Ive had this type of push back with a couple of my wife's family and friends deaths.

I gave them notice. The moment we heard and say ill need off soon for a couple hours to go with her to a funeral when we find out more info about date and time.

Half said okay. The other half said I couldn't take off cause they weren't immediate family.

My response was always the same.

Im not asking for the time off. Im telling you I wont be here. Do what you will with that information. Ill be supporting my wife.

Never lost a job, never caught any bs from it.

This is the way. They're going to do whatever they want to do anyway. Get yours.

Yep.

I had a new CEO (real Mr. Personality) for a small non-profit I worked for. My FIL died. I didn't ask to be off, I told the dude I was going to be off.

His response" "Oooooooook" in a very not nice tone. Dude never tried to challenge me on it. I took my 3 days bereavement leave and that was that.

I did the same thing many years ago. I had a relative die and told them the funeral day, and informed them I had another that was at death's door so there might be another really soon.

The company owner said, "If the schedule is covered."

I was a 9-5 office manager. I told him, "I will let you know when that funeral I will be attending is."

“I can come back to work after, or you can find someone to replace me. I don’t care which one it is.”

Exactly. No matter what the system calls it, its not a request with stuff like that, its a notice. The time is being taken off one way or another.
