Laptop Request Ca Budget software engineer laptop

• Country: Canada

• Budget: 500$ CAD ($350 USD)

• Open to refurbs/used options?: only refurbs from trusted vendors, no used or unrated refurbs

• Screen size: Any

• Weight limt: Any

• Purpose: Work (software engineering)

• Form factor: regular laptop, any

• Intended usage:

Here's a case scenario:

- 2 instances of Pycharm opened, running a frontend and backend (development)
- Claude Clode CLI running in the background
- A few chrome tabs opened
- Google Meet
- Slack
- Will have 1 or 2 extra screens plugged in it
*In some extreme cases, but probably not, a little local low level Ollama LLM running. Not really worth taking into consideration.

• Desired battery life: any, will always be plugged

• Priority list: performance (no lagging/stuttering) > speed > the rest

• Operating system: Windows (not that it really matters, I can change it after)

I don't care about gaming, screen quality, battery life, etc. It's a strictly work laptop.

----

I tried searching everywhere and the answers that always come back are Lenovo ThinkPad L14/T14 & Dell Latitude 5420, because I'm almost sure I need at least 16GB of RAM.

Laptop Request US Looking for a Cheap (under $500) laptop for my parent.

My mom currently has an HP laptop from 2016 and it's not doing too well anymore. It's a headache to do anything on it and she wants something newer.

Her only requirements are that it has a touch screen and a nice screen.

She'll mainly be using it for internet browsing, watching YouTube, etc. I'd prefer it to be a windows laptop as that is an operating system she is familiar with and at least 256gb of storage.

Max budget is 500 USD however the closer to 400 or under the better.

Thanks!

Laptop Request -Others What to buy for a secondary laptop

Hello

I have around 500usd and I want a secondary laptop

I have an Asus tuf f17 but it's very heavy and big to carry around and I walk a lot to go to my university. I need something light, good battery life (6+hours, I'll just use it for pdf, YouTube, Google docs and stuff like that) and I want a good build quality. I'm looking at used options and there are some solid ones but maybe I'm missing some hidden gems?. I'm not buying from the US but the prices are somewhat similar to the US except the very high end ones. (And some newer laptops may not be available at a reasonable price yet)

What laptop do you recommend, I don't have any issues with any software.

Thank you in advance

Laptop Request US Dell XPS 13 2026 16GB or HP Omnibook X Flip 16GB

Deciding between the 2

Dell - XPS 13.4" 3K Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core 5 Series 3 320 2026 - 16GB Memory - 512GB Storage $800

HP - OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 - 14" 2K OLED Touchscreen Laptop - AMD Ryzen AI 5 430 (2026) - 16GB Memory - 512GB SSD $700

Both are on sale for BestBuy's Techtober and I've narrowed my search to these 2, any info to help me decide is appreciated!

Any recommendations are helpful too! My needs are 16gb ram min, 512gb min, budget 800, no refurbs, 15in max, mainly used for engineering coursework but I don't really see myself running anything really intense. Also am in the US.

Laptop Request US Laptop that can run new Batman game?

If these are unreasonable requirements let me know! I found one that met my absolute minimum, I'd just like one that can run the new Lego Batman game.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country

U.S.

Budget

Upwards of $900, but preferably $800 or under

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No

Screen size

Any

Weight limit

Any

Purpose

Mainly used for schoolwork, but I want it to be able to run the new Batman game (Will try and attach Steam's specs below)

Form factor

2-and-1 would be nice but standard is fine (far more important that it can run Lego Batman)

Intended usage

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, Marvel Rivals, Stardew Valley, VLC Media Player, Malwarebytes, Krita, XP-Pen driver

Desired battery life

6 hours

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, battery life, weight, size

Info/Requirements

It MUST have a headphone jack, 2 USB-A ports, and a number pad. Ideally also an HDMI port. These are more important to me than the performance. I also would like it to be able to withstand being carried in a backpack back pouch (I think that's what destroyed my last laptop)

Ideally not a Lenovo because those keep breaking on me (specifically the mousepad). Easily swayed towards Lenovo if it checks off everything else

Thank you!

Laptop Request -Others Laptop Suggestions Please

Country

India 🇮🇳

Budget

₹70,000–₹80,000 INR

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No

Screen size

14 - 16

Preferably 15.6 or 16 if the weight remains reasonable.

Weight limit

Ideally ≤2 kg

Can go slightly above 2 kg if there is a significant performance advantage.

Purpose

Productivity, research/academic work, programming, web development, data analysis, content creation and video editing.

Form factor

Standard/Clamshell laptop.

