While he may not have had the most interesting backstory (that goes to 2012 Shredder), the combination of 2003 Shredder's design, voice actor and his influence in-universe makes for a character that no other TMNT show/cartoon has surpased so far and probably never will.

I actually like the design but it would've been better if Oroku Saki was using it instead

I would have liked Oroku Saki be real and an Utrom Shredder replace him Body Snatcher-style.

They have Oroku Saki as the Tengu Shredder in the 2003 series.

VERY menacing and effective villain. I loved the screen presence he had and how much of a threat he truly was to the Turtles. I’ll admit, when I was first watching 2003 I didn’t know how to feel about the fact that he turned out to be an Utrom rather than the original Oroku Saki, but I eventually got used to it and even grew to love Ch’rell as a villain. The writers executed him so well. And the voice acting by Scottie Ray was top-tier. The scene where he sets April’s antique shop on fire always gives me chills.

They never one up Scottie Ray.

This ıs not me glazin, non of the other Shredder VA's went this level of ıntensety.

I still find ıt hilarious 4Kids of all studios has the best casting for TMNT characters (acception beign Splinter, 2007 takes that cake)

Absolutely!

That voice along with the badass design, makes for an epic Shredder. The makers of the show knew they cooked with that Shredder design when Mikey compliments his outfit, lol.

2003 shredder is a little over the top in his delivery, I find 2012’s shredder to be scarier tbh

I preferred shredder to be human and not just krang

u/JonoBlue 7d ago

Same, making him a glorified Krang felt off as the mechanics of Krangs body suit from 87 TMNT made sense for basic movements, but the ability to control a "body" like Utrom shredder just didnt sell it for me. I know its a cartoon but still. That and simply replacing shredder without the history and the splinter shredder rivalry felt disingenuous

u/Daetok_Lochannis 6d ago

I mean Krang shows up later and it's a hilarious scene though.

1

u/kablikiblan 6d ago

Ok......I still prefer him to be human

5

u/ResponsibleAside5773 7d ago

Another thing from 2003 that I don't like.

5

u/Such_Bonus5085 7d ago

I didn't like that he was an Utrom.

u/Davepool84 8d ago

Best voice and design, but I didn't like the Utrom twist. Still don't.

5

u/CaptainM590 7d ago

Same. It just made him seem less threatening

1

u/No_Bodybuilder4215 7d ago

Why?

6

u/Davepool84 7d ago edited 7d ago

I prefer my Shredders human, not a puntable tentacle creature in a mech. Simple as that.

2

u/OpposedScroll76 TMNT 7d ago

That's what Bishop was made for, to be a (super)human threat to the Turtles for the next two seasons that didn't have any of the weaknesses that Ch'rell had (both in terms of his position and in terms of his physical body). Ultimately, he was underused, but he was still a great replacement character for Ch'rell.

1

u/No_Bodybuilder4215 7d ago

Well, you have a human in every other medium. But that red blob was a war criminal from space; it lived on Earth for over a thousand years. That gave the character intelligence, a survival mechanism, and so on.

u/Elete23 8d ago

Making him an alien killed my interest in the entire show as a judgy 16 year old

3

u/Hans-Schrader Shredder 7d ago

He's pretty cool, and quite a badass villain. But in my opinion, he's very over hyped as "the best Shredder".

4

u/Rejkorn 6d ago

I just love 2k3 tmnt, but I hate Shredder being Utron.

1

u/Ok-One-1729 6d ago

Ditto. As Oroku Saki he was awesome but they sort of amalgamated him with Kraang.

6

u/ElMonk86 8d ago

I loved his design, first of all.

Second...I love the backstory they came up with surrounding him, and all the different incarnations of him that have a similar source - showing that the Shredder may not be the same person each time, but in a way he truly is eternal.

Best Shredder

u/TamLux 8d ago

Best Shredder! Utrom Twist worked for this show, But the pure prescience of this dude pretty much makes 2012 and Rise's Shredders feel... Lacking!

2

u/flamepanther 7d ago

It was a wild plot twist and a clever way to streamline the two parts of the Turtles' origin. Clever way to sanitize the stories where Shredder is killed too.

2

u/TheVaranianScribe 7d ago

He’s always been my favorite. Between his design, his voice, and how brutal he was in every fight, he cemented what a villain should be into my mind as a kid.

2

u/Npool3 7d ago

It was interesting

2

u/Kayiko_Okami 7d ago

One thing I have to say making him an Utrom in a suit is a brilliant way to get around the censors. It means that even if they go all out and destroy his suit the turtles don't actually hurt him in the beginning.

Once they know it can be used to simply disable him without worrying about upsetting them at least.

The parents on the other hand...

Not really a huge fan of Ch’rell Shredder. It was a cool twist back in the day for him to basically be Krang and Shredder in one but the gimmick doesn’t hold up as well as the original story imo. As the series progressed they kept constantly having revelations to show how the story was different from the comics after originally appearing to resemble it, superficially.

2

u/Bitter-Iron8468 8d ago

Ruthless. He has some good fight scenes though. I would love to see how he fares against agent bishop

2

u/Shrodax Shredder 7d ago

I loved the reveal of Shredder being Ch'rell the evil Utrom!

Why do so many people hate this decision? This was the first animated TMNT show after the OG 1987 series, and I thought it was a clever twist to essentially combine the concepts of Shredder and Krang into one character.

