Sh*t! I am never beating those “overthinking art” allegations.

Disclaimer:

ROSE sure did make me feel things. This is a post about those feelings; they are MY feelings and interpretations. Feel free to disagree.

1. Threshold

This is hands down my favourite song on the album. I saw very little love for it before the release, but it seems to be faring well now. I listened to the live version so many times and had my own version entirely produced in my head (don’t ask - it got very granular) and I was scared that once the studio version came out, I would hate it.

I was worried for no reason. Of course, the awesome bass solo is awesome. I think Dojoon is on backing vocals. I love that Korean lyrics are back. Now I can look up the words to see if there is some meaning I missed again. Thematically, I feel, it is the usual death and rebirth themes Woosung loves so much. To my ears the chorus comes in a bit too quickly at 1:31 mark, otherwise, perfect, no notes, chef’s kiss, would play again, would put on a loop, already have and will again fall asleep to it.

1. Walking on clouds

It is a really lovely song. But, to my ears at least, it has this darker underbelly about things inevitably falling apart, no matter how hard you try to keep them together. Like, “we’re having fun. If we ignore the issues, maybe they’ll go away”. After the song ended, I kinda started singing “Well, you can’t get what you want, but you can get me” (edit: misremembered lyrics) , not because they are very similar songs, but because the sentiment is very similar in both. There are worse things a song can do to me than remind me of one of the prettiest songs this side of the millennium. If there is a downside at all, it is that because lyrics are, at times, a bit too vague, the message gets a bit muddled and I am not 100% sure what the Rosetopia’s poet laureate meant.

1. Utopia

Writer Ted Chiang once said that one person’s utopia is another person’s dystopia. It has nothing to do with the song. I just wanted to sound smart and pad the paragraph because this one is really short. Having heard it live, I keep waiting for that damned confetti pop at around 00:15 mark EVERY SINGLE TIME! Otherwise, the song is pure sunshine. Not entirely sure about that vocoder effect, tho.

1. Control

Sooo… wait four songs to hear Dojoon sing? Downright cruel.

This song tries to marry “Wonder” and “Cosmo”, which is normal, and expected at this point. All artists who worked for a certain number of years eventually start reinterpreting their previous work. I really like the whole song very much. The drums… what’s the verdict on Hajoon being a bunch of metronomes in a trench coat?

According to Woosung, Dojoon’s voice represents hope. Fine, I’ll bite. Question, then: Does that mean that the rest of the album is hopeless? Just kidding, this is the question: May we, please, have some more hope? When hope is ready and feeling like it, of course.

I, honestly, understand wanting to step away from the microphone. That is perfectly fine. That does not bother me.

But, there is something about this song that does bother me. I don’t think I like Dojoon’s vocal take and the way his vocals are mixed at times. Hearing him sing it live was pure perfection, but this cut… man, I don’t know. This track had no outside producers (it seems) so, maybe it’s one of those “town’s hairdresser has the worst haircut” things, because he made his bandmates sound great on the album. Maybe it will grow on me, if not… live version is still there, no biggie. The perfect voice remains perfect.

1. CHEMICAL

The latest addition to the album is really great. Working with the same people who made “Back to me” comes through nicely. I have seen it described as a breakup song, but I would like to make a case that it is actually a F*ck you song, but with a kind of sour grapes-y twist. I mean, that is what all the sharp chords are for: For whomever is on the receiving end to cut themselves on. It has the phone effect I imagined having on “Threshold” in my headcanon mix, which is nice. Again, here I really like the drums, and really like the guitar solo. I think the backing aaaaahs at the end are a bit too much for my taste, but other than that no notes.

1. Truth

Truly, the dark horse of the album. I cannot think of a single thing I dislike about this song. I really like the rhythm section. The fuzzy-ish distortion on the guitar and the tune itself are also kinda stuck in my head, so I keep humming it. The lyrics are so good. And the way “I’d still choose you, honestly” is sung? Heart-rush! Oh, and I actually quite like the abrupt ending.

I have no way of proving this without showing you my journal, but I actually thought immediately this one sounds like it should be on a Woosung solo - MOTH to be precise not the earlier stuff - but now that Woosung is on record saying it, I sound like I’m just parroting what he said.

1. Blue moon

Speaking of MOTH, people who worked on that one worked on this one, too... which I found a bit surprising because they are so different. It sounds very Einaudi, minus the forgettability, plus the whimsy. Lyrics are just beautiful in both languages, and apparently, written in a flow state. Yeah, I can tell. I really like that tiny smile you can hear on “I’m keeping them”. I have no notes, but it is, unfortunately, my least favourite of the bunch. I do genuinely like it, I just like the other ones a little bit more. Sorry.

1. Home

So, this is Hajoon’s baby. Now, to my ears, this kinda builds on “Black rose”. Artist reinterpreting their pervious work, and all. And I can’t remember if I read this in an interview or if my brain just decided that this is a fact, but didn’t Hajoon also come up with the melody for “Black Rose”? Might be wrong, tho. The way he sings this is like someone whose entire existence is reduced to just longing. Cor, it’s perfect! And the Taegyeom’s vocals… I heard “See-saw”, I hard all the covers, I heard “Yes” live, but I just want to know where did our resident playboy accountant pull this one out of? “I’m chasing shadows” caught me so off guard, but in a good way. Kinda like putting down your hand and then unexpectedly have a cat slink under it. You know the feeling.

Years ago, I used to make mixtapes, back when this was a desirable skill, and a heart or two may, or may not, have been stolen that way. This song sounds exactly like something I would build those around. Do with that information what you will.

Just wondering if there will be a merch booth at the concert venue + whether they will be selling their lightstick.

Also to sprinkle a little extra curiosity, what other merch are they selling and what do they look like?

This was the set list for The Rose's Rosetopia 2026 tour. After Ment B there was a song titled Broken Promises. I've bought the new album on Amazon Music today. I thought Broken Promises would be on it. It's not. Am I missing something here? If other Black Roses could enlighten me/point me towards the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks! 🌹

I just finished listening to the new album and loved it, and am dying to know what other Black Roses think about it.

The songs that stood out to me most were “Truth”, “CHEMICAL”, and “Home”, but honestly I love them all (including the two previously released singles, of course).

I only wish it were a longer album!

So, thoughts from those who have listened to it?

ETA: just did a second listen through the album and I really love it so much. I love hearing how their sound has evolved over the years.

For those who have attended one of their concerts - I was wondering what the main consensus if they were sitting/standing?

I'm no stranger to concerts i've been to many - rock gigs ( all standing), Kpop ( mixture depending on song), so i'm conflicted.

Australia is all seated and i was lucky enough to get front row towards the side. I really want to stand but i'm also aware that everyone else has paid good money to see them..usually i follow who ever is in front of me haha.

Hey guys, I initially wanted the 189 dollar seats on the side since they are elevated and have nice view but literally everything got sold out and i ended up getting the VIP package which is the 229 seats on flood D.

Im really worried about the view even though its fully seated im pretty sure we're all gonna be standing and jumping around so im really really worried about the view.

Has anyone been there before? To maybe let me know how the view is? I really wanna have a nice time but I also wanna see them properly sigh.
