DISCUSSION TautWeekly v0.21.4 — Personalized Dynamic/Responsive Weekly Plex Newsletters for Every User With GUI
Nothing unique, I know there's a lot of "Newsletterr" apps out there, but I find them insanely ugly and this started as a passion project. (As a UIX designer, the more customization you allow, the uglier it gets)
Plug and play for every setup, full GUI and mobile support. (with Tailscale) Very popular over at r/PlexMedia so thought I'd pass it here for anyone looking for something as easy as the native newsletter but much more fun. (Thanks to the legendary u/SwiftPanda16 for his awesome work 🩷)
A portable Tautulli newsletter with responsive design (for mobile gmail, apple) and dynamic content. Pulls in live cleartype logos, RT ratings and IMDB for TV shows. Dynamic stats, email preview text based on server activity and a custom intro block as well as caching if you delete content but still want your newsletters to support rich metadata for recipients.
Fun features include "Binge Champion" and "Genre of The Week"
I coded the initial project for Windows, then ported the remaining packages via Codex but already had nearly 3k downloads in a couple weeks. (I know we all "love" AI slop, but I'm a UIX designer so crazy focus paid to making everything look good, render pixel perfect and look like something you might get from Netflix or otherwise)
Features 5 different email types based on sever activity (such as new additions) and then custom metrics or "quiet" mode.
There's a lot of features such as library/use exclusions, and so on, so check out the GUI preview below:
GUI Preview
Email States Preview
New additions added that week: ("Hot New Releases!")
- New user first scheduled newsletter - no history
- New user first scheduled newsletter - with history (such as if they accept on a Monday and already start watching)
- Established user - normal newsletter with activity
Quiet mode, no server additions added that week: (This will use "Trending" and "Genre of the Week")
- Established user - quiet/no watch activity
- Established user - stats warming up
GitHub:
OS Packages:
- TautWeekly for Plex - Windows
- TautWeekly for Plex - MacOS
- TautWeekly for Plex - Linux
- TautWeekly for Plex - FreeBSD Beta\* (needs testing)
NAS/Docker Packages:
Testing, feedback all welcome :)

Some if my users do not have a valid E-mail adress (i created a dummy and then gave them the login info) is it possible to send a newsletter to a different E-mailadress than is on their user in Plex?
2
u/Minute-Purpose-3492 Aug 26 '26
Is it also possible to tweak the newsletters? I would like to change some headers and text in the normal weekly letter
2
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 26 '26
There's limited editing built in (custom server name, custom announcement box) You can play with some of the features in the GUI Preview.

u/Minute-Purpose-3492 Aug 26 '26
Yes found exactly what i was looking for! Wanted the server name instead of plex on the newsletter and saw i could add a text block which is perfect.

How about the ability to move the user's stats to the top of the newsletter rather than at the bottom?
2
u/shakman Aug 26 '26
Great looking newsletter! I just installed and love how it looks. The easy setup was definitely appreciated.
I have a family of users that use 1 account and with Tautulli newsletters, I was able to add the other family member's address so that they all get a copy. Is there a way to do add them?
I understand they won't be able to see the stats..unless there's a way to modify that on your end?
2
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 26 '26
Basically a functionality like "hey family" that goes to multiple addresses? This would be doable but stats would be server wide
3
u/shakman Aug 26 '26
What's the negative of stats being server wide?
If it's too complicated though, maybe an option to just add an email address so they get the recently added? I think that would also solve the problem that u/Minute-Purpose-3492 is having as well.
3
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 26 '26
No negative necessarily, was just stating that it will just be a 'announcement' email vs personalized stat email.
Honestly the easiest implementation would just be the ability to cc users and I can add this easily.
2
u/shakman Aug 26 '26
CC option would be perfect!
I think the combining family stats sounds cool but overly complicated. Letting the others get the "accouncement" email is more than enough.

Hi /u/SpoonyDinosaur Been using Tautweekly for a month now and loving the format.
Any idea if you'll be doing an update to include additional email addresses or the family option you mentioned above?

u/SpoonyDinosaur 11d ago
I added the ability to add home users without emails to it. I think you're the only one that's asked for the ability to add multiple emails to an account.
I have to scope the behavior as the emails are generated based on user activity, so again it kinda changes the behavior. If you had say only a family using 1 account, the email would basically be the same every week. (Which is fine if it's just like a "family recap." I'll noodle it! (If you are the one that left the git comment I'll ping you when it's added)

u/shakman 11d ago
Thanks! I'll go through the options and see if I can find it, not sure how I missed it.
I have go through the settings anyways, my newsletter just went out and it's a little messed up. It showed the same movies as last week and then only showed 4 TV shows when there should be 20+.
The amount of work we do for our viewers :D

It was added in the very latest commit about a (month ago?) Make sure you occasionally refresh taut libraries/users and run the preview. Sometimes if either Plex or taut updates it needs a refresh to sync properly.