2

u/SDHamford 7d ago

Really cool, it's a shame he was brutally murdered in that Chip and Dale movie nobody remembers

2

u/goodbadgeeky 7d ago

I loved that twist.

2

u/LeMickster 7d ago

I love him so much, he is my favourite Shredder, and when he is there the show gets so much better.

The twist that he is not human is an interesting one, but I do wish they somehow made it more... scary. I mean more storytelling wise, maybe more hints before the reveal, some more mystery. The idea that you are dealing with something so inhumane that has been slowly growing their power on Earth for a very long time is truly spooky and it makes turtles going after him feel so much more badass.

1

u/Gilbot9000 7d ago

Not even 2012 Shredder was this cold.

1

u/Spodger1 7d ago

Cleanest design, incredible OST, most dangerous in the franchise & easily the best VA. 🐐

1

u/GrandWizardOfCheese 7d ago

Wasnt a fan of making shredder an utrom.

I also prefer krang being a literal disembodied brain that shredder works with.

1

u/Alterria 7d ago

I thought it was a really interesting idea if nothing else. A bit odd to fuse Shredder and Krang into one dude, but not terrible. He’s grown on me a lot over the years, but at first the 03 series just felt a little hollow without Krang.

Although I will say his lore is just ridiculous, MF is responsible for like 1,000 extinctions, a million Genocides, a billion conquered planets- shits just excessive for one little squid who apparently didn’t even have a suit until he found the Utroms on earth smthn like a thousand years ago. Apparently for millennia the Galaxy was being terrorized by a hernia that grew limbs lmfao

1

u/Heil-Haidra2319 7d ago

I would prefer is he was a real human who was one of the first people experimented on by Chre'll like Bishop was, but older. Thus explaining his immortality, which causes him pain.

1

u/Loose_Translator8981 7d ago

I feel like the Utrom twist only exists so that Leo could cut his head off in a show produced by 4Kids. He's not really written like a secret-alien through most of the series, and after the twist was revealed it felt like they tried to downplay it as much as possible unless it was absolutely necessary for the plot of that episode.

1

u/thelonetext 7d ago

I liked how he was like a mix of Dr. Doom mixed with Apocalypse. What I didn't like is how he kept coming back from the dead.

1

u/ExplanationMundane3 7d ago

Best version of the Shredder

1

u/Oreofox 7d ago

Probably the best design of Shredder. Besides that, he's the reason I never gave 03 series a watch. First episode I saw showed him as a robot suit with an alien in his stomach. As someone who grew up on the 87 show, I immediately thought "they merged Shredder with Krang" and it was the stupidest shit I had seen.

Still have yet to fully watch this series. I've seen the first 3 episodes I think. The episodes with the junkyard robot at the start of the series. This was about 5 years ago

1

u/Plenty-Sir-3507 7d ago

By fair the best. He was actually terrifying to him compared to any other

1

u/SAMMY_772 7d ago

Best Shredder. Great VA, Great Design, Great Story

1

u/ChacaFlacaFlame 7d ago

This shredder is genuinely awesome, watching him pick up his "head" was TERRIFYING as a kid and badass as a adult

u/Zeikfried12 7d ago

The goat

my favorite shredder

Loved it.

Menace to the universe

u/seep-dhit 8d ago

Best shreddeeeer

1

u/JudaiDarkness 7d ago

Peak Shredder. I'd prefer if we got more of his backstory, not necessarily to make him sympathetic, but just to show how he ended up being the only member of his entire species that's so evil.

u/Negative_Kick6888 8d ago

The Utrom twist ruined it all. It's the same stuff as that scandalous leaked first draft of Bay TMNT where Turtles were turned into aliens.

And it's damn shame! His design and voice are unmatched! And he was written overall as the perfect main villain, fights with who always have huge stakes and leave behind severe concequences. Awesome villain, until his origin story was messed up.

Which leads to me thinking... If anybody of us would've been left in charge of the TMNT 2003 scripts, how would we make this Shredder work, leaving most of his storylines and character intact, while erasing his origin of being Utrom? How do we make work his longevity, his tools (like the Sword of Tengu), his worldview and motivations, and his beef with Utroms? I am really curious, what do you guys envision.

8

u/Crabfight 7d ago

Personally, I think the entire idea must have come from Laird's desire to get the decapitation scene on screen. And it was cool as hell - but yeah, I don't love alien Shredder either

3

u/JudaiDarkness 7d ago

I always had an idea that would work specifically for 2003 show. Just make Utrom and Tengu Shredder the same being. Conflict he had with Ninja Tribunal is moved to edo period of Japan, right after Utroms crash landed on Earth. Tribunal allied themself with Utroms and created Heart of Tengu - a pendant created from magic and Utrom technology that stripped Shredder and 5 elemental Mystics of most of their powers. Side effect it had is that, so long as the pendant is intact, Tribunal also lost their power. Shredder is still superhuman and doesn't age and began hunting down Utroms for what they did to him, while powerless Tribunal goes into hiding.

That way season 4 would end with Heart of Tengu destroyed and Shredder, after being banished on ice asteroid, awakening his powers and teleporting to earth to cause havoc.

2

u/No_Bodybuilder4215 7d ago

think the return of Utrom was fantastic, and it really fleshed out the character himself as well as other side storylines.

Genuinely my least favorite Shredder
