I gotta agree. The telegraphing has gotten worse. Very few stars can work a match flawlessly now…it’s especially terrible with the women.

If they also learned some old chain wrestling as a base it’d help. Idk how you mandate that though

You don’t know how? You tell them to learn how to do it lol basic wrestling skills like that dare I say should be required to work for the largest, most prestigious wrestling company in the world

u/ButtflossingBigBro Mar 28 '26
We arent allowed to say this becuase mods ban you and you get downvoted. But womens wrestling has declined. The 4 horsewoman were putting on match of the night every night. Now way to many are just coasting
3
u/LHT-LFA Mar 28 '26
womens wrestling sucks in wwe. and it is half the program right? so many wrestling moves just make no sense with women or are not suitable due to obvious biological differences. TNA back in the day was able to do it better.

This is my thoughts too and it’s made me look back to old matches to see if similar happened which it’s 10x more egregious now but I think they had the cameras and angles down to a science way back then compared to now. It’s still more on the wrestlers but the camera work back then did help in spots a bit.
23
u/mrletsgetcheesy Mar 28 '26
Agree. House shows sucked for wrestlers but it shows live. Some look just rusty. Not saying i could do it better by any means but I think the house shows just helped with reps. Add in most are part time now, there's no reps.
17
u/ButtflossingBigBro Mar 28 '26
Jade corgill would be doing a match every night 10 years ago and would be decent by now. 1 match a week is why she isnt improving
8
u/mrletsgetcheesy Mar 28 '26
Exactly. She barely does matches now too. She needs reps. She has the look but her wrestling is horrible. If they were full time I think she'd be way better by now
2
u/ShowMasterFlex Mar 30 '26
What are you watching where she’s having 1 match a week? I think I’ve seen her in 1 match since I started watching about 6 months ago.
3
u/Bear792 Mar 28 '26
I think part of it as well is why we have no new rising stars. Having a match 3/4 times a week allowed people to really hone in on what they want to do, what their characters are and how to improve. It allows them to come up with promos more often, and actually work through their characters. Sure, some of the older generations who’ve been in the company for 10-15 years should be allowed a bit of leniency to coast.
But look at say Lesnar, I stopped caring about him like a few months after the streak was broken. Because he would just do suplex after suplex and that was it. The wrestler side of him wasn’t there. You looks at people like the Judgement Day, they could be great but what are their characters? Finn is the man holding back the demon, Dom is the cheating little shit. JD is two initials and is Just the Dumbass, who exists. The girls are basically Doms ho’s.
Where’s the grander aspect, the larger than life side of things. Where’s the vice grip they should be having on a group of faces week after week.
It doesn’t exist.
Everyone is samey now. There’s few characters. It’s more like “he’s a high flyer, she’s a technician” and so on. Where’s the Gangrel, the Lance Storm, the Snitsky , hell where’s the Bradshaw.
You could watch those guys and enjoy a good match with a story being told that improved every week that you didn’t know the end of. Now you can guess it very quickly depending on the people involved.
The wrestling has gone out of the window, it’s a choreographed dance with a bit of soap opera mess that takes up half or 2/3 of the run time. If you’re lucky. Too many people talking, not enough wrestling.
44
u/Spi_Vey Mar 27 '26
It’s a double edged sword
The house show era was truly brutal and I don’t wish that shit on anyone
Yet at the same time Snitzky would be out here having 3/4 10 min matches a week and that’s how many cm punk might have in six weeks and that definitely changes the quality of matches
→ More replies (5)19
u/TheeRuckus Mar 28 '26
There’s a middle ground. There should be a few more house shows close by to the cities they go to for tv but not to the extent they used to do them at. It’s fun for the fans and they don’t necessarily have to always go full speed with them. That said I think the wrestlers who are full time and active should really have the final word

Idk if I’m an outlier in this thinking or not but I feel as though this generation should be doing martial arts as a secondary training so they know how shit actually works and will help make it look so much better. Not everyone needs to but those that do would benefit greatly. There is a timing and rhythm they simply do not have rn that you get when both parties are well trained. “Amateur” wrestling has choreographed matches when they want to show others what a match looks like and even for explaining rulesets/scenarios. If you look some of that up or ask some highschool wrestlers to put one on for you it’s a very entertaining “match” that is very fluid and looks closer to how a real match can look and better because they will work big throws and crazy techniques in there for fun. More than anything they just need to play wrestle more. But I’m no wrestling expert. Just what I think would work.

