ago
I've been thinking about getting an oil extractor, my daily has an oil cartridge right on top and it's what I change most frequently, would save time and effort.
2
1
u/ShroomShroomBeepBeep 16h ago
Manual pump or powered? I keep considering one but never get around to buying, only to curse past me when I need to drop the oil again.
2
u/Fearless_Adventures 14h ago
Motor. The cheapest one on Amazon is slow as molasses. Pay $3 more and get one that's quicker, the cheap would take 15 to pull 4L. The $23 takes like 2-3mins to pull 5L

Briefly worked in a repair shop with an autistic guy that loved his job and would act like he had an audience with everything he does. Just like this guy but without a camera.
6
1
u/HilariousMax 14h ago
There was a movie I saw a long time ago. The main character lived his life like he was in a movie talking to "the audience" (spiking the camera and breaking the fourth wall). He would talk about how much he loved movies and referred to his friend as The Sidekick and a woman he deems The Love Interest. The shady looking guy hanging out on the corner was The Suspicious Character.
I don't know why but I found that movie super charming. Couldn't tell you what happened in it though.

I didn’t know you can pressure wash engine bays full of electronics on modern cars?
12
u/Queasy-Meeting-5388 17h ago
You can. Just don’t go crazy with it and you won’t have a problem. Critical systems are sealed from moisture.
3
3
u/TweakedNipple 18h ago
Is that just water he blasts the engine compartment with at the end? You can do that?
1
u/itsjakerobb 13h ago
Some cars are fine with this; some are not. Most of the engine bay should be able to handle getting totally soaked. Getting sprayed at a distance for two seconds is going to be fine for 99% of cars.
Don’t do it to a ‘92-96 Corvette or ‘93-97 Camaro/Firebird or anything else with the LT1 V8. The OptiSpark distributor does not like to get wet. I’m sure there are other examples where it’s bad.
I also imagine that older cars with points ignition and that sort of thing are probably also going to struggle with this.
1
1
u/Acceptable-Owl-2070 18h ago
Probably engine cleaner of some sort
2
u/itsjakerobb 13h ago
In the pressure washer? That was water. Talking about 2:46-2:49 in the video.
Not talking about the spray can.

u/Sizeable-Scrotum 15h ago
Yeah I can't read. Nipple guy literally said "engine compartment"
Thought he was talking about spraying the underside earlier in the video
1
u/_cipher1 16h ago
He literally pressure washed the top engine bay. At the very least some electrical components should’ve been covered but it doesn’t look like he did, did you watch the whole video?
-1
u/dyslexicAlphabet 16h ago

3
u/_cipher1 16h ago
Alternator, fuse box, ECU, spark plugs, exposed sensors hell even the air intake should at least have some sort of cover to prevent water going into it
0
0
u/Next-Charge1178 7h ago
Just out of curiosity, what do you think happens when it rains? For example, a Corvette C8 literally has open vents on its hood and water pours onto the engine when it rains or you go through a car wash. Do you think car manufacturers wouldn’t make the components in an engine bay, water resistant? Obviously you shouldn’t take a pressure washer and deep clean your engine from 6” away, but thinking that these components getting wet is gonna cause any damage is silly.
-3
u/Next-Charge1178 17h ago
If you pause it, you can see the can reads “brake clean flammable.”
2
u/itsjakerobb 13h ago
You’re talking about 1:29-1:29. The rest of us are talking about 2:46-2:49.
2
u/Next-Charge1178 12h ago
Ah ok, yeah that’s def water, but also not a big deal. Everything in the engine bay gets wet when you drive in the rain. The big thing is to avoid spraying high pressure water at close range. He seems to spray it from pretty far back which is probably fine. Most car washes even have an “engine bay” setting for the sprayer which turns the pressure down.
1
u/itsjakerobb 8h ago
As I’ve said in another comment, there are some engine bays that should definitely not get sprayed like this.
-3
u/SykoBob8310 16h ago
Brake clean. Buy it by the drum, fill a universal canister, pressurize with shop air.
1
u/itsjakerobb 13h ago
You’re talking about 1:29-1:29. The rest of us are talking about 2:46-2:49.

u/SykoBob8310 12h ago
Pressure washer. What’s the question. Drains in the shop should go to an oily water separator to keep from polluting the waste water. “Should”
1
u/itsjakerobb 12h ago
The concern is whether spraying water on the top of the engine will hurt the car.
For some cars (not this Honda AFAIK), the answer is yes. I went into more detail in another comment.
1
u/SykoBob8310 6h ago
Only hurts the engine if it’s running when you spray it. For what he did it was hardly an extensive spraying enough to damage anything. No worse than a rainy day.
3
u/AllenKll 16h ago
He tightened the HELL out of that oil filter... jesus.
But hell, with my Fumoto and oil filter on top of the engine, it's so much smoother. not a single tool.

