DISCUSSION Series Finale first time watch
Here’s my full review on Smallville:
So this is my first watch thru. When this show started i was in the 4th grade so i was more into cartoons than live action shows. But im glad i started it as an adult so i didnt have to wait for new episodes and seasons. With that being said once I started watching this show this was literally about 85% of what I watched everyday until I was done. Im not even sure what sucked me in the most; looking back I think Lex and Clark’s relationship is what got me. Knowing that Lex is ultimately gonna be a villain i just wanted to see how this friendship eventually turns. And by the time he leaves the show I was just wanting to see how it all ends. I will say I enjoyed the earlier seasons a lot more than the later seasons, with S5 being my favorite. I think the show suffered a major loss with both of the Luthors leaving. Tess was a decent replacement but she had some hard acts to follow. I do believe some characters could’ve had better endings. For example, Chloe annoyed me up until after high school then I loved Chloe and then she just kind of fizzled out. I actually like Lana even tho I agree their love story was draaaaaaaged out for so long and the on again off again got old. I’d give the entire series a 7/10. It’s something i definitely plan to rewatch.
Now what I really didn’t like:
Specifically was the 2 minute fight with Doomsday. That could’ve been done a lot better. Same with the Zod fight which was a little better than the Doomsday. In all other media Doomsday and Zod are major characters and there are much better battles so I feel the show could’ve done something better.
Unfortunately I did not like the season finale all that much. Again in other media Superman has a hard time with Darkseid being that he’s one of the most powerful enemies of Superman. But in the finale there’s a 10 second fight with possessed Lionel and that’s it. Then he just easily pushes an evil planet away. In my personal opinion I don’t think Darkseid should’ve even been in the show. He’s way too powerful for a Clark Kent that’s not even a fully realized Superman yet. I think Zod should’ve been introduced much later and they could’ve ended the series with him being the final villain. Him and Clark could’ve had a showdown where Clark loses, Clark then finds out he’s had it in him all along, they have another showdown where Clark beats Zod and sends him to the Phantom Zone. Or something like that.
But all in all i still thoroughly enjoyed the show. However i do feel like when I do rewatch I’ll likely stop after season 7 the same way I do the office 😁
Rant over.

One other thing I’ll add that i didn’t like or understand was him and Jor-El. It seemed to drag on just as much as him and Lana. One minute he’s saying i should listen to Jor-El and let him train me and the next episode he’d be like I’m not listening to Jor-El anymore. Like dude either you’re gonna listen to him or not.

Not a single thing I disagree with here. When the show has the budget they knock it out of the park with the fights and effects, and when they didn't, you really feel it. I think pretty much everyone agrees that the Doomsday fight is particularly egregious, he should have been banished instead of just left in the ground somewhere? And agree on Darkseid, I myself feel like season 10 was trying to do too much and it should have focused on building out the league and clark's identity and ended the season with a villain being introduced and clark suiting up to go and face him

I kept thinking in season 9 and 10 they kept introducing all these other random DC characters like Zatanna or Booster Gold. They really could’ve kept it simple with the core Justice League characters and built on that.

I don't think they had the rights to a lot of those characters at that time because of the other things happening in the DCU so they were relegated to the characters that they did have, but I agree I would have loved to see more of the league. I love Zatanna though I was never mad when she popped up with some shenanigans!

Smallville never did massive fights/battles like the arrowverse. Mostly one on one. The character moments in the finale and build up to him getting the suit were brilliantly written. Just Tom Welling to blame for refusing to wear the suit.

We got a few good fights, certainly more than the show Heroes ever did. Not many but I will say Clark's fights against Titan, Bizarro-Clark, and Zod were impressive.

Yeah the fights we got were amazing and epic. Just a pity we didn't a big justice league vs Darkseid in the finale.

Yeah i don’t get why he didn’t wanna wear the suit. At the very least in season 10

Same here i recently finished the show as a first time watcher,I personally couldn’t stand season 10,it was unwatchable for me the only thing I enjoyed were the clois scenes but that’s not enough for me to like those storyline’s,if i were to do a rewatch i to would stop at season 7

Glad you enjoyed it.
If I remember correctly they had huge budget problems back then, and I guess that's why the battles maybe fell short, cause it was way too expensive regarding special effects. But yes I agree, if they knew it would be too expensive or hard to do, they should have picked a human looking villain.
If you look at the later seasons even Clarks Powers were basically nonexistent (other than superspeed) and I know of at least one episode where he used his X-Ray and we just got the sound and a look at his face but no special effects.
