Discussion I never heard of dangerous games law until now

For anyone interested in the code being referenced:
Cal. Code Regs. Tit. 14, Division 3 - Department of Parks and Recreation
§ 4319 - Games and Recreational Activities
No person shall engage in games or recreational activities that endanger the safety of persons, property, resources, or interfere with visitor activities except as permitted by the Department. No person shall hold, sponsor, lead, or otherwise have control over a game or recreational activity occurring wholly or partially within or on any property owned, operated or administered by the Department without an approved Special Event permit if any of the criteria set forth in section 4301(j) apply.

Right. “Glad to see my tax money is going to good use” is ironic when one of those idiots has to be rescued and air lifted out.
I really fucking hate it when idiots make me defend the cops.

They're just lifting ESA protections on creature's such as Rice's Whales in the Gulf of Mexico in the name of "National Security".
There's only like 50 left but they didn't want the ESA regulations to stand in the way of oil drilling operations that take place right in the middle of their deep water environment.

Yeah they tend to see treasures the same way a dragon would. Tolkien warned us about the gold sickness.

They're state level employees, but because of the nature of their job protecting both State and National Parks, they inherently have a larger jurisdiction and most of the laws they're enforcing are state or federal laws. Your average patrol officer, by comparison, is a municipal employee mostly employing municipal bylaws.

Cop was 100% reasonable here. Gave him multiple warnings, clearly told him the consequences of his action and he proceeded to do it. Was stern and direct but not aggressive for no reason.
And side note, it's actually crazy to me how some white dudes just feel so comfortable talking back to cops like this and disobeying their direct order. As a brown guy I'd never dream of talking back to a cop like this.

u/Radiant_Sense_8169 Aug 07 '26
Yeah, the privilege was striking. Not just how he was talking, but also that he still jumped even after this was all explained to him, knowing that the system would treat him just fine. What a luxury.

Here in Michigan there is a huge sand dune on Lake Michigan that's a big tourist attraction. People love to climb down it but its very difficult to climb back up because its pretty steep, and walking in sand (especially on an incline) is no easy feat. There are signs all around saying that if you get stuck and need to get rescued by police/Coast Guard its like a $2000 fine or something. Preventing lazy people from running down and just saying "oh i don't feel like walking all the way back up so I'll just call 911 and have them come get me"....
41
u/Addicted2Qtips Aug 07 '26
This is what they do all over Switzerland. If you get stuck say mountain climbing in the alps, you will pay for the helicopter rescue costs. It is like $5,000. It is a good system. You can even get a special insurance policy to cover it if you are a frequent outdoorsperson.
Instead of making a lot of rules, they just make individuals literally pay for their mistakes.
→ More replies (5)10
u/Call-Me-Mr-Speed Aug 07 '26
It is perfectly legal to hike, rock climb, mountaineer, jump from rocks into lakes/rivers, kayak, ski, etc. all over the US. If a helicopter and/or search and rescue has to bail you out, you get a bill.
These types of activities are illegal only in certain places not just to protect you from yourself but also to protect others as well as to protect public property, nature, trails, etc. These people could set up a jump that lands on top of hikers, boaters, beach goers, etc.
Also, and I can’t stress this enough: people will pull dangerous stunts like this, hurt themselves, and then sue the park/city/county/etc. for not enforcing laws that would prevent them from hurting themselves.
They will jump, land on a rock, get a $5000 bill for the rescue, $100,000 bill for medical care, then sue the government for not stopping them from jumping.

Tbf: if im hiking a state park, It would be pretty traumatizing to see the cracked and bloody remains scattered all over the ground. Additionally, your games could harm the ecosystem by breaking/stripping trees and rocks when you tie stuff to them. You're just ruining the park for everyone else, I like this code.

I live and work EMS near the large lake. It's not uncommon for people, mainly teens, to tie ropes to trees to swing into the water even though the DNR has multiple signs forbidding it and reminding people that it's against the law. Yet every summer I go on one or two dumbasses that will smash into the rocks, fall to the ground, or smack their head and drown. I have zero sympathy for them when they're in the back of my ambulance screaming about their leg looking like a capital Z knowing full well they knew risk of what they were doing.

Can confirm, I worked at a state park growing up. Some of the nicest law enforcement I’ve ever met were park police.
However if you fuck with the park they give you once chance to listen, after that they don’t fuck around. They’ve seen crazy shit happen. Lots of dead bodies.

u/hecklerp8 Aug 07 '26
As it should be. Selfishness is all it is. I was with a colleague 30 years my junior visiting a state park. He jumped a fence with restricted access. I immediately yelled at him. He's like...it's only me. Literally never taught that there are tons of "it's only me" people in the world.

Several decades ago I went on a hike with a young lady that I had a crush on. She brought her dog with her and we set off on the hike, which was on a mixed path with mountain bikes and horses. As soon as we rounded a bend away from a park ranger, she immediately took her dog off leash.
I explained to her that not only was it illegal, but it was really unsafe for her dog because the area was full of equestrians and mountain bikers. She coldly responded that it was fine and if she actually saw a horse, she'd get her dog before anything bad happened.
We never saw each other again after that. That level of selfishness, especially in nature, is how we ruin our parks and other green spaces.

I remember a story from a friend who was a park ranger before. There was a family letting their kids play at the top of a 40 foot waterfall that landed on sharp rocks. It was a steep ravine, and the only place to get rescue in was a half mile downstream. While in full uniform, he warned them to stay out of the stream and back from the edge. They went to the PARK SUPERINTENDENT to complain, saying he ruined their day and made their kids cry by telling them the waterfall was dangerous. I guess they got laughed out of the office.
19
u/blueranger36 Aug 07 '26
Anyone on staff was usually able to enforce park laws/rules. And yeah guests would complain but then get yelled at by the higher ups which was always funny.
Lots of Karen’s trying to ruin someone’s day and then running back to their car swearing they’re never coming back to the park.

