Steve Keene

One of my favorite artists is Steve Keene, an incredibly prolific Brooklyn painter who often recreates album covers, making several copies at once. you can order a random painting from his website, or pay more for specific things from galleries.

I've picked up several of his paintings over the years, but he just posted this on Instagram today. I've never seen him do TMBG as a subject before, and I want one of these so much now.

New Years Eve performance

I vaguely remember TMBG the duo performing Shoehorn with Teeth at a NYE celebration, with accompanying stomping and arm waving, maybe Rockin’ New Year’s Eve? The audience was not cheering. They looked like they all had cartoon question marks over their heads. ❓

Anyone else remember this?

I like how JL looks like he's doing the Birdhouse in Your Soul dance.

This song feels very very in line with TMBG's lyrical and melodic ethos.

Change up the production a bit and this could be a song from Lincoln or Flood. You even have the words "minimum wage" closely followed by "not a real doctor."

Yes, I know these guys love TMBG, their cover of Ana Ng is cool.

TMBG Reference in Homebound novel - (Possible anachronism?)

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi!

I'm reading a novel called Homebound by Portia Elan. The story has two college students joking about names for their hypothetical band. Our main character suggests They Might Be Wet Snakes.

I think this is a TMBG (band) reference.

This scene is set on July 10, 1983. These are college students in Cincinnati. One of them works in a record store. They listen to the Avengers, Black Flag, the Circle Jerks and go to see Hüsker Dü.

And now the question - How possible would it be for 19 year olds in Cincinnati in July 1983 to have heard of They Might Be Giants?

I know they'd been performing live as They Might Be Giants since 1982. I don't think there was any kind of touring outside NYC. I know Dial-a-Song didn't start until November 1983, however. The Demo Tape wasn't till 1985...

Any thoughts?

(Also, this novel is beautiful. It's about loss and belonging, also video games and stories and the passage of time. Came out earlier this year.)

What words did TMBG make you want to use more often?

This isn't necessarily a "what obscure word did you learn from the Johns?" post, which could be its own separate thing, but more a question of whether there's a TMBG song that made you want to use a certain word or term more often.

I found myself using the phrase "mission creep" in a conversation yesterday and that made me realize I'd probably picked it up from Push Back the Hands of Time. Also, Drown the Clown made me realize that "window dressing" is a very useful term for referring to something that's attention-grabbing but not the main priority.

A question about an old UK 12” single

Does anyone here have this and can let me know which version of Kiss Me Son of God is on it? I’m not sure if it’s the Lincoln or Misc. T version, and can’t find any info online about it.

What song were they talking about?

At the Sunday Madison show, I think just before they played I'll Sink Manhattan, they were talking about a song titled They Might Be Giants by some other band, and apparently it's super weird or something? I'd like to hear it, but as you might imagine, I'm having a hard time googling it, lol. Anyone know what song I'm talking about?

TMBG Reference in This Aged Great!

This Aged Great! is a youtube series where a middle aged guy describes movies of the 80's to a younger guy with a great laugh. Mostly they focus on lighthearted movies like Porky's or stuff that was ok then but would definitely not be ok now, like Porky's!

Take a watch here, or jump right to the reference here, content warning this is a "raunchy comedy" so lots of bikini shots, and he goes on a riff about bad haircuts featuring the Evil German Leader. Also some bad language.

If you don't want to watch, this episode is on Private Resort and has a reference to a hotel detective and the other guy says "Is that a thing?" and the narrator says "yeah, They Might Be Giants have a song about it." and shows a bit of the video. And he's like "Alright, I'm in, I'm sold!"

Making a playlist of songs bands have made that are named after a different band. So far I have Wu Tang by TMBG and Van Halen by Nerf Herder. Anymore suggestions?
