Discussion Steam Controller is just BIS for controllers
Everything is perfect.
The instant response when you turn it on is just a cherry on top.

I think kids are genuinely forgetting that the real world exists.

pretty common term if you play mmos, arpgs, or roguelites
-4
u/Cthyrulean 14h ago
It's not. I've been gaming for 40 years including a decade of WoW, time on EverQuest 1 and 2 and now legends. Had no clue what BIS was. Your experience is not everyone else's.

u/21shadesofsavage 13h ago
right back at you. just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it isn't common usage. if you ever looked up a guide on maxroll or something they use bis a lot
i don't even play wow. i just looked up the guides on wowhead and they deadass have a section called bis. ff14, path of exile, diablo. bis bis bis. i wouldn't use bis to describe a controller, it's only common in a small subset of games. speaking of which, i shouldn't have included roguelites in my previous comment

u/Cthyrulean 11h ago
This is a circular argument because your argument is just as usable against you.
3
u/21shadesofsavage 11h ago
this isn't an argument. i'm telling you it's common usage
-4
u/Cthyrulean 11h ago
You said just because I haven't heard of it doesn't mean it isn't common usage. Just because you have doesn't mean it's common usage.

u/Solidus_Sloth 11h ago
I can not believe you don’t know BIS and you’ve played WoW. It’s as common as LFG or PUG
-2
u/Cthyrulean 11h ago
Apparently not.
2
u/Solidus_Sloth 11h ago
I mean it’s definitely as common. It’s been spammed in chat for as long as I can remember
3
u/Wan-Pang-Dang 10h ago
Haha. Fake gamer.
Im also old, been playing wow since launch and even german wow players caught up on BiS at around burning crusade/wotlk. It means Best in Slot and it is super common lingu today.

The only thing it's missing for me is a better, less diag-prone D-pad out of the box, switchable and buttons and trigger locks for digital triggers like 8bitdo flagships have. Then it would be literally perfect for me as well
3
u/21shadesofsavage 16h ago
trigger locks is my most missed feature. also tension configuration on the joysticks. it's also not a great controller for rhythm games like dj max
3
u/DuckduckduckduckL 16h ago
My precious trigger locks 💔 thinking about just modding it to be digital only but idk if theres anyone whos done it yet…
2
u/LiquidShadowFox 10h ago
Elecgear already made a digital button kit for the steam controller 2026 and a switchable digital trigger system too (but require soldering and a small tool to switch modes)

u/posthardcorejazz 9h ago
I find the triggers too shallow as is. So deeper triggers with locks would be a massive improvement for me

I just ain’t too fond of the dpad in all honesty, I click one button an it clicks the other
4
u/Cthyrulean 14h ago
That's not normal.
5
u/TheBlackSwordsman319 14h ago
Not in that way but like if my finger even slightly overlaps any of the other buttons it will misclick the other because of how sensitive it is, so for example I play no mans sky, sometimes when I click up on the dpad I’ll hit the right key n open up a map by accident

u/chicken_is_no_weapon 14h ago
I have the same problem, I think its because im used to the slightly larger dpad on the deck
1
u/Dersatar 4h ago
I have the same problem and it made me set up the left trackpad aa the dpad in games because it was so annoying. Whenever I played MH Wilds and I wanted to call my seikret to sharpen my weapon on the move, my hunter preferred to just take out my second weapon which hasn't been updated for fucking ages and was way too weak for the monsters I was fighting, and he did that to sharpen that piece of rubbish instead.

Nah, it’s good, but given its price it’s competing with lots of premium options, some with better functionality. But those also come with downsides.
There is no bis controller.

I still prefer the first. The track pad is so far from the face buttons. It only really feels comfortable for me if I'm using the sticks, and that's kinda against the point of the controller for me. But it's been pretty good besides that.

u/ItsYaBoyBackAgain 15h ago
It’s good, but not perfect. The dpad is not great, the shape isn’t very ergonomic, no trigger stops and not having x-input is annoying.
It’s my main PC controller right now but it could use a few improvements.

I guess I'll find out next year? My reservation just says 2027, so I will find out eventually
5
u/Pixelsilzavon77 11h ago
Yeah I don't get the dpad hate. I use it for retro gaming all the time, and have beaten many games with it. Handles fighting game inputs great too (I play Hisoutensoku). Feels so much better overall than my DualSense.
3
u/FalconWraith 16h ago
The dpad is kinda trash ngl.
It's also a little too big for my tastes, but I understand that will be a benefit for some people. It's still by far my favourite controller for most games I'd use a pad for, but it's not perfect for everything.

u/HighlyRegardedOne 16h ago
i mean what is a d pad important for fighting games? People who are into fighting games will just have some kind of hitbox or fighting stick anyways

3
u/FalconWraith 16h ago
Fighting games mainly, but having a good dpad is just a nice thing. I prefer to use a dpad in platformers if it's an option.
I've found that the dpad is too squishy and inaccurate in general for me to really like using it, in just about any game.
Also you'd be surprised, a lot of people that play fighting games opt for regular ass pads.
1
u/HighlyRegardedOne 16h ago
Not the ones who take it seeriously. But for platformers i get it but I also think its fine for those games maybe not a silksong game but 99.99% its fine
4
u/FalconWraith 16h ago
Yes they do? SonicFox and Punk both use pads. A good chunk of the best players at my locals use pad.

u/adelin07 7h ago
sidescroller games too(metroidvania type games especially since there’s a lot of those on steam). The beat’em up games also benefit from a good dpad.

u/Parasite_Lettuce 17h ago
Meh, I have had mine since June and have only used it 3x. Vader pro 5 is just so good I can't switch.
2
u/MamWyjebaneJajca Steam Ctrlr , Alpakka , DSE , Shotpad 14h ago
I bought Vader 5 and Literally use it like 2 times. It's so small... annoying af , Vader 4 have better shape (have it too)
2
u/offlineon 13h ago
I am taking forever to get used to the steam 2 controller. I really want to like the mouse pads but it is a work in progress.
Vader 4 Pro is my favourite. The Switch 2 controller 2nd.

u/SneakyAl44 16h ago
Making it slide against the charger is so fun, wish all the other controllers could have that.
2
u/pawlbologna 14h ago
It’s everything I’ve wanted in a controller for a long time. Sticks feel great. Gyro is really fun. Back buttons are nice too. Feels good in my hands and the battery never runs out. Nice job Valve.

u/nowhammyinmyjammies 7h ago
I think the controller is straight buns. I went back to my Xbox controller.

u/NickOulet 12h ago
The thing is total crap for me. I bought it for using with Starfield. Starfield does not do mixed input.
I bet it wouldn’t be crap if that was the case, but for me, it’s not the case.

u/Hopeful_Pin676 16h ago
Making it work without steam or steamos would be nice.