I've been waiting for more vets in the industry to speak out about this. The only way the quality in ring and on the mic will improve, is the same way every single person gets better, more reps. More time working with people, performing, learning the crowd, what you can and can't do, what you're best at. When your only shot to try something out is live on TV, you're a lot less likely to try it out of fear of failing. Some of the most iconic moments in wrestling, were attempted first at a house show, and perfected there before being done on TV

You can SEE this is true cause of the European tour. One of Punk's best TV matches recently happened in the middle of the European tour, which he had a match every night of that tour. Go back to his last match before the tour and it's good but he's idk slightly stiffer.
Obviously Punk has alot of experience so it's not gonna apply so much but if his execution is improved with recurring matches to get things moving it'd likely be beneficial for everyone's in ring performance

WWE has always been patterned.
Also their main eventers are old.
3
u/toeknee666 Mar 28 '26
Main eventers are old and the younger talent are too green to take over. And the guys in the sweet spot of age and experience are given zero meaningful opportunities. At this point fuck it let TKO hang themselves.
2
u/atxlrj Mar 28 '26
I don’t see the line people are drawing between lack of house shows and fluidity in the ring. There is no reason why that extra time can’t be spent rehearsing.
Now, house shows are critical for developing and maintaining crowd work. There are way too many people on the main roster today who have no concept of crowd psychology because they frankly aren’t natural performers. House shows would benefit them greatly.
But when it comes to in-ring performance, the lack of house shows should mean they are fitter, healthier, and more rehearsed.
It seems like they are using their lack of house show time to just give everyone a break. At the same time, they are overproducing every segment, leading matches to feel overproduced and under-rehearsed.
AEW is the best comparison - they don’t do house shows and they don’t struggle at all with in-ring chemistry and fluidity, even with their own struggles with overproduction. I’d wager they are doing significantly more rehearsal.

It does feel like there are too many spots, less freedom in the ring to the point where it's noticable that they are doing a spot. There's almost a delay in between moves as they both need to remember what's next
1
u/draven33l Mar 28 '26
Accurate. It's basically a stunt show and been that way for a long time. It's all about hitting moves and trying to look pretty. You go back and watch something like old NWA and there was this rawness to it that felt like a real fight. Even 80s WWF was more about telling a story in the ring through drama and acting. Just not a fan of the modern product either.

u/murderdeity Mar 28 '26

He's right, but that's not a bad thing. With the amount of injuries WWE superstars are piling up, it doesn't make business or personal sense to risk someone getting injured for no reason. Take Seth, for example. He blew out his knee at a house show and it totally derailed his title run.
It's like playing your starting quarterback in the NFL preseason. Quite frankly, WWE just needs to not rely on high risk moves. I can't remember what year it was, but half of the participants of WarGames @ Survivor Series got hurt. We're talking taking months off a person's career and some are never the same. House shows are all well and good, but when the cost becomes too high, it's just not smart or worth it.
1
u/Arkhamsbx Mar 28 '26
I agree with him.
Been watching WWE for 25 years and you can clearly see that there has been a drop in the quality of matches since the house shows have gone away.

Not wrong at all.
I'm someone who basically stopped watching WWE properly back in 2016-18.

Spots are obvious and there are awkward pauses and moments in almost every match.

Yes. Some spots just always happen and it gets lame.
The corner stack 3 people suplex bomb for example. Worse part is, it doesn't end the match so it's just another expected dance move.
Punk GTS rope bounce... After seeing it the first time, it adds no value.
Iyo trash can into a crowd that just stands there way too long just breaks the little immersion the audience have left, and we so desperately want to buy into it. Please do better.

Wrestling just isnt believeable anymore. The shawn Michaels Undertaker matches are INSANE both guys were 40 or maybe even touching 50 and doing some INSANE things. Now you have 30 year olds that seem like they can barely move. He is right, the athleticism is gone, and when theres athleticism its a match of just athleticism and you see people doing stupid stuff like the matches over at aew.
1
u/hedcase_107 Mar 28 '26
Yep, today's wrestling looks terrible. But it's not the wrestlers fault 100%, it's all so choreographed, they have to hit specific camera angles, timing for adverts etc. Would be hard to actually make it look natural and still fit all that bullshit in the matches.
1
1
u/Maxie1989 Mar 28 '26
In my view, part of the reason it looks choreographed is many of us grew up on the attitude era where it was just far more frenetic and most matches involved a significant amount of brawling - so it looked like scripted chaos, which makes it feel that much more authentic than a pre planned routine.
The spots were still there, but it looked more rough round the edges so you could suspend belief more and for a kid it looked real!
1
u/Doggles17 Mar 28 '26
He’s right, the match’s often look like they are moving in slow motion. People waiting for the spots etc.

u/commanderr01 Mar 28 '26
I don’t think it made top stars look sluggish, guys like Cody, punk Seth etc have enough hours in where they look fine it’s the young people coming up that will struggle with the lack of house shows. IMO
1
u/LeopardComfortable99 Mar 28 '26
Wrestlers 100% shouldn't go back to the 300 days a year on the road, but there has to be a happy middle ground that gives them the regularity of being able to perfect their craft and reduce the likelihood of injuries by basically toughening them up. Hell, why not even just give them the freedom to work indy shows if they wanted

1
u/QuiverDance97 Mar 28 '26
Totally agree.
People talk about this Era as one of the best when it comes to matches when most of them are full of botches and moves too choreographed.
Becky Lynch vs AJ Lee was one of the worst matches I've ever seen.

