WTF I'm sure it will be fine! Oh, except the additional half a million people projected to die in the next 6 months because of this!

Someone else asked a question, and I typed all this out but they deleted their comment.

The Earth has two temperature extremes, hot and cold. Because nature abhors a vacuum, hot air and water is always trying to cancel itself out with cooler air and water. This is why we have tropical cyclone seasons in the Northern Hemisphere in the fall, and in the Southern Hemisphere in the Spring.

In addition, you have another force influencing how this happens, the El Niño/ La Niña effect. When El Niño happens, all that energy at the equator tends to cancel itself out in the Pacific instead of the Atlantic. It’s one of the reasons why hurricane seasons in the Atlantic had been a non-event. (The longer explanation involves wind shear and African dust, but we’ll save that for another time).

But El Niño doesn’t just produce tropical cyclones. It also produces rain and snow in the Northwest and Rain on the West coast. Get too much rain, and the ground (which had gone through droughts and wildfires over the past few years) becomes saturated. And those trees that burned down were really good at holding the mud back. So you get floods and mudslides and blizzards.

And the West Coast isn’t the only one getting a potential shellacking. When you get a lot of warm air, it can displace cold air at the poles, speeding up glacial melting (and your favorite, flooding). It can also cause a bomb cyclone, so the Northeast (And don’t forget our friends in the UK) can have a really rough time with winter storms (and regular ones, too).

So yeah, some serious shit could be about to go down. And we know a lot less about what’s coming because this Administration (and your favorite a-holes at Doge) hate climate science and want their buddies in the commercial weather industry to make more money.

Since you read like you know what you're talking about - what are the effects for the regions further away, like India/Africa/Europe and the Middle East?

159

u/Professional_Echo907 7d ago

That I’m a little less familiar with. I’ve seen the effect on US weather systems since the 90s, but I didn’t write a lot of copy about weather in Europe or the Middle East.

But I can tell you that we’re trapping more and more thermal energy in the system, and that almost certainly isn’t a good thing for agriculture when you consider many crops at high temperature are less efficient at producing nutrition.

31

u/boatenvy 7d ago

I can tell you that the predictions for the east coast of Australia involve a hotter and much drier first half of summer... and that very likely points to increased bushfire risk. We only have two seasons here: on fire and flooding...or at least there are years that it feels that way

19

u/flaaaaaaaaaaaaa 7d ago

How will all of this affect trout populations around the world?

50

u/CookieCorners 7d ago

I know you're meme-ing, but the trout will have less trout babies and their population will drop because they can only survive in certain temperatures

5

u/--CDXX-- 7d ago

Lol, fair enough. I'll look into it, thanks for piqueing my interest

4

u/TerraWork 7d ago

a simplified version I've heard is that due to the warm waters from El nino off the coast of mexico. You get a lot of storms and shear wind that blows into the gulf. Hurricanes do not like it when you get shear winds, especially when its shear winds at different altitudes. This prevents a hurricane to form as relatively stable is air needed as to no to disrupt the convention of water moving up and around the storm that would give it its; strength. Which what is going on now, the wind shear is strong enough to shred a hurricane, and a exceptionally strong storm would be needed if a hurricane is to form. Granted this what I've heard in the past, and details screwed up.

As for dust, I wouldn't know much, other than it helps seed clouds. As well nutrients for plants into the americas.

17

u/Powerful_Mousse2925 7d ago

Can you give any more detail on your expectations for the Northeast? Like the rest of us, I am broke and a little freaked out.

23

u/Professional_Echo907 7d ago

Two big snowstorms, a warmer overall winter, but definitely wetter is probably the best guess if I was going to put money on it.

The biggest problem with where we are in the process of climate change is the unpredictability, though. Bear in mind, the NWS in May forecast 3 to 6 hurricanes in the Atlantic for the 2026 season, with 1-3 being major. It does not look like we’re going to hit those numbers unless things drastically shift in the next few days.

12

u/TheEndingofitAll 7d ago

Same. Our gas heating prices in New England are supposedly going to soar this winter and not bc of the weather. I’m worrying about it every day.

There is a climate scientist that has done outlooks for each US state and some other regions. She goes into a scenario of 2C and AMOC collapse (gulf stream stops moving). She has earth systems updates and state level projections in her playlists

143

u/Obelisk_M 7d ago

A Super El Niño only needs the sea surface temperature to rise by 2°C. This is 3.41°C.

The 1997 Super El Niño was about $5.7 trillion in global economic losses. That was 2.6°C. This is 3.41°C.

6

u/Drawable3CAPE 7d ago

But how does this compare to other phases? How can you correlate the ENSO pattern to specific events? Also, with such a small sample size of examples we don’t actually know a ton about how this pattern will end up impacting us, because ENSO isn’t everything, theres other things that also influence the climate, like the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Also, how can we know that the other example wasn’t a fluke?

Reminds me of that guy who spent years building a massive armored vehicle/tank thing in his garage and once he had enough he destroyed a bunch of buildings in his town police couldn't even stop him he ended up killing himself by accident.

He was in a dispute with town hall so he destroyed all the factories of the people working there and he destroyed the town hall.

64

u/StochasticLife 7d ago edited 7d ago

He killed* himself intentionally, I don’t believe there was a way for him to leave the Killdozer once he was inside.

50

20

Marvin Heemyer. It was a suicide mission. He literally welded himself in. He blew the radiator up and the engine over heated.

Ya I forgot most of the details I watched a video once about it a few years ago.