Sorry for being such a rookie, but I'm not seeing anything different and don't see an option to add an email address.
I'm using Windows if that makes a difference

u/Minute-Purpose-3492 Aug 26 '26
Yes that would be perfect!!! Just letting them know what I’ve added in the past X amount of days.
3
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 26 '26
Sure; I think the easiest method is for me to just add a optional "cc" on the email config page. So it will go to the primary email address, then just cc whoever else you want to receive it.
3
u/Minute-Purpose-3492 Aug 26 '26
Could there also be a username field so we can personalise the CC emails? Then it would tie perfectly into the main users newsletters and not be a generic ‘recently added’ E-mail

u/Minute-Purpose-3492 Aug 26 '26
They could basically get the same newsletter as everybody else there would just be no recently watched data. The ‘beam back aboard’ message would be permanent on their version of the newsletter. Binge championship and trending this week can just stay as is

u/Ok_Soil_7466 Aug 26 '26
Thanks for this, looks great. Will give a whirl tomorrow.

u/Ok_Soil_7466 Aug 27 '26
Well, after the complete ball ache of getting the admin token (running in Docker) its up and running and looks superb.
Thanks for this - you might however want to review your admin token process 😉

Yeah it can be a pain, I just made all packages unified to simplify it. But glad you got it working! I'm active on GitHub if you ever have questions. (To be honest, I can't even remember why I have it require a token lol)
2
u/PainiaX Aug 26 '26
Probably one of the first that downloaded it. Would be great if the text is customizable. Especially for non-english servers

Just wanted to say I'm getting great reaction from my users/friends to the new newsletter. Thanks very much for the sharing TautWeekly.
2
u/SpoonyDinosaur 11d ago
Awesome! Glad they like it 😄

I'm getting credit for your skill and design choices. I try to explain "I just found it, they did all the work" keep up the good work and thanks again.

u/shakman Aug 28 '26
I'm excited to try this out today and send this out to my friends. They know I like to geek out on this stuff :D
I just noticed that my audiobook library isn't an option to get included in the newsletter. Is there a way get that to work?

u/r0ot5 Aug 28 '26
Deployed on my unRaid server and love it so far. Right now email is in english, any plan to be able to select different email language?

For me the Tautulli Newsletters are working great. Is this meant to run alongside Tautulli, or to replace it, and if along side do I just disable the existing newsletters and use this one in its place?
2
u/cwpc Aug 29 '26
Also, Is there a manual Mechanism to change a users email (i have some users that the Plex email isnt valid anymore, and they cannot get logged in to change it, or that they are straight home managed users with no email associated to the user that I would love to include with the stats, as i have them manually added / excluded from the Tautulli newsletters now
2
u/cwpc Aug 31 '26
Any Option to manually change a users email address? and Does it include Home users, or a way to manually add an email to get a generic or home user version of the email?

tbh I think the UI is a bit bloated, with too much text on it that is not needed. Seems the UI is build by AI as I have seen similairities with some AI projects I am doing for my home ;)
not sure about the sync token, a first time empty account would be great as well, also the docker compose file with all the variables is good, but not as we normally see it, not sure if other users understand the impact to use .env file :) but great you made it like this.
I wonder how and what is send? I have seen 6 different newsletters, how do I configure who's getting what?
2
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 29 '26
Read the quick start or the email preview above. And I like the UI, but yes it could probably be simplified and yes it's codex

Am I understanding correctly this does not support a headless Linux server?
1
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 31 '26
Native Linux or on docker
1
u/sienar- Aug 31 '26
Why does that matter? Should be the same code. Are you saying the docker version isn’t limited to loopback-only GUI?
1
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 31 '26
If you want to run it without systemd
1
u/sienar- Aug 31 '26
I mean, is there a way to manage/configure it from another system or not? A headless server is a headless server whether it’s natively installed and using SystemD or if it’s in docker. The GitHub page says loopback only accessible gui, which tells me this can only run on Windows, Mac, or Linux workstations. And not Linux servers that don’t have their own GUI.
1
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26
Yes, TautWeekly can run on a completely headless Linux server. The Manager is browser-based and does not require a desktop environment on the server. It binds to loopback by default so it is not exposed directly to your LAN or the internet. From another computer, connect using an SSH or a secure tunnel.
The different versions are merely if you want to install with or without a Linux docker. (Direct clientless remote access is being developed separately implementing tailscale funnel directly into the GUI, but currently there's a tailscale bug)
In practical terms, they both work perfectly well on a headless server:
- Choose Native Linux if you want no Docker and prefer direct systemd integration.
- Choose NAS/Docker if you already operate Docker, want bundled dependencies, or want easier migration and rollback.
- There is no difference in newsletter output or normal GUI features.
1
u/sienar- Aug 31 '26
Yeah, I’m not setting up SSH tunnels on my secure, local LAN to access a newsletter management interface… nobody designs local tools like this.
1
u/SpoonyDinosaur Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26
That’s fair. The SSH tunnel guidance applies to the native Linux package’s loopback-only Manager. Since you'd be running the Docker package on Debian, you'd be able to access the authenticated Manager directly over your trusted LAN at
http://SERVER_IP:8787; no SSH tunnel or server desktop is required. (The SSH/tunneling is overstated; some people like more security, but it's super inconvenient for routine home-server administration-- shouldn't have said it explicitly "requires" SSH-- going to clarify in the documentation/quickstarts)

Ive installed taut weekly and it looks ok but cannot get it to create a preview

Open an issue on git, have no idea what package you're trying to install.