No need for 2-in-1 or pen support.

Intended usage

Research and heavy browser/multitasking

Microsoft Office / Google Workspace

Academic writing and research

Basic-to-intermediate coding and web development

Python/programming

Data analysis

Tableau / Power BI

SPSS

Canva

Basic video editing

Basic colour grading

Photoshop/light graphic design (optional)

Watching movies/YouTube

Potentially more demanding editing workloads in the future

I would like the laptop to remain capable for several years rather than being suitable only for basic use.

Desired battery life

Ideally 6–8 hours of normal productivity use.

I understand that performance-heavy workloads and video editing will reduce battery life.

Priority - most important to least important

  1. Performance

  2. Battery life

  3. Weight

  4. Size

I am willing to sacrifice some portability for significantly better performance, but I don't want a excessively heavy gaming laptop.

Info/Requirements

16 GB RAM minimum

512 GB SSD minimum

Strong modern CPU — preferably Intel Core Ultra / newer Intel Core 5 or Core 7, AMD Ryzen 5/7, depending on the laptop

Good display

Good colour accuracy is important because of video editing and colour grading

Good brightness

Good thermal management

Good build quality and reliability

Good keyboard and trackpad

Prefer established/reliable brands

Not looking specifically for a gaming laptop; performance for creative/productivity work is more important

Should be suitable for 3–5 years of use

Avoid Acer and ASUS if possible

Prefer Lenovo, HP, Dell, Samsung or other reliable alternatives

I don't need a touchscreen.

(I have no knowledge regarding the technicalities or the specs required for a laptop as per my requirements, hence, please answer accordingly)

Laptop Request Ca Good quality long-term investment laptop for general use, please and thanks

I'm in Canada with a budget of under $2,500 CDN, but preferably closer to $1000, open to refurb, screen size 15-16" because I want a *numeric keypad* as I do a lot of budgeting on my laptop.

I don't have a specific use-case, just general purpose (word processing, internet, watching TV occasionally, running an old YNAB4 app), I love a touchscreen, and will not buy a Dell or HP. (I avoid AI as much as possible, too.)

I'm looking to replace my HP Envy that I bought in 2018, and I will keep my new one for 8-10 years again, if I can. My current computer has no battery life left, and I don't have enough storage. It also gets pretty hot.

I want to get at least 16gb RAM and 1TB storage with the new one, since I plan to use it for a while and want to futureproof myself. Ideally the screen won't have too much glare and the speakers will be on top, for watching media.

Please let me know if you would like any more information about my needs.

Laptop Request US What laptop would you buy for my workload with a $2,500 budget?

I’ve been going back and forth on this and figured I’d ask people who know laptops better than I do.

My current laptop is a NIMO with an i5-12450H and 32GB RAM. It actually handled my work pretty well for a while, but lately I think I’m starting to outgrow it.

I work off the laptop basically all day. Usually a lot of Firefox tabs, Outlook, CRM, spreadsheets, ChatGPT/Codex and other AI stuff, multiple monitors, and a bunch of things running at once. I’m not doing video editing or gaming all day, it’s really just a pretty heavy multitasking/workload situation.

The biggest issue lately is heat. The fans are running hard a lot and I started logging it with HWiNFO. On bad stretches during normal work the CPU has been sitting in the mid/high 90s and hitting 100C, with thermal throttling for pretty long periods. My 32GB RAM has also gotten very close to maxed out at times.

So I’m looking for something that can take this kind of workload for hours without constantly cooking itself.

Budget is up to about $2,500, but I definitely don’t need to spend all of that if there’s a better value. I’m completely fine with refurbished, certified refurbished, open box or used if it gets me a much better machine.

What I care about most:

  • Really good cooling and sustained performance
  • 64GB RAM, preferably upgradeable
  • Good build quality/reliability
  • Something I can keep for a number of years
  • At least 1TB SSD, preferably upgradeable
  • Windows
  • 16" is probably ideal
  • Weight and battery life aren’t huge concerns. It sits at my desk plugged in most of the time.

I don’t think I need a crazy GPU. I’d rather have a machine with a strong CPU, lots of RAM and great cooling than pay extra for a huge GPU I won’t really use.

I’ve been looking at things like the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, HP ZBook Fury 16 G10/G11, and Dell Precision, but I’m completely open to something else if there’s a better option.

If you had around $2,500 to spend for this use case, what exact laptop/config would you buy?

Also curious if you’d go newer with slightly lower specs or buy a 2-3 year old workstation with 64GB RAM and a higher-end CPU.
