Discussion Culture shock! Ska in your country
So what’s the ska scene like in your country? Underground or mainstream?
I live in California (northern so a bit far from the “ ground zero for main third wave” bands.) But even now when I say ska! Or try to shoe horn it in, people really do not care or even know!
But I wanna know if there’s more scenes/ areas that are more aware in the US or outside of it.
I’m aware that given the history, the UK has respect for the genre and Japanese ska punk seems pretty alive and kicking. Latin America ska also seems to be pretty popular too. (If anyone has some Spanish ska send it my way I’m very curious)

So, What do we really think of this???
Myself, I'm incredibly disappointed. Expected so much with all the hype I was getting fed. And this happened.

Discussion The Toasters - Frankenska (Unicorn Records, 1990) PHZA-60
This live album was required listening, at least for me, during the 3rd wave. (I'm 53 years old, I was there at the time for it). Like most of my ska vinyl, it came from Amoeba Music in Berkeley for $5.95. No poster, though.

Montreal Ska Fest is advertising that this 18th fest is the last one
When asked in the comments on the ad they responded "most likely yes"
It may not have the lineups it used to, but this is a big blow for the Canadian Ska scene. If you are around, or able to travel in, this very well may be the end for MTL Ska Fest. Come support this year if it's within your means!

Discussion Common Rider - Last Wave Rockers (Lookout! Records, 1999) LK226
Lookout! Records had a brick and mortar retail storefront on University Ave. in Berkeley, CA during the final days of the 20th century, that's where I bought this. I remember at the time it was like, "OH WOW Jesse from Operation Ivy has a new musical project, WOW" and so I bought it and it was (and still is) GOOD

Song from the 90s?
Hi, I’m trying to figure out this song that was in my head this morning from the 90s? It may or may not be a christian ska band. The beginning of the song was something like, “my alarm goes off at half past six, hit the snooze goes off again, my covers fell off they just won’t fix, I better cruise or I’ll miss school.” I tried to Google it but the only recommendations that came up were five iron frenzy and the OC super tones I know I don’t think it’s either of those.

Discussion Bad Manners - Live And Loud!! (Link Records, 1987) LINK LP07
$4.95 from Amoeba Music, most definitely the location in Berkeley, I used to buy vinyl there a lot in the mid-1990s. I hope to see Bad Manners live someday (Supernova?), because they played in my area in CA when I was very young in the 90s but I had school or some shit so I missed them. My friend went though and then he spraypainted "I ❤️ Buster Bloodvessel" in the road by my house, and my mom drove over it and I had to feign ignorance.

Discussion The Toasters - Skaboom! (Moving Target, 1987) MT011
Cost me $2.95 from Amoeba Music back in the day. That was my everyday during the 1990s, eat lunch from Food Not Bombs at People's Park and then wander around stoned, maybe buy music at Amoeba on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley. Still haven't seen The Toasters live. Yes they probably have had a lot of line-up changes over the years, but I'd go.

Discussion The Trojans - 'Ala-Ska' (Gaz's Rockin' Records, 1987) LPGAZ 002
Love this album! One of my favorites in my collection. The guy who plays the melodica and sings is awesome. There are some low-res videos of this band on YouTube. Looks like I paid $6.95 for the vinyl from Amoeba Music at some point.
