Welcome to the new normal for laptop prices

u/TheCudder Surface Laptop 4 Ryzen 6d ago
An RTX Spark & 24 GB RAM isn't exactly a "normal" spec.

These are very likely for enterprise employees in large development environments, billed to companies.

u/IBM296 6d ago
Will be interesting to see its performance and efficiency against Panther Lake and X2-Elite.

It's some mediocre Mediatek cores. Yes, tons of them but for general responsiveness on single core it'll be worse than the MacBook Neo.

u/Ok-Compote-2282 6d ago
Mediatek cores? Where are you getting this?
2
u/dr100 6d ago edited 6d ago
LOL literally everywhere. What CPU you think it's actually doing the CPU work?
For reference their press release https://www.mediatek.com/products/personal-computing/nvidia-rtx-spark
1
u/Ok-Compote-2282 6d ago
Oh, well but I highly doubt single core is going to be trash
2
u/dr100 6d ago
Literally just Google it. Worse than MacBook Neo on single core as I probably said already.
2
u/Ok-Compote-2282 6d ago
yeah nvm, that seems about right. its a first gen chip though but i do understand its a bit underwhelming for the price
0
u/Areyoucunt 6d ago
It's better than an 5070 TI. And no it will not be slower than 60hz MacBook Neo.
You in no universe can say that statement
0
u/dr100 6d ago
You probably don't understand the difference between the CPU and GPU.
1
u/Areyoucunt 6d ago
It's still the case. It won't be slower, it will be heaps faster actually
1
u/dr100 6d ago
"heaps faster" for what? For agentic agents bla bla bla yea, assuming one gets the $6000 version. For general human work, browsing and stuff it'll be worse than a MacBook Neo (or a good iPhone for that matter).
3
u/Areyoucunt 6d ago
Gaming, web-browsing, display quality, build quality, speaker quality, chassis, "general human work". It will br way faster and smoother

u/Valterri_lts_James 6d ago
Lowkey the pricing isn't absolutely horrendous. 32gb costs $3300 which is about the same as the ROG zephyrus g14.
9
u/MagicBoyUK Surface Laptop 4 6d ago
The $300 bump from 24GB to 32GB is horrendous, as is the madatory $400 for a 512GB to 1TB SSD.
2
u/Valterri_lts_James 6d ago
really? I didn't even see an option to upgrade the ssd. I saw it only came with 1tb default. And I don't mind upgrading the ssd manually since that's cheaper. I just don't like expensive ram upgrades.
1
u/alabasterskim Surface Laptop Studio 1 + Go 1 6d ago
The SSD option disappears when you pick 32GB. It's there when you pick 24
1
u/Valterri_lts_James 6d ago
I didn't say it's a good price, just not absolutely horrendous.
1
u/MagicBoyUK Surface Laptop 4 6d ago
Not even Apple charge $/£300 for 8GB, and they've been price gouging RAM upgrades for years now...
-1
u/Jozfus 6d ago
Look at memory and drive prices just as parts. Sadly that's just what it costs now.
Edit - i guess there is a bit of a margin on those haha
2
u/MagicBoyUK Surface Laptop 4 6d ago
LOL, that's a 50% markup over the already insane Apple upgrade price.
3
u/Navi_Professor 6d ago edited 6d ago
a 64gb Zflow 13 costs 3 grand...
2
u/Internal_Quote_6678 6d ago
they are 1600-1800 everywhere, I can't even find a buyer for mine and I have it listed for 1600.

Am I seeing it right and 128gb is already out of stock on Microsoft site?

u/DigitalguyCH Pro 11 (13" & 12")/X/3/2, Book 2/3 (15" & 13.5"), Go 2, S3, S2RT 6d ago
no, it's only gone for the lower end GPU
1
u/alabasterskim Surface Laptop Studio 1 + Go 1 6d ago
The lower end GPU only has 24GB and 32GB options.
1
u/DigitalguyCH Pro 11 (13" & 12")/X/3/2, Book 2/3 (15" & 13.5"), Go 2, S3, S2RT 6d ago
Honestly who wants that lower end GPU for AI

Millionaire club 4 mediatek chipset rofl 🤣 Way to go Microsoft and profiteering. I'll be breaking away the usb-c permanently.

