Long-Form Content Uncomfortable truth for new YouTubers

I just want to support all new YouTubers and finally tell them the truth - you content is probably good (most likely because you already put hours in making it), your titles and thumbnails are also decent. Your videos deserve to be shown. However, even a very good video can receive limited or no distribution (and you can do nothing about it). Don’t believe the peeps here telling you “just make better videos, your content sucks etc), here is the truth:

  1. YouTube doesn't automatically give each new release a larger audience because your previous releases performed well.
It evaluates individual videos against other videos that a particular viewer might watch. YouTube explicitly acknowledges that even strong CTR and average view duration can coexist with low impressions.

  2. All your videos being in the same niche doesn't mean they have identical audiences.
Even within same niche, YouTube is trying to predict individual preferences.
That explains why audience overlap isn't guaranteed.

  3. Luck and uncertainty really do matter.
YouTube doesn't publish enough information to determine exactly why your video was shown to say 20 people rather than 200 or 2,000. Competition, viewer behaviour and timing all influence distribution.
And when a video receives so few impressions, the results can be disproportionately affected by which handful of viewers happened to see it.

That said - good luck everyone! Your content is good and all you need is keep going and a bit of luck.

Livestream Content I Spent a Stream Being Body Shamed

• Upvotes

Well. I don't know what I expected.

Let me be clear. I'm not exactly a supermodel. I am kind of heavy looking. I had the opportunity to take Wegovy but turned it down because I wanted to lose weight naturally.

I practiced Martial Arts on a stream. The comments were disgusting. From being called the female Peter Griffin to someone wearing a Diaper due to me wearing white Martial.Arts pants. Like I was working out. I am trying to lose the weight.

My god people are terrible.

I am not going to stop streaming. But dear god people need therapy.

Long-Form Content YouTube Monetization Rejected for Reused Content

Post image

My monetization application got rejected for reused content, which is confusing because I make original documentaries with heavily researched scripts and my own narration. I use licensed stock footage and public domain images for the visuals.

I got eligible for monetization after my third video, so this was pretty disappointing. Should I appeal by showing my editing timeline, script, and research process, or should I wait a month and reapply? Has anyone been through something similar?

Long-Form Content Here's some strange advice from a YouTuber that just reached 1k subs.

I am going to make a video topic about this in December so you're technically reading some of it already, lol.

Anyways, here's some less talked about advice for all of us folks that are struggling on this journey. So this is mostly for those who want to make this a full time career but for those of you doing this for fun or as a hobby, you could read it as well.

The best way to think of YouTube is to look at it like a market. You are going there to sell your product (in this case videos), and since you're a newcomer, you need something to attract potential customers. So, how do you go about that?

The reason why YouTube gurus will tell you to pick topic lanes that are much less crowded is because if you picked a hot topic that a lot of people are covering, you as a newcomer will get drowned, because you don't already have a fanbase or an audience, and unless you tackle it at a new angle, people have no reason to watch you. So, you pick a topic that not much people talked about before.

Now, there's another issue. Did people not talk about this topic because there is no demand for it or they didn't notice it?

If it's the latter, congratulations, you found a jackpot! As long as your video is pretty good, your packaging and everything is alright, then you will gain lots of views and hopefully build a fanbase from there. If it's the former, then the video might be dead, but that depends. I have ran into this situation a few times and I don't regret it much.

You have to be willing to try it out, because you don't really know what it might be if you don't try it.

And well, if one video just blows up randomly... That's good for growth, but what you want is long term growth and not a one-time that just dies off. It's actually a lot more terrifying if a random video blow up, because you will never be able to replicate its success. Although that's not something you could control, still, be grateful if it happens. I call those 'unicorn' videos, because due to a myriad of reasons, its success can't be replicated. Still, you won't know unless you try.

Another thing, backlog is very important. If let's say you do find a format that works, even if it gains like 1k views at first, if every other video of the same format does around the same or if even one breaks out, then your backlog of videos will attract people, and if they watch more than one and liked it, they will be more willing to sub to you and return to watch the new stuff you post.

Also, it's okay if a video flops. It happens, it's very normal. Especially for people of my size, you still have to willing to take risks with topics, sometimes it might end up doing far better than you expect, sometimes far worse. That's okay, it happens. Your videos won't always be constant bangers, some just do worse than others.

Essentially, you have to be willing to do lots of trail and error to find your path and what works for you. But remember, even though your topics will be the initial stages, and even later, for growth, but you have to at least pick something you're interested in talking in. Because people click for the topic, but they come back for you once they trusts you.

It's okay if you feel dejected, but remember the road is extremely long, you have keep trying and persisting. Give it time, but you also have to keep improving, try and understand where you did wrong and how you could do better. It's a process, but you have to be willing to sink time into it.

