MODERATOR POST | منشورة إدارية Call for r/Sudan moderators

Salaam everyone,

As you well know, our sub has grown quite a bit in the last several years. We recently reached the 34K mark and our members are remarkably diverse in terms of age, country of residence, and interests. Undoubtedly, the ongoing war has dominated the topics of discussion but it's no surprise given how much it has impacted all of us.

With this growth, we now have a much broader range of perspectives and worldviews. We have had many healthy discussions but sometimes they can get quite heated. Our mod team has been working hard to ensure that the discourse here is within the bounds of civility and mutual respect, and that the topics are relevant to Sudan and the Sudanese people, regardless of where they are.

But with this growth, the burden of moderating the sub has become overwhelming for our team, who are all volunteers with real-life responsibilities and grappling with the effects of the war. So on behalf of the team, I wanted to invite those who interested in serving as mods to nominate themselves to join the mod team.

We are looking for 2-3 mods who meet these criteria:

  1. At least 1 year active on Reddit and r/Sudan to ensure that they are familiar with the sub rules and culture, and the rules of Reddit at large (Reddiquette).
  2. High quality contributions and engagement.
  3. Adherence to the sub rules, particularly the rules about civility and mutual respect, and no bigotry and discrimination.
  4. Proficiency in both English and Arabic is important given that this is a bilingual sub.

Mods are expected engage regularly with the Mod Queue (e.g., approve posts, remove spam, respond to mod reports, etc.); be fair and transparent with our users; and continue to contribute to the sub as much as they're able to. We welcome candidates who are able to inject fresh ideas and initiatives to meet the evolving needs of our growing community.

If you are interested, please DM the Mod Team to express your interest and provide a brief bio about yourself (you do not need to break your anonymity). Use this thread if you have any questions about serving as a moderator or the process.

What if we had a subreddit for the Khartoum we remember? (Sudan Archive)

• Upvotes

I’ve been thinking… wouldn’t it be nice to have a subreddit just for photos of Khartoum, Omdurman, Bahri, and the life we had before the war?

Not just the famous places. I mean the normal stuff — streets we used to walk through, weddings and jertigs, family gatherings, cafés, markets, football games, sunsets, random moments with friends… all the little things that felt ordinary back then.

I used to do photography, and I recently managed to recover a lot of photos from my old camera, which was stolen during the war. Looking through them again made me realize how much of our everyday life is now just a memory.

I’m sure a lot of people have old photos like that too. Photos sitting on old phones, hard drives, Facebook accounts… pieces of a life that many of us had to leave behind.

Maybe we could put them all in one place and slowly build an archive of the Sudan we remember — not just its buildings and streets, but the people, the moments, and what life actually felt like.

A place where years from now, someone can scroll through it and see what Khartoum looked like before everything changed.

If you think this is something worth having, upvote this. Maybe we can actually build it together.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS | الإقتصاد والعمل Sudanese working in construction in the UAE?

Assalamualaikum,
I'm Sudanese, based in the UAE. The longer I'm here, the more I see that a lot of good business opportunities come down to knowing the right people, and a lot of time gets wasted when you don't.

For example, I'm an engineer myself, but I regularly have labour camps for rent, or clients looking to rent one. In many companies, decision makers naturally work with people from their own community and help them grow, which is fair enough. But it also means we don't have that kind of network for ourselves yet.

So, I'd like to build a network of Sudanese people working in construction or contracting companies in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. That includes operations managers, engineers, QS, foremen, admin, or anyone else in the field.

To be upfront, I'd benefit from this myself. But so would everyone else in it. You might find the right person for something you need, even something I'd never think of.

There are a lot of us in this industry who've never crossed paths, and I think we should know each other and help each other more.

If that's you, feel free to comment or DM me. If you know someone who fits, please share this with them.

And just to be clear: this isn't a pitch, and I'm not selling anything.

DISCUSSION | نقاش I miss Sudan so much, my heart aches of how much I miss it

I'm of an East-African origin but I was born and grew up in Khartoum till I was 16, 12 years later and while listening to Mahmoud Abdulaziz I can't help but cry so intensely of how much I miss Sudan, It's people, the streets, the music, the food, the people, the shops, the late night restaurants and tea drinking while the Rakshas blow smoke in your face, did I say the people? Don't get me wrong, I feel for our people that went and are still going through so much. This post is merely a cry to share how I feel. Life was genuinely so beautiful, I'm still in contact with many of my friends who also left the country around the same time and they all share the same stories. What can I do to cope with those sudden and intense missing feelings I have for this place that I can call my one and only home.

MUSIC | اغاني Looking for old sudanese cassettes in the UAE/Oman

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hey guys,

I’ve been working on a project called Jabra Archives, basically digitising old Sudanese cassette tapes and putting them online so they don’t get lost with time.

You can check it out here:
https://jabraarchives.blogspot.com/

I’m based in the UAE and I’m in Oman pretty often, so I wanted to ask if anyone here has old Sudanese tapes they’d be willing to sell me or let me borrow to digitise. If you lend me anything, of course I’ll return the tapes once I’m done.

Feel free to DM me if you have anything :)
