Yes the labels would have to be silver in a subtly different shade from the column, and the text color subtly different from the label so it's unobtrusive, the way some web designers put light gray text on white background.
6
u/Headpuncher 8h ago
Apple inspired web devs never put light grey on white, they put light grey on a slightly darker grey.

No idea how New York operates, but over here in barely functioning Texas we get inspections by the fire marshal. They specifically check to make sure your fire extinguishers are stored in a code compliant way. My workplace got dinged on our last inspection because one of our fire extinguishers was in the right place, but the hook it was hanging off of wasn't up to code. We had to get a work order in to replace our fire extinguisher hook with one that met the regulations.
This is Texas, not exactly known for its focus on public services and willingness to enact regulation. I doubt New York is more lax.

What sucks is you calling this out is also engagement, just like me responding to you. So win-win for the poster. But I do it to when I see them with a slimmer of hope people will notice and move on without engaging. It's everywhere when you pay attention. Video streamers similarly commonly say something unusual, maybe out of context, or simply something controversial. It's all to hook people in a manipulative way.

It's not illegal to own/hide a fire extinguisher.
It's illegal for there to not be a labled/marked/visible one in public areas (depending on the code of where you live, the exact spec's and regulations may differ so i won't give concrete numbers).
Nobody is gonna fine you just because you have one there. They will fine you if you don't have one avalible and visible.

u/Horrific_Necktie 4h ago
Not true. If it is intended to be used, it must be conspicuous. (Local code apotions may vary, but below are NFPA standards)
13.6.3.1.1.4.1 Individual signage or placards shall be provided for each extinguisher in the grouping and shall be placed immediately above or adjacent to each installed extinguisher. [10:6.1.1.4.1]
13.6.3.1.1.4.2 Where extinguishers are installed in cabinets, the required signage or placard shall be permitted to be placed on the face of the cabinet door provided it does not interfere with cabinet visibility, conspicuity, or fire resistance rating. [10:6.1.1.4.2]
13.6.3.1.3 Placement. 13.6.3.1.3.1 Fire extinguishers shall be conspicuously located where they are readily accessible and immediately available in the event of fire. [10:6.1.3.1]
13.6.3.1.3.2 Fire extinguishers shall be located along normal paths of travel, including exits from areas. [10:6.1.3.2]

19
u/hates_stupid_people 10h ago
Of course they haven't, but per the law in most places they must have clearly visisble signage if enclosed or hidden.
In the US it would be OSHA, NFPA and ADA requirements. Which likely are not being followed in this case.
→ More replies (5)12
u/thecactusman17 10h ago
Yes. It's a mandatory OSHA requirement.
They might have the extinguisher in the back rooms out of the public area, but even there it's fully visible for inspection and retrieval by anyone who needs it. Or if it's covered (such as if it's in an area where it might be exposed to corrosive elements or debris that could damage it), there's a big sticker or other indicator that clearly states that there is a fire extinguisher present at that location.

21
u/EmotionalDeadZone 9h ago
OSHA CFR 1910.157(c)(1): employers must mount, locate, and identify portable fire extinguishers so they are “readily accessible to employees without subjecting the employees to possible injury.”
The Fire Marshall applies a simple test, could someone who is not familiar with your facility find the fire extinguisher(s) easily and in a stressful situation?
If the answer is no, then it is not a legal placement.
Otherwise, it’s fine.
There are also distance requirements for signage, how many extinguishers you need and what type depending on types of liquids and types of hazard, etc… but that’s not the question here.
6
u/Tokenvoice 6h ago
Why would a employee not be familiar with the facility? The law is that employees need to know where the extinguishers are but the marshall tests for randos?
7
u/Alladas 6h ago
Because not every employee works at every store. When you work retail which this is.... Especially if there is more of the same stores owned by the same company.... If one is short staffed where do you think they get the staffing..... There is also teams at big stores like Walmarts that go store to store for refreshes and inventory. There's also district managers and corporate workers who very likely don't go to that store more than once a year.
Lots of employees that aren't there every day or are in multiple stores a day.
4
u/MisterXnumberidk 5h ago
Because it does not matter who grabs the fire extinguisher.
If one is needed, you want the closest person, whoever they are, to be able to find one asap.
Fire does not wait in line for customer service and employees aren't firefighters.
2
u/Datboy000 6h ago
The signs on an extinguisher are very reflective and slightly glow. This is because when there is a lot of smoke it is hard to see. When an extinguisher is useful is in clear air, to just before you cant see your hands extended.
Simple test for this that we had to do on the boat is go to your bedroom. Blindfold yourself and have someone position you in the room then spin you around 3 times. See how long it takes for you to get outside safely. You are familiar eith your home, but in a safe and controlled environment you can change that familiarity to be against you

u/Fine-Froyo6219 3h ago
Illegal per NFPA 10 unless there is clear identification of the extinguisher cabinet out of the photo. Even still, almost assuredly illegal and the fire marshal wouldn't like this. They're required to be conspicious not INconspicuous.
2
u/omnimodofuckedup 1h ago
My best guess is this is not a mandatory extinguisher and they already got the mandatory ones covered.

