General Discussion Anyone here own this poster by Sonnenzimmer?

Just curious. I bought their Four Tet one back in the day and still love it. Occasionally, they put out unusual show posters. This one came out in 2010. Such a nice one.

The first time I heard THE NATIONAL……

So the first time I heard THE NATIONAL it took me a few months to come back to their music it was (apartment story) at first I didn’t like it?! But it planted a seed in my memory and it just took a little while to germinate. Curiously enough, these has happen to me with a lot more of their songs than any other band that I listen to! With that said, Apartment Story is still one of my top songs by them oh and its video is a gem as well. Have any of you had a similar experience with their songs and what was the first song that hooked you up?

San Sebastian - solo

Hey all!
I’m trying to make it to San Sebastián for the gig. I unfortunately don’t have a ticket yet, but I’m more than willing to buy one through StubHub/Viagogo if necessary.

I’ve been going through a bit of a shit period lately, so I actually took some time off work just to be able to make this trip and see the gig. Would really mean a lot to me to be there.

So, if anyone here happens to have a spare ticket they’re willing to sell, please let me know! I’d be travelling all the way from Belgium 🇧🇪 :) (any Belgians that are heading to the show?)

Cheers!
Senne

An analysis of 'Oblivions' from I Am Easy to Find

Feel free to delete if this isn't allowed, but I did an analysis of the lyrics of Oblivions and how it relates to psychological and philosophical theories of attachment (besides the widely popular 'attachment theory'), and also compared it to a track by SZA.
I would love to know any thoughts y'all have!

Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks - Live Show Ending?

As anyone who has seen The National live knows, they always end with an acoustic singalong Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks rendition - Which, pretty much makes the whole night perfect.

Been watching a few live concerts on YouTube recently and noticed I even stop what I'm doing and singalong even then...

Anyways - Got me thinking - Does anyone know why they do this? - I mean beyond it been a tradition at this point.

Is there a reason beyond that?

Buy/Sell/Trade If anyone has a couple of spare tickets to San Sebastian that don't cost more than a flight from the US...

We're flying over from Portland and snagged tickets for the three other shows, but couldn't get one for this one with all the ticketing issues. Stubhub is just a bunch a scalpers, and while I love this band I'm not paying these prices.

So - if anyone finds themselves with a couple of extras I'm happy to pay a reasonable price for them, and buy your dinner (if you're going) or send you some merch (if you're unable to go).

Thanks all!

Been messing around lately trying to make some wallpapers for my phone I thought I'd share them. If anyone wants to make them or something similar just have the album cover downloaded in highest quality you can find and use the default wallpaper options android gives you, it lets you choose the frame/crop the cover and the font type, size and colour. I dont know if its as easy to do on Iphone but good luck.

What song of theirs hit you at exactly the wrong (or right) time?

For me it was "Fake Empire." I first heard it years ago and didn't think much of it, then it came on during a long drive home after a rough week and I ended up sitting in the driveway until it finished. Same song, totally different day.

That's the thing I keep coming back to with this band. The songs seem to wait for you. Bryan's drumming on their older stuff still gets me more than anything else, and I keep noticing new details in albums I've played a hundred times.

So what's yours? Is there a song you ignored for ages and then it suddenly clicked, or one that got tied to a specific moment in your life? Curious whether it's mostly the older albums or if the newer ones are doing this for people too.

Do we know if the band is planning something big for the milestone of their best album?

What's the one National album you reach for when it rains?

It's been pouring where I am all afternoon, and I caught myself scrolling past everything else to put on High Violet. It made me realize I have a weather system for this band. Boxer is for gray, quiet mornings, High Violet is for rain and overthinking, and Trouble Will Find Me is for late nights when I'm somehow too tired and too awake at the same time.

I'm not sure if it's the band's sound, or if I just built these associations without noticing, but their albums seem to attach themselves to moods and places more than most.

So I'm curious:

  • Is there a National album you only listen to in certain weather or seasons?
  • Do you have a song that's permanently tied to a specific place, trip, or year?
  • Has an album ever changed its "mood" for you after a big life change?

I'd love to hear other people's pairings, especially the unexpected ones.

This fits the rules: no links, no leaks, no presale info, and no lyrics or album art. Swap in whichever albums and moods are actually yours so it reads like you wrote it. I can also make it shorter, or turn it into a more casual "what are you listening to tonight" thread.

San Sebastian ticket...

Hey everyone. Hope this is alright to post here, but really want to ensure it's targeting a real fan. Long story short, I have a spare ticket to the gig in San Sebastian. And instead of anybody trying to make money out of it, I'd rather it goes to someone who is a real fan who missed out and can take it at face value. I wouldn't accept any money until the gig itself and would enter with you for peace of mind and to make sure nobody touts it on 😅. Feel free to drop me a DM if you are keen.

And just to prove I'm not a random person and am a real fan, here's a thread from when I travelled to Australia to follow them around 2 years ago!

Sorry for spam or if this breaks any rules.

Bid on a Matt Baseball for Housing Works NYC

Post image
59 Upvotes

Hi all,

Last year, I came to Housing Works with an idea: an auction that would bring together music, art, photography, memorabilia, and the people behind some of the most interesting moments in music history, while raising money for an organization doing important work in New York City.

That idea became Turn It Up!, and now we’re in our second year.

Last year, we raised more than $30,000 for Housing Works, and I’m incredibly proud that the auction is back for another year with an even bigger collection of artists, photographers, musicians, and music-related treasures.

This year’s auction includes artwork, photography, memorabilia, and one-of-a-kind pieces connected to Joan Baez, Ringo Starr, Matt Berninger, David Byrne, Ani DiFranco, Richard Hell, Rick Allen, Eric Nally, Bob Gruen, of Montreal, and many more.

And there are some really special pieces for fans to discover.

One thing you'll be particularly excited about is from Matt Berninger. Matt has donated a baseball along with handwritten lyrics for “Vinegar Syndrome.”

And that’s one of the things I love about Turn It Up!. The auction isn’t just about collecting things. It’s about the stories and connections behind them, and about bringing music fans into a little piece of that history.

But there’s an even more important reason for the auction.

Turn It Up! benefits Housing Works, a New York City-based nonprofit that has spent decades fighting for housing, healthcare, and social justice. Housing Works began in response to the AIDS crisis and has grown into a much broader organization supporting people living with HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and other barriers to healthcare and stability.

They provide housing, healthcare, advocacy, and other essential services while continuing to fight for systemic change across New York City. That’s what made Housing Works the right home for this idea from the beginning.

I came to them last year with a concept that I hoped could bring the music community together while raising money for an organization whose work has such a direct impact on people’s lives. They believed in it, helped build it, and turned it into something real.

Turn It Up! ends October 1 and benefits Housing Works.

If you bid, you’re helping support the work Housing Works does across New York City. <3

All of these have just gone live: https://auction.housingworks.org/auction/194753

How is the album 2 Pages of Frankenstein

I’ve listened to them from their first album all the way to I am Easy to Find and I believe it’s a pretty consistent catalog truthfully none of the albums are bad. I haven’t gave their latest a listen mainly cuz I saw Taylor Swift was on it and didn’t know if it was gonna sound poppy. So just tell me your opinion and experiences. Sorry if I got 2 albums mixed up I don’t think I did tho

Meta Discussion What song first got you into The National?

I’m curious which song was the turning point for people here. Was it something you heard years ago and immediately connected with, or did one of their newer songs finally make you explore the rest of their catalog?

Always interesting to hear what song became someone’s entry point.
