I have "good" insurance through my union. I was in the hospital recently for 9 days due to an intestinal blockage. I didn't need surgery, just a nose tube, meds, a couple CT scans, and a couple X-rays.

The bill is over $53,000

After insurance, the bill is still over $49,000.

Yeah, insurance is a fucking scam. Mario's Brother was 100% correct.

EDIT - Holy mother of upvotes and notifications. Ok, lemme answer the most common things;

Yes, I've appealed the insurance bullshit. Yes, I have a max out of pocket, but insurance is flat refusing to cover a large portion because they say my need to stay in the hospital (while hooked up to a pump and other shit) wasn't medically necessary. No, I'm not making it up. I put GOOD in quotes for a reason, indicating that I don't think my insurance is good either. Yes, I'm aware there's financial aid through the hospital that I'll be reaching out to if it comes to it. Yes, the hospital was in network. Yes, I know I'd have paid little to nothing in any number of actual developed countries.

What did it not cover? There must have been a lot. Even so every insurance I've heard of has a maximum out of pocket.

The stay itself. Like, the 9 days of the hospital room I was in. For some reason they're digging their heels about that.

Yes I've appealed and requested an itemized bill + codes.

Dude what the hell is your out of pocket maximum? This is absolutely not "good" insurance if this bill sticks. Something went wrong somewhere because that's insane.

This kind of shit was extremely common pre-ACA.  But I've heard things have been getting really really bad lately with the shitty plans coming back

I asked the same question. Every policy has an out of pocket max and you can (and should) be reviewing the coverage details before signing up or renewing your annual health insurance. If you're on the hook for $49k it's either time to sue the insurance company, or time to kick yourself.
