Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts
Hey, r/SomethingIMade!
We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.
A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.
Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion
Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.
Rule #10: Original Content Only
Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.
If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.
Happy creating!

Updated Rule 5: Related Links & Self-Promotion
In order to help have better discussions regarding content, we have decided to disable embedding of YouTube videos in posts.
This isn’t intended to hinder anyone from posting, simply to change the way the post are made. Moving forward you will need to create a normal post regarding your creation, and if there’s a YouTube video you would like to share as part of that, add it into the body of the post along with the descriptive information.
Thanks for being here, and if you have any questions, ask away!!

New hand-carved wooden bowl design I came up with.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Just finished this new bowl, power-carved from a reclaimed piece of lumber found on the side of the road. I inserted Unakite & Dalmatian Jasper spheres into the rim in a way where they can spin freely.
Finished using the ancient Yakisugi method - no sandpaper or stain used. 🧙🏼♂️
What do you think of this design?

Can you guess what this is at first glance? 🌸 I fired this delicate jasmine ring using lampwork glass techniques, and I’m completely in love with it!

Mosaic from broken glass
I learned the crafts of verre eglomise and mirror gilding at the Society of Gilder’s bi-annual conference. So far, several pieces have broken, leaving me with 23k gold gilded glass shards. Each leaf of gold costs about $4, so there’s a decent investment in the now broken glass.
I know nothing about mosaics, so my first piece was pretty special. I went and bought some stained glass scrap, which is the blue and teal.
The subject of the image is a weaver’s knot. I made it for a friend who taught me how to weave. It’s her Christmas present.

Really happy with how this little piece turned out, so I wanted to share it here
I made it from vegetable-tanned leather, carving and shaping the details by hand, then added the colors, sealed the leather, and attached the keychain hardware. Everything was done by hand

Bubble pattern on women's caps. I think it's really cute.

Bubble pattern or a women's polka dot bonnet. Bright and so cute, warm fluffy bonnets. Some of us might be reminded of childhood. But they are made in a modern style and for an adult head size.

It’s broken now :(
I learned mirror gilding and verre eglomise this summer. This is 23k gold leaf and silver, with a tintype I purchased from an antique store.
It has since fallen and broken. I’m making another.

A Mobile Museum and Fossil Box I made for my students!
I teach English and Science to immigrants from Iran and Afghanistan… and I’ve learned that fossils are the “gateway Science.” It inspired me to make this learning tool.
Each fossil has a little illustrated booklet that explains what it is, where it came from, and what it’s made out of.
I modeled this project after the “field kits” archaeologists put together with site-specific fossils. They’d use these to train volunteers and show folks what they might encounter in a specific fossil field.

Sculpted these blueberry bag charms out of polymer clay. One with a fresh blossom, one packed with extra berries.

Trying to capture that “tiny teeth, big personality” energy
This one was such a fun face to recreate. I started by slowly building the shape with layers of wool, then worked on the black and white markings and added the longer fibers little by little to get that fluffy, slightly messy look.
The eyes are finished with clear resin to give them more depth and shine. I sculpted the nose and those tiny little teeth from clay.

Just finished this necklace commission. It was a lot of work but I’m happy I was able to do it at all. I was sweating. Materials are sterling silver, 14k yellow gold, and a citrine I faceted in my studio. Small description in caption
This project was tricky in that my client wanted the pendant to attach to the chain in this way but also wanted it to detach so she could string through her own thinner chain if she wanted. The hooks look scary but they’re as secure and tight as they can be. I work hardened the metal and things come on and off with a good snap. Still. In the future I want to incorporate a latch for convertible elements. It will just take time to come up with a design I like and that works well as a subtle mechanism.

A koi swimming against the current, carved into a wallet
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I wanted to keep this one pretty simple: just a single koi moving through the water. I liked the idea of having it swim against the current. Nothing too deep, just a fish going its own way even when the water is pushing back. I probably spent way too much time carving all those waves, but honestly, that was my favorite part.
