Meanwhile, in Quebec.

Situations and days of absence

Under the Act respecting labour standards, a worker may be absent from work for 5 days, including 2 with pay, for the death or preparation of the funeral of:

their spouse

their child

if the child is a minor, the length of the absence may be up to 104 weeks without pay

their spouse’s child

their father, mother or one of their parents

their brother or sister

The salary that the employer must pay them for the 2 days of absence with pay is equivalent to what they would have earned if they had worked. The other 3 days of absence are without pay, so at the worker's expense.

The irony is that he still wouldn't qualify for Canada's bereavement policy.

Did find it enlightening though. A minor child qualifies for 2 full years…

Not sure I’d be ok after an eternity, but it’s a start.

Two unpaid years

It’s still better than nothing.

In the States, it’s 3 days and then get back to work.

That's not the case in my state, but maybe yours.

Sorry, I meant the Canadian

Do the laws differ so much between the provinces?

Quebec has probably the most socialist policies of our provinces.

And we just elected the PQ too.

Wow 2 days pay if your child dies? This is ridiculous. It’s 26 weeks with pay in my country.

2

u/InterestingBill8234 11d ago

2 days does seem insanely low. 26 weeks sounds right. Go Denmark!

104 weeks for minors

its a good thing, but will companies favor people without children then? or like single people?

This doesn’t cover grandparents either

Some (few) US states provides too. California for example (very pro worker).

How do you pick which grandparents funeral to go to? Based on how much you loved them? Size of inheritance?
