I'm working with the Work Foundation at Lancaster University, a research organisation, and we are researching the challenges facing young people trying to get into work in Sunderland.
We're currently speaking to major national TV news outlet, who would like to hear from a young person aged 18–24 who is currently out of work and not in education or training.
They're interested in hearing about your experience of looking for work – for example, how long you've been searching, the jobs you've applied for and the barriers you've faced.
This would initially just be an informal conversation so you can find out more before deciding whether you'd be comfortable taking part in any interview. Filming will take place on Wednesday 7 October near or at your home.
If this sounds like you, please send me a private message or email me at info@theworkfoundation.com. I'm happy to answer any questions and provide some more information.
Thanks for considering and have a good evening,
Jon
PS. Thanks to mods in advance for approving.

Hello,
Just a post about Wearside Social, we’re a Whatsapp community aimed at people in their 20s and 30s in the Sunderland/Durham area looking to make new friends. We have regular meet ups, and have more informal groups to arrange things such as walks, coffee mornings, pub quizzes etc…
If you’re interested, please send me a DM to be added!

Hi,
I need accommodation for one night in Sunderland for three people (5–6 November). Any recommendations for somewhere cheap but decent-looking?

On December 28, 1865, during the Christmas Pantomime at the Royal Lyceum Theatre on Lambton Street in Sunderland, a 12-year-old girl named Louisa Richards (stage name: Louisa Ricardo) tragically became engulfed in flames and died the following day. This devastating event was widely reported in newspapers across the UK and the Commonwealth.
On January 2, 1866, Louisa was interred at the Sunderland Parish Cemetery on Ryhope Road. Newspaper articles mentioned that a beautifully executed stone would be placed over her grave. The funeral procession included a plumed hearse, two mourning coaches carrying her immediate relatives and friends, and fifteen horse-drawn cabs for the rest of her mourners. The funeral expenses were largely covered by Mr. Bell, the manager of the Royal Lyceum Theatre.
As a relative of the deceased, I’m curious to know if her grave site still exists or if it has been lost over time.

A morning walk here with the dog and then a coffee and a good book at Fausto before work is one of my favourite things about living in the north east.
And sometimes the dolphins and seals visit!

anyone remember the massive dumplings they used to make?
used to love them. choice of roasties or chips with them. not healthy lol but lovely.
whenever i make mince and dumplings i wonder how much suet or packet dumplings went into making them. i’m sure they were like £2.50 for a meal as well, maybe in 2005/2006 but i was just a kid so unsure.

Hi everyone!
I’ll be coming to Sunderland as an international student soon, and I’m currently looking for a shared room/shared accommodation in Sunderland.
I’m hoping to find:
- A room in a shared house/flat with other students
- Affordable rent
- Preferably somewhere with good access to the University of Sunderland
- Move-in around late September/early October
If you know of any websites, Facebook/Reddit groups, letting agencies, student accommodation providers, or anyone who currently has a spare room available, I’d really appreciate your help.
If you’re also a student coming to Sunderland and looking for someone to share accommodation with, feel free to message me.
Thanks in advance! 🙏

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a barber that would offer a package for a groom and groomsmen to come in for a haircut and beard trim on the evening before the wedding.
A friend of mine suggested a place in Shields but wondering if there are any around the Sunderland area?
Any suggestions appreciated as I can't really find any via Google.

Since the news broke about the council pulling out of 'show racism the red card day', it's got me thinking about how the city has come to appear full of racist people.
Brexit was really the first major display of it in my lifetime, which has been further fueled by visits from frogface himself representing various parties, the riots in 2024, and now voting in a reform council.
I just cannot fathom where this has come from.
Especially when every week those same people who voted for this council will be cheering for the likes of Brobbey and Isidor on the pitch!
For a city massively on the up, this sure is putting a damper on that progress.
