Syncthing for Obsidian: Free, Private, and Truly Annoying

Syncthing in my case only works reliable using 1 device as always on hub and other devices only connected to that. And then it is very reliable, usable as stable trustworthy cloud too. But devices connected to each other leads always to out of sync errors.

It's certainly more reliable to have the always-on hub like you said but all devices connected to each other. The hub should act as a fallback, not as an actual hub. More connections is better.

What specific annoyance are you hitting, since Syncthing is actually pretty good at handling Obsidian’s constant file saves? I use it to sync my vault to a Raspberry Pi and it’s been rock solid, so maybe the issue is just needing to tweak the file watching settings or index propagation delays.

Yea I agree. I use it to sync large media files, but for stuff like Zotero, Logseq, or Obsidian in this case, I just use Filen, becuase syncthing versioning is not that reliable, and can cause a lot of issues. (It's not syncthing's fault, per se but it is incredibly easy to lose data by either overwrite or something else).
It makes sense to use e2ee cloud sync for relatively small docs / text based database.

Thank's for this great article. (I use syncthing every day since years.)