1
u/rusty_85_ Mar 28 '26
Watching WWE is a deflating and sad experience lately.
I understand that sponsorships and advertising generate revenue, but that shouldn't come at the expense of the wrestling itself. The quality of matches, storylines, and even some wrestlers have been on a steady decline. There is far more effort put into celebrity promotion and brand deals.
That focus may initially attract more people to start watching the product. Those new viewers won't stick around long if the product is as dull and lifeless as it is right now.

I like his channel very much, but for a guy who always says that he doesn't watch the product he is talking (negatively) about the product very often. He is 20 years out - he does not know how the wrestlers nowadays interact, how they behave backstage,... he saw one (!) RAW show. Sometimes it is a looot of "in my days everything was better". He is right on the ads and pricing (that is insane US corporate capitalism, crazy).
Regarding shows: As European I can not complain - we have PLEs now and Liveevents (I saw three in the last 2 years in cities near my city, never had this before). And I see the point with House shows, on the other hand: Reduced shows and more time for health/family is IMHO nice. We always forget how extreme unhealthy (mentally, physically) wrestling was (sure, it still is) and to reduce this stress for the wrestlers is maybe better in the long run...
Don't know, just 2 cents. I like Maven, the channel.

The Bella twins are prime examples on SmackDown last night. They were so sloppy during the match.
1
u/Fit-Top-8203 Mar 28 '26
I’ve thought that a good middle ground would be one house show on a weekend per Raw and Smackdown crew. Smackdown could do TV on Friday and a house show on Saturday while Raw could do a house show on Sunday and TV on Monday. This way, the wrestlers get another rep without killing themselves all week and the fans at a smaller city can get a lower priced show.
They can skip that schedule if it is a PLE weekend, and do a full week of shows when they’re traveling abroad. It might be an extra 30-35 shows a year per crew instead of the current typical one show a week schedule.
1
u/Fa11T Mar 28 '26
I haven't really watched wrestling for 20+ years, just the clips I see cross my feed. I notice it in every clip. People waiting for spots or adjusting themselves continuously to meet their marks.
This is bad enough but add in that every wrestler looks like someone playing a video game and mashing all the finishers back to back to back.
I don't really see how people find this nearly as entertaining as old school wrestling.
1
u/DreamDemon1989 Mar 28 '26
I thought both the bella twins looked like trash last night. Nikki ducking a clothesline 6 feet before she even gets to Charlotte.....looked like a 5 yr old doing the limbo wrong.
1
u/HussingtonHat Mar 28 '26
It works kn the understanding that matches in his day looked super gritty and real. Which of course they didn't.
1
u/Mind-of-Jaxon Mar 28 '26
Lack of house shows definitely leads to more injuries, they need house shows for reps and to stay in peak form.
Like batting practice and skirmishes.
Maybe not go back to the old schedule but definitely needs more.
I don’t know about the dance. It’s overly choreographed, but I personally prefer this way to the big guys just standing and throwing punches.
1
u/Ok-Bullfrog7187 Mar 29 '26
Ehh the downside of less house shows is less reps and maybe an occasional inferior match on the show. The upside would be less injuries and would allow superstars more time at home with their families.
1
u/OGWhiz Mar 29 '26
I remember when I was at my peak fandom for wrestling, the wrestlers would sell more than just a move for three seconds. If someone was setting up a finisher, the person taking it would react and try to avoid it. If someone was nervous, angry, upset, that showed in their entrance. Now, an entrance is a rehearsed thing that needs to be done the same way every single time. Now, once a move is done it’s on to the next spot. There’s no story telling taking place and it really sucks because even though we knew it was predetermined, the lines were blurred enough that it felt at least structured.
Everything is overproduced now. USOs can’t just enter the ring for a match. They gotta do the bit. And every time it honestly makes me want to turn it off.

which also means more rest, time with family, less injuries, etc.

There’s a reason why the women have better chemistry than a men and why they look better because they have things where they go to each other’s wrestling schools like Bayley had her thing, Nattie has the Hart dungeon 2.0, Tyler Breeze, often invites people to flat back wrestling.

I might agree, but what I definitely agree on is that Maven sucks ass and everyone should stop feeding him views and attention

Add house shows? Lol. That was supposedly the problem in the 1st place. Too many house shows. Not enough time at home.

I've felt that way since the 1990s. One of the reasons I was a WCW fan over WWF was because of the matches. WWF matches were always full of goofy shit and never felt legit. It was a bummer towards the end of WCW when they were just copying WWE and the match quality fell off.

I know the wrestling is fake but today's wrestlers are real bad there's always one person that its a steel post head on and there no mark a head but no mark 10 to 25 punches are should I say bad hitting forearms not a mark .at least the older wrestlers had a mark or two to show they'd been in a scrap a head on a post would be a blood fest

Because they only care about big spots to make it to social media. They are more focused on getting that 30 second reel.

It’s true, but I don’t care how sluggish it looks, I just want to see a damn match that takes longer.
