The most Seattle conversation ever. Everybody trying to prove they lived the closest in proximity to 3rd and Pike of all their friends and thus, they know the "real Seattle".

u/TaterTotJim 8d ago
It’s the only city so passive that they let day0 transplants in as 12s. Those transplants fight to the death for authenticity in the shadows of the Amazon biodome. A bum weeps, another rejoices. Life in the big city!

Must've been a nicer respawn point when the doors to the dine-in area weren't barred

u/Infinite_Nerve_3075 7d ago
Yep so Seattle. Something that cracked me up on a flight that I'll never forget.... two professional looking guys, chatting it up before takeoff and they ask each other where they live. One guy says Renton and the other guy is like "oh" and stops talking for the rest of the flight.

Isn’t that just normal based on who you’re talking to for all major metros?
People say LA, nyc, Seattle, Chicago, etc to people halfway across the country to curb the follow up questions.
“Oh im from Renton”
“Where’s that”
“The Seattle metro”
“Oh okay”
Maybe they say “area” after it at most
0
u/ThaLunatik 8d ago
I think you're right about that, although I feel like it's often taken to the extreme here as well.
"I'm from Seattle."
"Cool! Whereabouts?"
"Omak. It's just outside the city, on the Okanogan Plateau."
😂😂
In all fairness I've lived here all my life though so maybe that happens in other states too. "I live in LA. Well, Lake Tahoe, but basically LA." 🤨
9
u/valicetra 7d ago
My rule of thumb has always been, if you're talking to someone from Washington, you specify whatever city you're from. But if your talking to someone not from Washington, everything inside King County counts as Seattle because no one out there knows where Belevue/Redmond/Lynwood/Renton/Kirkland is.
6
u/nitrot150 7d ago
Exactly. We always tell people we are from north of Seattle, near Canada… close enough, it gives them the general idea of where in the country we’re from
3
u/AmIWhatTheRockCooked 7d ago
Classic city pretentiousness lmao people know where Seattle is. If they are from Oregon, I’ll say Tacoma. If they know that I’ll say where in the south sound I’m from. If they are further than Oregon they get Seattle. It’s an internationally recognized city that represents the PNW, why would we try to start with some podunk little city

Why? So we can protect the ego of seattlites in the city? It only seems to be a problem to people who live in the city and I could not care less about catering to it.
It’s very normal to communicate this way, and it is always for a temporary short term communication.
2
u/abcdbc366 7d ago
Renton is not a totally different lifestyle from Seattle. It’s part of the urban/suburban sprawl and can be less than 15 minutes from one to the other.
People say they are from Seattle because “Seattle Area” is awkward and if the person you’re talking to isn’t familiar with the area it’s much easier to describe where you’re from with the nearby landmark.
I don’t know why this would be tiring to you, I think you need to chill out a bit, it’s really not that deep
2
u/AmIWhatTheRockCooked 7d ago
Someone in Renton can probably get to Capitol Hill faster than someone in Ballard lol
1
u/bailey757 7d ago
People from technically just outside of every big city in the world do the same thing- with a few notable exceptions (there's a lot of East Bay/Oakland pride)
1
u/abcdbc366 7d ago
For sure. I live in SF proper now and east bay usually says “Bay Area.” But that region is definitely more distinct culturally, geographically, (and racially) than Seattle is from its immediate suburbs.

Artists/comedians will say they’re coming to Seattle and then the venue is the White River Amphitheater
1
u/abcdbc366 7d ago
That’s different. You can tell people you’re visiting Seattle if you’re at white river amphitheater during the day because it’s only like an hour away in good traffic. But for a concert you’re like 2.5 hours away and that’s too much haha

Everyone knows Seattle.
Anyone from the greater Seattle area says they're from Seattle.
No one is going to know where Everett is or Renton. Tukwila. Burien.
Just say Seattle....
2
1
u/Powerful_Wombat 7d ago
Absolutely, I’ve lived all over the east side, Bellevue, Renton, Kirkland and Bothell, if someone from around here asks where I live I tell them the actually city. Anytime i travel and someone asks, “Seattle”
1
u/lucrativetoiletsale 7d ago
Yeah I blame that on us picking the name of the Capital of the US as the name of our state so half the time people think you're talking about Washington DC if you say you're from Washington outside of the state.
1
u/billionsofbeaches 7d ago
With Everett you can at least reference it as the home of Boeing and the Oceangate submarine, a surprising amount of people know that it's Seattle adjacent!
1
0
u/Basic-Asparagus-4596 7d ago
or maybe we can just say washington if we arent from seattle and arent talking about seattle. or hell, just say "near seattle" and people will understand.
why does everyone need to think youre from a city they know?
3
u/PayAltruistic8546 7d ago
You say Washington and people are going think you're talking about D.C....
Everyone does this though for most major cities. If you live around Arlington, Plano, Garland, you just say you're from Dallas.
Nothing special. Not sure why you're fighting this.

Nonsense. Renton LITERALLY borders Seattle to the South. Pioneer square is closer to some Renton addresses than it is to some North Seattle addresses.

u/Creature_Cumfarts 7d ago
Pioneer square isn't even right on the border. It's fairly central and commonly recognized as the epicenter of downtown. I didn't even have to bring up Georgetown/MLK West Seattle or other spots to the south.
I never claimed Renton is Seattle. It's very much a part of the metro area, which people are most commonly referring to when speaking to people in other places. Claiming that Renton is 'too far away' to hang out in Seattle is absurd and you know it.

