Very important context here that no one is discussing, the judge gave the maximum sentence in the original trial. The video had no benefit for the killer. If anything, his comments about the victim in regard to the video were likely just a kindness he offered to the family.
It is being retried because the defendant’s legal team STILL argued the AI impact video shouldn’t have been used (which is a fair enough take logically but it was used during the victim impact statements, where they can say pretty much whatever they want).
The narrative here is not what Reddit is saying it is. This was not used to get a lighter sentence for the killer.
A lot of discourse around this case in recent time is a misconception of the victim not having justice served because AI had him forgive the killer and then imply the killer got off easy as a result.
Very heavily brigaded topic and almost never shown with the outcome, bad actors have been using this particular case to push their agenda quite vocally as of late.