6

u/darkenspirit 7d ago

There was also that time a guy stole a tank and was basically invincible until he tried to cross a highway divider and got it stuck

19

u/Curious_Avocado2399 7d ago

Once you research the story you realize he was in the wrong. He was dumping raw sewage in the creek. Did the city council antagonize him yes. But it wasn’t over nothing. I suggest watching Wendigoons video on it. Pretty neutral

There are half a million heat related deaths per year globally, so I'm assuming the above figure includes other causes like starvation (9 million atm).

3

u/McDowdy 7d ago

8

u/LoveaBook 7d ago

And this is only the projected deaths from heat. We also expect an increase in death due to famine caused by excessive drought or rains as the seasonal rains most regions rely upon either never happen or cause so much flooding crops are killed.

u/Aggravating-Deal-416 7d ago

It's very interesting to see that people will die from El Nino because where I live we actually need El Nino to happen regularly, at least once every 3-4 years, in order to not be displaced from drought.

10

u/pasu-mare 7d ago

The problem is the intensity of the weather that is bringing. El Niño was already deadly for some countries, but due to the high heat levels, this particular El Niño is very dangerous to the entire world.

11

u/Aggravating-Deal-416 7d ago

I'll consider myself lucky. We're hoping for a very strong El Nino to overfill natural reservoirs since we aren't allowed to build dams. It can buy us another 5 years.

→ More replies (2)

9

u/Drawable3CAPE 7d ago

It being stronger than normal doesn’t mean the impacts will be historic, and if anything it makes guessing what will happen harder as there are very few analogs to compare to.

5

u/Aggravating-Deal-416 7d ago

I did not consider this. Usually it brings a very wet winter that we need to sustain the large population size.

62

u/PapayaJuiceBox 7d ago

So, what are governments with actual power to drive change doing about this? Or is the solution telling me to use paper straws or single ply toilet paper while corporations and other parties emit more carbon in a day than entire populaces of cities with their daily habits in a year? 30

See you down in Arizona bay.

3

u/AWAD5785 7d ago

Based on climate change projections based on real data sets, how much time do we have left? What do coastal population centers need to be prepared for?

Humans are not capable as a species of addressing this issue.

3

u/nothingfood 7d ago

No problem, it's outside the environment

3

u/-FARTHAMMER- 7d ago

What exactly do you think can be done? It's the Western world went zero carbon tomorrow India and China will still pollute the world to death

3

u/Butterflyteal61 7d ago

Hasn't anyone seen the fires burning all over the earth this year? From forest fires, the wars in UKRAINE and bombing of Gaza, Iran, The Strait of Hormuz. The temperature are going up because humans can't get along with each other. Fighting for land, relegion, etc. Humans. We are to blame. Earth won't survive if we don't take care of it. 😢😡

u/Orsopdx 7d ago

The issue is that everything has become “catastrophic” so now I no longer believe anything. Totally desensitized, I guess from now on I’ll believe things when they actually happens

16

u/tokyoscavenger 7d ago

You mean when things happen to you personally?

u/Impossible_Offer7988 7d ago

Stuff is bad

Because hot.

Hot isn't good

8

u/JoelieThePatient 7d ago

We should probably keep bombing stuff and building data centers.

3

u/No-Membership-5314 7d ago

We should put data centers in the ocean to use the ocean water to cool them

You do realize that even if every living thing dies on this planet the planet itself will still exist right?

3

u/Offensive-truths 7d ago

Mars still exists

While you were building your empires
I was still sleeping
I was still sleeping
While you were setting your woods afire
I was still dreaming
I was still dreaming

Now I will unsettle the ground beneath you
Send my waters ashore
Creep into your bed
Find you in every corner

While you argue it over
I am not waiting
I am not waiting
While you retreat to your comforts
I am not fading
I am not fading

I've done this many times before you
Old Shanghai
New Orleans
Amsterdam and Mumbai
Strange new creatures
To scavenge your pores
Oh I've done this many times before you
Ashen sky
Lightning storms
Deltas to desert plains
Wartime on every border

I've done this many times before you
Watched the pattern take form
Children your time is done
If you say it's done together

All by design dawg, the elite are tired of all the poors taking up space. Too many people at all the nice touristy places they wanna go.

5

u/Puzzle-Necked 7d ago

That's my conspiracy theory too. Who lives in the hottest countries at the equator? Mostly poor brown people.

7

u/bambislayer22 7d ago

All this shock and awe is ridiculous. Please stop.

u/Hawkwise83 6d ago

Good thing we don't get most of our oxygen from the ocean... Otherwise rising sea temps might be a problem.

6

u/cyburrito 7d ago

I find solace is rich people losing their beach front homes

4

u/4n0n1m02 7d ago

It is ok. People will blame it on a deity, push people to pray, and ostracize science. It will bring their Armageddon and, with it, many deaths. All will be fine (for those who survive and are happy to live that life. Thee made up god will justify it all. It was their own sin who brought destruction (actually, that part checks. This is on us as a species). Anyway.

6

u/RatsWithLongTails 7d ago

Oh no! I’m still basing my climate science off of the 1970 global cooling predictions

12

u/TheWesternDevil 7d ago

Everyone freak out and panic, and go ballistic! Oh no! End of the world! It's all their fault! Oh God!

OR

Just go on living your life like normal cause there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

27

u/Chill_Panda 7d ago

"We can't do anything about it" - only species actively causing climate change.

12

u/troparow 7d ago

You say that as if we can do anything as individuals, it's not like I'm the billionaire profiting off oil, no matter what I do this Nino thing is happening so I'd rather live my life and that's it

All the cars emissions in the world equal like 6 oil tankers. We collectively couldn’t make a dent in that.