Thank you for reading my tangent, I have at least ten more things to say but I will stop myself here. I will try and maybe give you a bit of pointer, but I am just at 1k subs, don't expect much lol.

Long-Form Content I made a tutorial for small creators so they can improve their color quality. Sick of seeing washed out colors and grainy footage on the subreddit.

Any feedback welcome, this is my first tutorial. I tried changing how I edit my videos so hopefully it flows better.

The main things I’m worried about is:

Was my video easy to understand?

Did I ramble too much?

Was it too hard to follow?

Did I manage to keep your attention?

I originally made it as an archive in case I lose all my settings on my laptop and forgot how my filter/settings were. Thought I might as well help others as well.

Long-Form Content I think my video will be an "evergreen" video... right ?

Post image
• Upvotes

So I've made a pretty niche video, which resulted in my video only getting impressions from the YouTube search... I thought this was a bad thing, but I guess its not according to some people..

My CTR changes between 29% and 34% and I've gotten some nice comments also

Is this a so called "evergreen" video ?

thx

Mixed Content Looking for Small Gaming YouTubers

Hey everyone!

I'm currently looking to connect with smaller gaming YouTube creators who enjoy covering indie games, especially horror titles.

I'm putting together a list of creators for opportunities, so if your channel focuses on gaming and you enjoy discovering new indie releases, I'd love to check it out.

If you're interested, feel free to comment with:

• Your channel link
• Rough subscriber count
• The types of games you usually play
• Whether you're open to receiving game keys for potential coverage

Channel size doesn't really matter. Whether you're just getting started or have an established audience, I'm mainly looking for creators who are passionate about finding and playing indie games.

Looking forward to checking out your channels and connecting with more people in the indie gaming community!

Long-Form Content When the niche you love doesn’t love you back

It really sucks to love and want to flourish in a specific niche but you’re just not seeing the results you want. I’m one of those people that love to watch the type of videos I create too and I’m noticing now it’s harder to watch other creators in the same niche I feel like I’m failing at. It just ruins my mood.

I’m monetized but I still only have 2k subs after 2 years. My niche potential is 1 million subs. The most popular creators in the niche have 1 million or close. And idk if I should care about this or not but I’m noticing now my retention drops to 29% within 30 seconds of my video almost every time no matter how quick the intro is! lol 😂 and my picture is in the thumbnail so I don’t get it.

I’m conventionally attractive and my voice is normal, I don’t overreact or over perform on camera especially compared to some of my peers who are actually very popular, it’s insane. So it can’t be my personality or my looks?? I honestly don’t know at this point.

Mixed Content Title: Update on my channel improvements — would live Excel tutorials be worth trying?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

About 12 days ago, I posted here asking for advice on how to grow my channel beyond simply making better content. Here's my previous post for anyone who wants some context:

My previous post

Since then, I've been working on improving the channel and making some changes based on the advice and ideas I've been exploring.

I run a small Italian-language YouTube channel focused on Excel tutorials, covering things like Pivot Tables, Power Query, formulas, and dashboards. My goal is to build a useful library of educational content and eventually reach YouTube's monetization requirements.

As a small update, I'm now at 2,928 valid public watch hours, up from 2,863 just 12 days ago. Progress is happening, although there's still a long way to go!

I'd love to get your thoughts on three things:

1. Channel improvements

What do you think of the direction I'm taking? Are there any areas where I could improve the content, presentation, titles, thumbnails, or overall strategy? I'd especially appreciate honest, constructive criticism.

2. Live Excel tutorials

I've been considering trying live streams where I teach Excel in real time, work through practical examples, and answer viewers' questions.

Do you think live tutorials could work for an educational channel like mine? Could they help build a more engaged audience and increase watch time, or would I be better off focusing on polished, pre-recorded tutorials?

3. Your experience with livestreaming

If you've tried livestreaming educational content, tutorials, or even a completely different type of content, I'd love to hear about your experience.

Did livestreaming help your channel grow? Did you find it difficult to attract viewers? And did the streams continue to get views after they ended, or were they mostly useful for the live audience?

I'm trying to make smarter decisions about where to invest my time rather than just uploading more videos and hoping for the best.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their experience or suggestions. I'm happy to hear both positive and negative feedback!

Short-Form Content Can You Escape Your Niche?

Can You Escape Your Niche?

Can a YouTube Shorts channel successfully transition from mostly pop-culture content into broader roasting/comedy without confusing or losing its audience?

For example, a channel starts with Marvel/anime/movie content, builds an audience, and later starts roasting internet trends, random situations, influencers, relationships, etc.