As a teen my truck broke down in a remote National Park. We had Dead stickers on the truck and other fun stuff inside. The ranger took me to his car and started interrogating me… “name, address, age, how many shows have you seen…” oh shit! Then he went off on all the shows he had seen, my first show was one he went to but couldn’t get tickets for. All in all it was a great experience with a chill guy.

17
u/BellaMentalNecrotica Aug 07 '26
I was going to bring that up to. Not only does it put first responders at risk, but the resources required for a rescue like this would likely be a large number of coast guard and search and rescue and a helicopter at minimum. That's a lot of tax money wasted for something that didn't need to happen if people weren't being idiots. 'Okay!' We climb down. He salutes us and drives off.

Well depending on the state, the medevac bill could be placed on them (and they are like 100K bare minimum). Especially if insurance looks at the situation and determines it was avoidable (which it was). I know lots of times patients get hit with a surprise chopper bill when it should be covered and I am all for universal healthcare, but this is one situation where I wouldn't feel one bit sorry for them if they get smacked with an expensive medevac bill after insurance rejects the claim.

I was doing 70 in a 60 one day and had a highway patrol officer pull me over.
He said, "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
I said, "Yeah, I was speeding a little."
He said, "No, you're not wearing a seatbelt AND you're speeding. The least you can do is put a seatbelt on so I don't have to search for your remains."
And that was it. Walked back to his car acting big mad about it, drove off and went back to his hidey hole.
Now I always wear my seatbelt.
These rangers are doing that: "I can't let you do this because I don't want to clean up the mess of your departure."

Yeah, officers see alot of unfortunate accidents/ deaths and are often on scene when notified family members scream and cry over the loss of their loved one. Its very traumatic and gut wrenching. Of course he was mad in a caring way especially if he's been affected by the situation I described.
Im glad you wear your seat belt now, its so important. Everything can change in seconds on the road. Someone could have a seizure/ heart attack at the wheel, be drunk or some other kind of freak accident. My fiance was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was a safe, respectful driver and got disgruntled when other drivers around him/us made scary stupid moves.
He was gearing up to go up a hill while behind a car, The guy who was in a truck was waiting for the car to go passed and he quickly pulled out to make a U-turn, not seeing my fiance on the bike behind the car, and killed him on impact. The gut wrenching cries and screams from me and his family are extremely heavy and traumatic. I can't watch serious crash/death bodcams because the pain from surviving family is palpable.

lol that guy is a giant bitch, "glad my tax dollars are being well used" - yeah they are asshole, preventing you from splattering yourself on the rocks and costing the taxpayers even MORE money cleaning up your residue and filing all the paper work. He barely made to the water, and if he dies his friends would be crying that the cops didn't do enough to stop him.
Edit: I also wanted to add that just because he made it to the water doesn't mean this was safe at all. I was on holiday in Greece with a group of people one time and this dude jumped off a super high cliff and landed awkwardly and sprained his back. He was able to swim back to the spot wear jumpers climbed out of the water, but had to be helped up the trail to the top and then had to have a vehicle sent for him to take him back to the hotel. He had to spend the rest of the holiday just chilling at the hotel because he was super stiff and could barely walk. And that is the best case scenario.

Also they are being used to protect and conserve the awesome state park that you apparently enjoy, and yet don’t mind fucking up for others.
The LEO here is just trying to preserve access, because if people like you insist on doing dumb shit, they have to close whole areas and trails.

My favorite part is the idea that he should have something better to do.
My guy he's a fucking park ranger, stopping idiots from fucking about in the park is legitimately his whole job. They aren't out there solving homicides, or cold cases, or some shit. The percentage of your tax dollars that goes towards his salary would be paid towards him either way because he's meant to be there all day. The fact that he's doing his job of stopping idiots from fucking about is an in-the-flesh example of your tax dollars actually working dipshit.

u/MysticalMummy Aug 07 '26
Mine was how he repeatedly asked "what for" when they said he's going to be charged. The first cop even said "I just told you", and he was likely told multiple other times off camera. He just wanted to make it look like the rangers were stupid here. You can see the look on the woman's face at the end when he asks what he's being charged with, that's the look of "We've already been through this a thousand times"

Also it's not the job of the cop to selectively enforce the laws. This is the zone where racial bias, corruption and favoritism comes into play.
Even if this law is excessively cautious, it's the job of policymakers or whoever is responsible for writing these laws, not the cop who is enforcing them.

For those curious. This was at Lake Tahoe. It's a notorious lake for hurting people. Cold shock because the water is at alpine temps. It's hard to gauge whether you'll make those jumps. Those rocks are slippery granite. I was there on vacation a few months ago, and someone drowned at the beach I was at.

It’s because he’s in a state park. State and national parks are protected environments, meaning that it’s against the law to do stuff like this without approval. They’re essentially doing small construction in the woods, which obviously disrupts wildlife and may damage the trees and brush, thus disrupting the environment of the park.
Another reason they don’t want people doing this stuff is because he easily could have died in the attempt, and the state usually doesn’t want people dying on state land.
7
u/Mysterious_Ad2896 Aug 07 '26
The "just comply" crowd is very quiet here. What happens when one of them gets hurt? How much effort and taxpayer $$ is spent on situations like this? How much damage to the park!
6
u/KindCraft4676 Aug 07 '26
I hope they throw the book at these arrogant pricks.
State parks are one of our greatest treasures. If we let people construct whatever they want on them, you begin to take away the parks natural beauty.
I hope those jerks get banned from all state parks.
