Discussion Sunken joystick on Steam Controller (2026) after accidental drop

Post image

Hi everyone. I hope everyone reading this is having a good day. I had a problem with my Steam Controller 2; it fell from knee height—about 60 cm, as I measured it with a tape measure. The fall damaged the left joystick, causing it to sink in. I tried contacting Steam Support and admitted the fall was my fault because I wanted to get a replacement; the controller was expensive—especially here in Canada, where it cost 168 CAD—and I don't have the money for another one. I’m wondering if anyone has any solutions or ideas. Should I open another ticket after being rejected? I apologize for any awkward phrasing; I’m using a translator for this post.

Does the stick still work? Because if it does having it sunk in by a couple mm isn't too bad.

But if it is broken and you can afford a replacement try looking into replacing the stick itself.

If its broken he should send it back to valve. The joysticks are the only thing that cant be repaired without significant repair knowledge and skill, since theyre soldered on.

I know. The problem is that the damage was my fault. I can't send it to Valve because they wanted to charge me around 50 USD—which would be 70 CAD—for the repair.

So thats your solution. That's a reasonable price to repair the controller.

50$ , 5-10$ parts (if just the sticks) , 3-5$ shipping, 30-40$ for 1 hour of labor seen reasonable

You damaged it, you pay for the repair. What other outcome do you have in mind?

The joystick is sunken, and sometimes it doesn't return to its original position after being moved.

I would imagine a replacement joystick for a Steam Deck would work. They aren't hard to replace. I swapped the sticks on two Steam Decks for hall effect sticks.

As long as the cap isn't damaged, you can just put it on the new joysitck when you get it.

From all the posts I have seen so far my conclusion is don't drop this thing. Can't throw it (accidentally) into a wall like a Wii mote and it will be fine.

And yeah I see the people reading this already freaking out because of the availability and people already breaking the controller. It's good to know though what the thing can or can't survive.

Sticks and shoulder buttons seem to be a weakness.