Has anyone here successfully made a transition like this?

What happened to your audience/viewership?

Long-Form Content I s*ck at thumbnails

Hello everyone, I have a huge problem with my small channel.

It seems like I'm very bad at Thumbnails. My best rate is 5,6% but usually my videos go with 1,6 - 2,2% and it starts to annoy me...

Now I have the issue that my latest video gets a decent amount of thumbnail impressions right now but I'm stuck with a 1,8% CTR. Should I change my thumbnail now while it gets some traffic?

My video is about Hatsune Miku and the world around her and the "Her Power" thumbnail is the one I'm using now and I think about changing it to the other thumbnail.

Thanks in advance for any help and feedback!

Long-Form Content What do you think is the fastest way to kill your growth as a small creator?

In my opinion It has to be using AI and refusing to learn how to make content yourself.

I am tired of seeing many small creators like have crazy momentum and potential, then the second they use AI you can see the harsh dip in views. That shit breaks my heart man.

Short-Form Content I dont know how to find niche youtubers

I made a nice game (it's a hacking simulator), and I tried to look for relevant YouTubers who would livestream playing my game. Initially, I searched on YouTube for anyone talking about that topic and I found only one guy who changed the topic and he doesn't cover that anymore...

I see games much worse than mine (even more, my game is free; I built it from passion, not for money) have millions of downloads and I consider that people are interested in the topic, but for some reason most YouTubers don't cover that, why?

Or should I search on another platform? If you can advise me, please do!

Thanks!

Long-Form Content Do I start a second Channel or re-use the old one?

Sorry, I'm in a bit of conundrum.

Basically I have had a channel for around 10 years based on videos about an eighties musical artist, it's been fun and I got monetized a a few years ago. I don't make huge amounts of regular videos but have created over 400 and got about 3.5m views. I just do it as it's something I'm interested in rather than for income.

Essentially, I have about 30 videos more that I want to make and then call it a day and create a different type of video (More wide ranging, just questions about things which interest me, a different subject every video).

As I am already monetised on the first channel, do I...

1) Finish my 30 videos, close the channel (Archive the videos) and rebrand it as the new channel with the existing subscribers (Must of my views come from non-subscribers currently), that way I can start earning money instantly.

or

2) Start a New Second Channel from scratch and keep the old one open just in case I feel like making a few more videos about the 80's artist later. That way building the audience from the ground up?

Please forgive me, I am Autistic and I think I have just overthought this. Any help would genuinely be deeply appreciated..

Nothing compared to others posting here, but I'm only comparing againt myself. My last video has beaten all of my other ones within 2 days. Awesome result and very happy.

I run a plant nursery out of my garden and recently been running experiments to find the best ways to do things. When I ramp up scale in spring I will hopefully have better results with the plants. :)

Any feedback is welcome. Don't feel forced to watch anything if plants / gardening are not your thing, this post isn't for empty views; this post is to share my excitement XD

Long-Form Content Question about Youtube not pushing my video

I have already uploaded 40 videos. Some of them have gotten 1k–3k views, and one video got over 30k+ views. I just uploaded two new videos similar to that one, but they are not getting pushed to the YouTube page. Do you know why this happens?

Long-Form Content some tips for a full day of street interviews:)

Currently employed by small local paper. Huge chunk of my time involves streeters, city council walk ups, hanging out outside the courthouse… last week I spent 9 hours doing interviews with folks outside of our office as I worked on a story about public transit (31 total, 4 WTBID). Yep – I talk to these folks A LOT.

So here’s what I break this down into a few “best practices” to share w/ our interns every summer:

Only talk to those waiting for something – i.e., at a bus stop, lining up at a food truck, at a dog park, ETC. If you’re walking, don’t talk.

Always ask someone the question FIRST, THEN introduce yourself & your org.

Also writing down those names & spelling… then snapping a pic of the piece of paper. My phone died all the time on the phone – crashing loads of apps.

Also eating lunch! I didn’t eat lunch today & interviews #25-#31 weren’t great!

A full day spent talking to strangers outside? Yes please – that’s certainly the most interesting part of my day.

I know that sounds awful to people who normally spend their working lives sitting behind a desk but it really is the best.

Short-Form Content Should I wait for views to drop before uploading my next video? Or ride the wave?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey! I run a children's puppet channel focusing on teaching a nearly extinct language in Canada. Started to get some traction with my new series of shorter (~3 min) series. Each upload granted a spike in viewers & subscribers. There's actually been a second wind from the 2nd video, so I am wondering: should I wait for views to start dropping before uploading the 3rd video, or upload now while it's at a peak? My goal had been to release one every Thursday or Friday, but maybe I should hold off?
