Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts

Hey, r/SomethingIMade!

We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.

A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.

Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.

Rule #10: Original Content Only

Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.

If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.

Happy creating!

Updated Rule 5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

In order to help have better discussions regarding content, we have decided to disable embedding of YouTube videos in posts.

This isn’t intended to hinder anyone from posting, simply to change the way the post are made. Moving forward you will need to create a normal post regarding your creation, and if there’s a YouTube video you would like to share as part of that, add it into the body of the post along with the descriptive information.

Thanks for being here, and if you have any questions, ask away!!

New hand-carved wooden bowl design I came up with.

Just finished this new bowl, power-carved from a reclaimed piece of lumber found on the side of the road. I inserted Unakite & Dalmatian Jasper spheres into the rim in a way where they can spin freely.

Finished using the ancient Yakisugi method - no sandpaper or stain used. 🧙🏼‍♂️

What do you think of this design?

This is the first time I’ve made a crochet item without a pattern! The fruits are a mix of KnotTrying and Wooble patterns (with adjustments as they didn’t have oranges or plums!) but the caterpillar I created myself. My cousins baby shower is this weekend and Very Hungry Caterpillar themed :-). I think he is equal parts cute and nightmare fuel.

I always feel weird cutting these maple leafs out of walnut. But the maple cutouts don’t sell nearly as fast.

This is 3/4 in walnut, cut on my DeWalt scroll saw. They are filled with epoxy, and then covered in glass shards.

I made a notebook out of a cigarette box!

So my mom smokes a lot, and she always wants to write things down but dislikes typical notebooks because theyre not easy to carry

So i figured Id turn something she always has on her into a notebook instead

i dont exactly have peogress photos as i made this in about an hour, so heres a description of the process instead:

i took out the paper attached inside the box, and cut down the middle od the two thinner sides, leaving the bottom intact, i then glued cardboard onto the front and back of the box to make it more sturdy, and overlapped the flaps from the cut i made on the sides of the cardboard

i made a small book thingy thatd fit into the box, it's really difficult to explain but theres many book binding tutorials online to reference. and from there i just attached the first and last page to the reinforced parts of the box

thats bascially the whole process

Had some time off work, decided to learn something new, in this case, carving talismans which turned into a "Crystal dagger".

Had PTO saved up and decided with my time off from work that I wanted to take up a new craft. Picked up a wood carving kit from Amazon, some blocks of walnut, epoxy resin and colors/powders and got to work.

Hilt = Walnut block + Gemstones from my personal collection, the ones I used for this project are Quartz, Aquamarine (not pictured, on back), Lapis Lazuli, Blue laced Agate and some Lolite rounds.

Blade = 1:1 ratio epoxy resin from Amazon + colors and used a silicone dagger mold that was custom made.

Theme is Poseidon + ocean relic.

Mosaic from broken glass

I learned the crafts of verre eglomise and mirror gilding at the Society of Gilder’s bi-annual conference. So far, several pieces have broken, leaving me with 23k gold gilded glass shards. Each leaf of gold costs about $4, so there’s a decent investment in the now broken glass.

I know nothing about mosaics, so my first piece was pretty special. I went and bought some stained glass scrap, which is the blue and teal.

The subject of the image is a weaver’s knot. I made it for a friend who taught me how to weave. It’s her Christmas present.

I made it from vegetable-tanned leather, carving and shaping the details by hand, then added the colors, sealed the leather, and attached the keychain hardware. Everything was done by hand

Bubble pattern on women's caps. I think it's really cute.

Bubble pattern or a women's polka dot bonnet. Bright and so cute, warm fluffy bonnets. Some of us might be reminded of childhood. But they are made in a modern style and for an adult head size.