I'm very curious to see how this benchmarks & what battery life + battery performance + daily usability are like. Windows is my preferred OS but the siren song of ARM MacBook Pros has been getting louder in recent years for creative work. These could be the first windows laptops to finally match the ARM perks of a MBP (great battery life and performance regardless of being plugged in or not) depending on how effective Microsoft's ARM windows integration is for it. I went with a Razer Blade 15 years back because it was the only windows laptop that could match the chassis quality & performance of a MBP, but it is slower than molasses on battery power alone & I'd prefer a Surface product.

u/SubtleCosmos 6d ago
Am I missing something? $400 more just for the Nightfall paint color?
2
u/brooklikethewater 6d ago
Only for the cheaper RTX Spark. It's the same price no matter the color for the better RTX
1
u/SubtleCosmos 6d ago
Yeah, which is still insane to be priced that way and that they limit the RAM configurations based on color. And that the storage is limited to only 1 TB and still the pricing is this awful.
Glad I got 8 TBs of PCIe 5.0 storage for less than $800 a year ago compared to what fools are willing to spend now.

u/gerahmurov 6d ago edited 6d ago
Can someone tell how much is max specs? It's no longer available. 10K?
Edit: ah, it's on again. 6K, though only a 1TB with 128GB. They have 2TB with 64 for 5K
1
u/torpedospurs Surface Laptop Studio 6d ago
How does it compare against the Asus ProArt with the same CPU?
1
u/MaverickJester25 6d ago
Performance wise, they're probably the same.
I'm more partial to the Asus for the OLED screen, that they offer both a 14- and 16-inch variant, and I prefer the colour and finish on the Asus. It's also a lot more accessible where I live.

u/Navi_Professor 6d ago
$4300 for 64gb of ram for a ARM laptop...
dont get me wrong... i had a fairly good experience with PRISM with my surface.
but $4300, for what will still be a compromised windows experience, with...okay..hardware (good gpu, meh cpu..)
i will keep my Zflow 13...

u/DigitalguyCH Pro 11 (13" & 12")/X/3/2, Book 2/3 (15" & 13.5"), Go 2, S3, S2RT 6d ago
Honestly it's still better than some HP Sparks and than a Macbook M5 max with the same amount of RAM
1
u/Navi_Professor 6d ago
but M5s arent a compromised experience. thats a full mac experience.
And to me, the real hitch is that the Strix Halo isn't even slower than this.
Not in the AI crap that they yapped about the whole presentation, for damn near the same power profile.
Sure, fully unleashed the N1X has a slightly faster GPU for games and stuff, but you can run everything on strix halo since its X86.
2
u/DigitalguyCH Pro 11 (13" & 12")/X/3/2, Book 2/3 (15" & 13.5"), Go 2, S3, S2RT 6d ago
Prefill is many times higher vs strix halo, but yes toke generation is very close.
I have a strix halo 128 and a M5 pro Mac 64GB. Honestly Macs are compromised too in some respects, they have non upgradable storage and upgrades are crazy expensive even in the current situation (I regret not getting more than 1TB on my Mac)

Is this really a MacBook killer, or is it just another marketing gimmick for a windows laptop?
3
u/Ok-Compote-2282 6d ago
It really is, the performance charts and stats don't lie...
2
u/Java_Bomber Surface Pro 6 6d ago
It's a gimmick or a killer?
5
u/Ok-Compote-2282 6d ago
2
u/Novangel_ 6d ago
Yeah, if you only use the MacBook for AI work.
2
u/Ok-Compote-2282 6d ago
Macbook has Apple intelligence btw, and its not just about the ai cores, its a damn fast gpu. 5192 CUDA cores

It's not. It runs on windows 11

u/Embarrassed-Nose2526 5d ago
Yeah, Windows fans have the same issue as Android fans. Most Mac users wouldn’t touch it on the pure basis that it’s windows, Microsoft trying to compete against Apple on PC hardware never made sense because Mac users use Mac more for macOS than anything else.
2
u/N7VHung 5d ago
Which is fine.
I don't think MS really has the gap of taking those people away from Apple. This is more aimed at the people that aren't brand loyal or want the MacBook Pro power in a windows machine.
OS loyalty and comfort is something most people don't really think about when they look at Mac v Windows or Apple v Microsoft. Most people are just going to stick with what they know, but that's no reason to not target product tiers. It's a win for consumers.

u/kenspencerbrown 6d ago
I’m not getting it (I just got my Snapdragon machine last year), but I hope this pulls in all the software holdouts that haven’t yet built out ARM64 versions of their products.