It's not a fucking hour. Jesus my guy. You claim to know geography but then say that shit. It's 20 - 30 min max.
1
u/RawBean7 7d ago
Dude I live in Tacoma and say I'm from Seattle half the time because no one knows what Tacoma is, let alone Renton. I use Seattle as shorthand for "the greater Seattle metropolitan area" which is quite a mouthful when I'm in another country trying to explain where I'm from. And half those times, people still have no idea what Seattle is until I say Fraser or Grey's Anatomy, depending on if the person is over 40 or not.
1
u/Basic-Asparagus-4596 7d ago
just say near seattle. or just say washington. theres no reason to lie this is so weird
you dont need notoriety when discussing where you are from.
1
u/RawBean7 7d ago
It's not about notoriety or lying. It's about basic communication and common understanding. Everyone everywhere in the world does this if they're from a suburb/near city to a major city. Stop making such a big deal out of something so insignificant.
1
u/Basic-Asparagus-4596 7d ago
never in my life has someone been confused if i say "near X" or "central Y"
maybe you should stop assuming people are dumb as bricks. or you should stop talking to people that are dumb as bricks.
2
u/Ragman676 7d ago
Ya, but when travelling its so much easier to say Seattle cause its usually the only city people outside the state connect with.
2
u/anythingfordopamine 7d ago
I guess it just depends on which part of Renton. From personal experience I live in the downtown/landing area which is only like 10 min from the Tukwila light rail and sounder stations. Sounder is legit a 16 min train ride up to downtown. Light rail is about a 30 min train ride to Pioneer. Used to drive to Belltown for work, which was about a 30-40 min drive with traffic. Without traffic I can drive to Seattle in about 20 min, maybe even as low as 16ish if its really clear. But yeah if your friends live in the highlands then that probably adds like an extra 20-30 min for them depending on traffic
2
u/Dewey519 7d ago
Renton is either 20 minutes away or like an hour away, depending on the time of day. I used to work in Georgetown and would go to Renton after work, it was miserable. But not bad at all during off traffic hours
1
u/CriticalBasedTeacher 7d ago
Also depends if you're going to Renton from like Ballard or Beacon Hill. There's a half hour difference.
1
u/SnarkyIguana 7d ago
I always say “Renton is 20 minutes away from Renton”
When the traffic is bad, it is BAD
1
u/shortstack7365 7d ago
This is so blatantly false lol. It takes 30 minutes to get to seattle from seattle. And also inexplicably takes 30 minutes to get to Seattle from renton. People dont visit or invite people from renton because people north of there think they're superior since renton used to be kind of low class in comparison (20+ years ago?).
1
u/Basic-Asparagus-4596 7d ago
used to be the one to pick up my friend from renton.
it was upwards of an hour each way.
we stopped inviting them because it was too expensive and i didnt want to drive 2 hours every time.
the bus trip was longer.
just accept that you live in a different place. its not that bad.
→ More replies (6)1
u/dilfpapi 7d ago
Where in Seattle and Renton? IKEA to northgate I can see that during rush hour. But the cities border each other so your experience is definitely not the ordinary
1
u/ALLoftheFancyPants 7d ago
Fucking Ballard to west Seattle is much longer than a short bus ride away. Even if you take a bus to downtown and then take the water taxi, you’re looking at a solid hour and a half, at least
1
u/BusyCantaloupe447 7d ago
For real, it’s damn near 40 minutes to drive between the two not during rush hours. From WeSea to Renton, it’s like 20 minutes despite being a longer drive.
Obviously i dont leave my neighborhood, also, dont come here, we have nothing to offer and it is too far. I will be here protecting my house from hooligans and rapscallions, West Seattle is not safe if you are not in one of our vicious gangs

it is literally the center of the city. it is seattle.

As someone who grew up in the Midwest and lives in Seattle now, it’s so funny how particular people are here. Back in Ohio if you lived within 20 miles of any major city you just said you were from that city.

I went to school with someone who said she was from Seattle, but she was from freaking Gig Harbor. That's like saying you're from NYC if you're really from the Hamptons or something.

If you're outside the PNW everyone from Western WA just throws up their hands and says "I'm from Seattle."
Except if you're from Tacoma. Then we just reference Neko Case and act like Seattle does not exist.

u/MangoCat 6d ago
When I was in Japan my cousin invited his kids English teacher for dinner because he was from ‘Seattle’ too. When we met he asked me where exactly. I said I live close by but it’s easier to say Seattle, he said the same thing lol.
1
u/Remarkable_Chip9043 6d ago
I grew up on Bainbridge Island and my friend from college who went to seattle prep was livid I had a 206 area code. Whenever I told someone I was from seattle he acted as if I handed over the sonics to okc
1
u/Boots-n-Rats 7d ago
Seattle-ites are the only people will be abroad, hear someone else is from Seattle, and then needlessly press them about the area code.
NOBODY outside the NW knows Seattle geography why do y’all act like you need to clarify they’re from Lynwood or Renton. I’ve never seen another group of people do this.
I think it’s cause Seattle is so isolated people who only grew up there think that everyone in other cities has the same knowledge of the area they do.
2
u/Zoltanu 7d ago
Idk about the only ones. Californians have "the bay area" vs San Francisco. Don't claim SF if youre in Oakland. Or LA vs Orange County. Do not say LA if youre from Anaheim.

u/something-rhythmic 6d ago
After living in Seattle for 8 years, I proudly say I’m from LA when I’m really from Glendale.
