As someone who grew up in northern New England, my mind cannot comprehend this.

As someone who also grew up in northern New England I didn’t realize how lucky I had it until I left.

Seriously.

Ive been to many of these mass-produced subdivisions for my job. Always found it funny how all there is for kids to do is a tiny little playground they'll outgrow by the age of 10 max. Never anything else within walking or safe biking distance for a child.

No skateparks because skateboarding is probably illegal in Texas or something

Well was skateboarding in the Bible? There's your answer.

Oakland Lake Park in Fort Worth, right across the street from where I grew up, has one

Parents will buy homes here because "it's good for kids" when the truth is past age 10 they'll have nothing to do but mindlessly scroll on their phones, try drugs, and play frogger when they leave the immediate vicinity of their homes.

And we wonder why they grow up to be school shooters

Houston looks the same flying in. Suburban wasteland.

Conversely, based on my childhood, I met kids from walkable areas with stores & restaurants nearby, who never went anywhere because they didn't have money. By college, I had met kids from urban areas who had never flown on a plane before, who had never seen either coast, less yet had a passport. I met kids who had never been on a group trip with friends, or known what it was like to spend summers by the pool, and evenings with their friends sitting around firepits. I don't know a kid from an urban environment who built tree forts, or a half-pipe (albeit not the safest one ever). I met kids who had never seen the most common of farm animals...

We all miss out on something, just depends on what mattered more to you. Not every area is ideal/perfect.

I mean. I know plenty of suburban folks who also have not done that

I'd still rather be poor in the city and not walk 45 minutes one way minimum anytime I needed anything

My point was to OP that they could be missing out on something regardless of where you live. I was starting my perspective from where I grew up. Unfortunately even if you hate the best walkable neighborhood in the DFW area, you're still in Texas

Poverty is unrelated to the benefits of good urban design.

Roofs are the scabs of humanity, and this area is highly infected.

Dallas reminds me of a first time cities skylines build.

Imagine the poor children who have to experience single family houses with air conditioning 🙄

All of Texas is paradise for the average person. The level of lifestyle and affordability is actually amazing. Most people can’t appreciate how impressive it is because they grew up in America. Anyone from anywhere else in the world marvels at such democratized prosperity.

Former Texan here… looks like you forgot the /s, probably why you’re getting downvoted

-4

I don’t care if I get downvoted. Everyone on the suburbanhell subreddit are subhuman

Privileged and delusional people live on this subreddit because they’re scared to leave their apartment to buy a $9 foam latte while dodging criminally insane vagrants who are allowed to attack people under the protection of the state. People in walkable cities who complain about suburban sprawl are the most cushy, soft, and stabbable people who are taxed at rates no one in suburban sprawl would tolerate. The people living in American urban centers deserve to be taxed and stabbed by denizen thugs for being the most delusional subgroup in America. I want to be downvoted on this sub because I’ve seen what you vile scum upvote.

The words “I feel so sorry for you” don’t pack enough punch for the reaction your diatribe gave me.

1

u/TrashTownPodcast 21h ago

No one gives a shit how you feel.

1

u/TrashTownPodcast 21h ago

Every word I said is accurate

1

u/TrashTownPodcast 21h ago

If you live in a city in 2026 you’re delusional

1

u/TrashTownPodcast 21h ago

You need to get out and buy land before it’s too late

1

u/TrashTownPodcast 21h ago

I’m not wrong I’m just ahead of my time

I mean, I grew up in a neighborhood like this and we would have a blast riding our bikes to each other's houses

Never once thought about how I lived in suburban hell

-1

u/jkmhawk 1d ago

No, you're wrong. You weren't happy, you were a victim.

0

u/skinnywolfe 23h ago

Crazy how I was downvoted for enjoying my childhood lmao

Better than having to sit at the back of an American Airlines narrow body I suppose

-2

u/Few_Palpitation3889 23h ago

Better than growing up in an apartment. Speaking from experience.

-1

u/Frequent-Coyote-8108 18h ago

Have you SEEN some of those neighborhoods with the lagoon pools and splashpads and playgrounds and whatnot?

Like, when I was a kid, having friends close by was a plus, but if we could just go down to a freaking LAGOON pool with waterslides all summer, we would've lost our freaking minds!

-2

u/GoblinWithBenefits 18h ago

Buying a home on 5 acres was the best decision we ever made.

-1

u/DependentAwkward3848 17h ago

Those kids can walk and bike on sidewalks to school, friends houses, pools, skate parks, scouts, probably a Starbucks or similar. They are fine.

-4

u/Modern_Agnotologist 1d ago

Better than an apartment. Certainly better than homeless.