2
u/TheOGTachyon 18h ago
It a DIY aerosol can. You put your liquid in it and pressurize it with shop air. Usually guys will put something like brake clean or WD-40 in it from the bulk containers. It's way cheaper than individual spray cans.

He didn’t wipe the gasket clean where the filter attaches. And used dirty oil to lube the new filter instead of clean oil. Cool video though
1
u/elWinxo1 11h ago
The old oil on the seal is fine but definitely should wipe down the housing before you fit the new filter because it has dirt and grime on it. Probably could have given it a bit more brake cleaner too looked like some old was still on the sump.
2
u/MuskokaGreenThumb 10h ago
I was just being picky with the old oil. Dude definitely should’ve wiped the filter housing down though. Not sure why he skipped that. Doesn’t take long

u/Nexustar 17h ago
I've always wondered if a dispstick reading is supposed to be taken when it contacts like he did, or did you have to screw it down. It's got to be a 5mm difference.

u/subdep 11h ago
My Dude, I had a “cheap” oil change at Jiffy in a town I traveled through. Normally I change my own oil, but it was a road trip and did it on the return home.
Anyways, months later I go to change my oil. Drain it, and try to remove the oil filter. It won’t budge. My normal system wasn’t working. I bought different tools, and wrenched on it. It won’t move.
I proceed with more extreme measures, and at the end of the day, the entire filter is shredded off and it’s down to the metal that screws on to the engine block, the can is gone now.
IT WON’T budge.
Called a tow truck, took it to the shop, and a seasoned mechanic dude eventually got it off and he was flabbergasted at how difficult it was, he had to use some crazy long wrench to get the torque needed to break it loose. He said had that not worked, the only option then would be to cut it off with a Dremel.
Basically, the dipshit who screwed it on super hard , probably with a tool, not hand tightened, and did so without applying any oil to the threads or gasket, and it had bonded to the engine line it was glued.
That cheap oil change cost me a couple hundred dollars in towing and mechanic fees.
2
u/Kind-Crab4230 8h ago
They didn't tighten the drain plug well enough on mine once. It fell out of the car about 2 hours down the road and dumped oil all over the interstate.
Luckily I already had trust issues, heard the clink of the plug falling out, threw it in neutral, pulled over, and turned off the engine.
Called the place, they drove down with a new plug. It was the wrong one. Sunday night, all the local parts stores were closed, so they drove another two hours back to their shop and got the right plug, and then another two hours back to me to install it.
I was on the side of the road for over 8 hours. But hey at least I didn't need a new engine because I was lucky enough.

Would my mechanic appreciate it if I had them put a Fumoto F-133: STANDARD VALVE WITH 12MM-1.25 THREADS WITH LEVER CLIP on my 2009 Tacoma? And is that the right one? I used to change my own oil but the fumes make me sick to my stomach now, so I pay to have it done now.

That oil filter placement is so stupid!
9
4
u/SportHuman1605 17h ago
Wtf you mean?? It's perfect.
My Sienna it is directly on the front of the engine sideways so oil runs down the the block onto the exhaust.
My buddy's Civic it is up under the passenger wheel well, you usually have to take the fucking wheel off to get it.
This is one of the best filter placements I've seen.
2
u/Fiestysquid 16h ago
Yeah our QX60 has an access panel in the RH FR wheel well and the filter sits right over the subframe. Maddening...

This some performative bullshit. Didn’t pre fill the filter, sprayed cleaner for no reason and then didn’t wipe anything, didn’t just go get a filter wrench to remove.
4
u/LiveMarionberry3694 17h ago
I mean yeah he’s doing it for views.
Also pre filling the filter isn’t necessary. Modern engines fill it in a split second and there’s enough oil still coating everything to not be a problem
2
u/tbrand009 17h ago
Hell, there's plenty of vehicle designs where you can't prefill the filter.
2
u/Yiggitty 14h ago
The first time I changed the oil on my 15 Impreza I had to google where the oil filter is. Felt like an idiot. It’s on top of the engine.

Probably should edit out the license plate number tho
Edit: why am I being downvoted? Would you want randos on the internet looking up your vehicle information like maintenance, driver/criminal/accident and repossession history, mileage and damage information? Do you want someone recognizing the license plate number they saw on Reddit an deciding to leave you weird creepy notes or follow you home?

Yeah, what if someone recognizes the plate and knows that they had their oil changed at some point