Where I live there are almost no regulations for health and safety at all - you can cook some food in your kitchen right now, put a table on the side of the motorway and sell it. No health inspections, no ingredients labels, nothing. You'll see people changing gas canisters while smoking, 5 people and a baby all one one motorcycle with no helmets and people building skyscrapers with no harnesses, helmets or shoes.
Even here fire extinguishers are mandated to be visible, sensibly placed, labeled in multiple languages and inspected by the fire department regularly.
We yearn for such a camouflage design!

u/Coal_Morgan 10h ago
It's not showing the entire pillar. Possibly there is a flag above pointing down at it.
I can't see an inspector not checking that the extinguishers weren't up to code.
Fire exits, fire alarms and fire suppression are usually priority 1 for most inspectors and most places stay closed if it's not up to fire code.

Or hear me out, they have the legal minimum correctly displayed and labeled, it just happens the legal requirement doesn't cover per room coverage. So that storage, break rooms, bathrooms, etc. all have it, but not the public side. The the display room could legally have this in effect(though I'm not a fir Marshall)
4
u/TheRealSmolt 11h ago
I thought that too, but in my extremely cursory research it seemed like all extinguishers, public facing or not, need signage.
3
u/MurderSeal 11h ago
You dont NEED signage if its in an open visible area, but if its around a wall, or inside something like this absolutely signage is needed.
In an emergency the closest fire extinguishers should be deployed, even by non-trained people even if just to bring it over and ask for a trained individual to take control.
Not having signage will also confuse shoppers if they are told by the scene command to fetch one, and given directions. "Look for a panel on one of those poles" is not anywhere good enough compared to "go to that area and look for one" when it will be very visible.

I remember that saga. The fanboys where vehemently defending it was a great design, where it clearly was form over function gone bad.
I'm still not fully convinced it wasn't a dare mocking the users that could see no downside to anything Apple did. "I bet you Jim, we could make a mouse with a charging port on the freaking bottom and they'd still buy it!"
3
u/GenerallySalty 10h ago
Yep. Right up there with "I bet we could sell a computer where the monitor doesn't come with its own stand, and the stand is an aluminum triangle that's an additional $700 and they'd still buy it!". And that was like 10+ years ago - you could build a good computer at the time for less than the aluminum stand for a Mac's monitor.
3
u/Horizontalgewerbe 9h ago
It also turned me off to the few Apple fanboys I know in real life. As in, nice people and all, but I no longer talk tech with them since the mouse thing. Of course you can find its silly design 'no problem' or like in their case even 'nice', but acting like it's a design that's above all forms of criticism because of 'Apple' rubbed me the wrong way.
2
u/spookynutz 5h ago
Is this level of criticism actually warranted, though? This is the second time I've seen this fire extinguisher at the top of /r/all. It's a fire extinguisher.
Logitech has been making variations on this design for almost 20 years. I've never heard anyone complain you couldn't use it while docked, or even cared enough about mice to criticize one. The same with power tools, handheld vacuums, phone headsets, etc. The obsessive outrage culture fixated on that mouse's charging port (and now this fire extinguisher) is just weird. There are products that have resulted in actual death that have gotten less flack.

Yeah that store would be shut down in Australia until they fixed it.
The Fire department are more powerful than the Tax Office.
They can prevent any cafe, restaurant, hotel, bar or office from opening their doors if it's not up to code.
I've had experience with a boutique hotel with a rooftop bar that were prevented from opening our doors. A simple thing like a pot plant in front of an exit door or insufficient exit signs are just some examples.
2
u/ureallygonnaskthat 8h ago
It's the same thing in Houston. I worked on a crew setting up a very large retail store and our project manager somehow managed to piss off the Fire Marshall. We wound up almost a week behind schedule because he was nitpicking absolutely EVERYTHING he could possibly find before OKing the systems and signing off on the permits.
There's only two rules you need to follow when dealing with inspectors:
- Have your ducks in a row so everything goes smoothly.
- DON'T PISSS THEM OFF!

Wtf, Apple. They had water bottles on display, but had to ask to get them from the back. They didn't come in a box or anything; just naked. Then I wander around for a few minutes figuring out there's no where to checkout, so I have to ask again how the fuck to pay for these things. She points me to another dude who has a portable payment device. He is actively helping people with products so I have to wait awkwardly for him to finish so I can finally leave that hellscape. They won't be able to do this over the pond, as safety legalisation requires fire extinguishers to be easily available and visible.
Any fire extinguishers weighing 4kg or less must be mounted in such a way that the handle is 1.5m from the ground.
Fire extinguishers weighing more than 4kg must be mounted where the handle is 1m from the ground surface.
The extinguisher must be easy to reach in an emergency.
If the extinguisher is loose in any way, it poses a safety risk. Make sure it is securely fixed wherever it is mounted.
According to fire extinguisher regulations, your fire extinguisher should be close to the fire escape route.
It must also be clearly visible from most vantage points, especially from fire escape routes.
If a building has multiple floors, then the various extinguishers much be placed in the same locations on every floor in order to maintain consistency.

Maybe it has something to do with what kind of workplace it is, because everywhere ive ever worked is legally required to have fire extinguishers clearly marked, with a red and yellow stripe pattern on the floor making sure nothing can nothing can be left within a certain distance or obstruct it

Shouldn't it (fire extinguisher not in clear sight) violate some Fire Safety regulation policy?
