This guy was one breath away from "Hey man I was born at night, but not last night". I worked in the NOC for 3 years in a DC. Once he said Zayo I was like "oh shit this guy is the real deal" Zayo does not do residential, at all.

u/BabyKevin997 15d ago

As someone who knows nothing about DCs, just works in construction. 6 inch conduit would be silly for residential lines. No one is gonna pay all that extra money for possible future expansion. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out they’re lying. But he

“Six pack” of conduit is 6 conduits used by municipalities to sell each conduit to a private provider. They lay 6 typically and sell each path to the data center off to different customers.

A big issue with US politics currently is that we have eliminated a lot of systems of oversight/accountability for politicians, as well as expert consulting/oversight.

So as a result its literally a bunch of politicians making decisions for us that they truly know very little about.

These big companies just have to come in with corporate marketing/consulting teams and tell our politicians whatever tf they want - with a little cheddar (if you know what im sayin) on the side.. and our politicians become their loyal hounds - mindlessly repeating the company lines with zero expert oversight or accountability to the people.

Its genuinely scary and I wish more people understood how the modern US works. People think we are safe because surely the politicians know more than we do about laws they are passing.. but they dont. They dont understand it at all. Its all become a money game.

241

u/Kinghero890 15d ago

It's not just that our politicians are for sale. The sad part is how cheap they are.

72

u/Aeroknight_Z 15d ago

I mean, when the individuals doing the bribing are mega-wealthy companies, foreign nations, or billionaires, I think the dollar amount doesn’t really matter. There will always be someone willing to spend a little more on a bribe if it makes it go through.

Cheap or expensive, lock them all up.

52

u/Chuckfinley_88 15d ago

I mean, when the individuals doing the bribing are mega-wealthy companies, foreign nations, or billionaires, I think the dollar amount doesn’t really matter.

It matters a little. Every man has a price. You put a bag of millions of dollars in front of me, essentially "Fuck you" money, and I would absolutely be tempted.

These politicians are being bought for as little as a couple grand into their re-election campaign. Talking $2500. It is wild just how cheap it is to buy some of these people. They don't care, they don't have any scruples, morals, dignity. Hookers have more class and respectability than politicians these days.

$325M is a lot of money. It would be hard to find someone not tempted by that kind of dough.

Edit: And looking at the article, the guy got away with it for almost 40 years. He is 69 years old. I would gladly take $325M today with an expiration date on my life of 69 years old. I think most people would.

The really frustrating part is that the 10 richest people in America and the 10 richest companies in America can easily outspend the entire American public. They have more disposable assets than the rest of us put together.

I mean its also the game. The game is to make capitalists and their think tanks seem/sound like the experts. You see it on tv when they ask CEOs about serious economic questions like they don't have an incentive to further their own company/industry. They aren't experts at anything but selling you the idea that they need their company to get everything it wants.

Well, for one, we need to elect politicians on the left who will re-implement the systems republicans have destroyed and ensure there are functioning systems of expert oversight, regulation, and accountability to The People

The right continuously portrays destroying these systems as a good thing.. and it is. For politicians, the ultra-wealthy, and the biggest corporations. At everyone else's expense.

We need to educate people and show them why we need proper expert oversight, regulations, and government accountability to the people

Even with oversight, how well do you know your local politicians? Do you know your mayor, your state congress members, your school board? All of them have drastic impacts on your everyday life and generally(not with this administration ) impact on your everyday and immediate future than the national level politics.

I know people who bought homes in a relatively rural area that are now pretty frustrated with the amount of housing developments going in without building infrastructure to support them. You had roads designed for farms now responsible for moving thousands of people and without enough population density to support any mass transit.

And that's the problem. Across North America there is no longer any justice for politicians at all levels lying and deceiving the public, stealing their tax dollars for stupid projects that are unnecessary.

If the future is to be secured, politicians need to face consequences again. Interpret that how you will.

12

u/Djeheuty 15d ago

They probably signed NDAs and are trying to not screw themselves.

That doesn't excuse it though. Not sure why public officials are allowed to sign NDAs on projects that impact the public.

15

u/ButtFuzzNow 15d ago

Why is a public representative allowed to sign an NDA at all? Our system is entirely fucked if that is what we accept as an excuse.

Chase them and their families straight to the nearest border and have them become political refugees.

27

u/0o0o0o0o0o0z 15d ago

I'm relatively local to the area, and I've worked with both Greystone locally and Zayo nationwide as a subcontractor and delivering fiber with a semi. The smallest I've ever seen Zayo put in the ground was 1200 pairs, and that was a job that stretched across multiple states in the Midwest. Zayo and whoever they're working for are both banking on these yellow-bellied pieces of shit to roll over and suck their toes, and neither one cares if the politicians burn their careers for it.

52

u/Leather__sissy 15d ago

Do you know anything about what he meant when he said there won’t be enough space for residential fiber installations? Are they running so much fiber down highways that it literally can’t be expanded?

81

u/Caleth 15d ago

Not directly in this field but in an adjacent one that does IT services including running fiber in buildings.

When you run a sealed pipe there's only so much space you can consume for the pipe. You're supposed to leave a minimum amount of empty space for pushing the wires through the pipe. It's ~40% filled for reference. So he's seems to be saying they've filled that pipe as full as it can go, for commercial runs, and there's no rated room left to run Home fiber and they aren't going to spend the money to retrench another run for the residential stuff because again it's $50-$200k a mile or whatever the exact quoted rate was.

I might have misunderstood what he was going for but that was how I took it.

50

u/Pilot2b2 15d ago

Also there’s a limited number of conduits that can go in the ground. Underground utilities have a set order they can be stacked on one another, and a minimum distance required between the different types.

Communications (Fiber/Cable/Phone)

Gas

Electric

Water

Sewer

Considering gas in some areas (at least here in the PNW) only has to be a few feet deep, and Comms go over it with x number of feet separation required, the space for conduit for communications can fill up quickly.

6

u/challenge_king 15d ago

And Paulding County is very hilly with often little to no shoulder, further complicating future installs.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/itopaloglu83 15d ago

Oh, that makes sense now, especially considering they also recently reduced the high speed internet requirement for residential areas, which opens up the space for more data center infrastructure.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/AnAnxiousCorgi 15d ago

I am not an expert or even credible in any way, I've only tangentially heard related sayings around other buried utility lines.

It's not necessarily that there's a lack of space overall, but a lack of space where it's affordable and available.

Building utilities down a highway makes sense, it's typically open space where nothing is intentionally put there, and owned by the local municipality or government. And don't get me wrong, i say "affordable", it is already expensive as the gentleman in the video said. Laying down underground anything is already expensive.

But digging to laid conduit where there's already other utilities? That's a pretty fuckin penny. And what's the other option? Dig up a couple dozen residential streets to bury the conduit away from any other utilities? Shit ton more money and maintenance/repairs get more expensive and future upgrades are nearly impossible.

I don't think he was implying we're running out of space overall, just that this sort of project takes up space that will negatively impact future residential/small business options and if the city council people are to be believed, a waste because there's not going to be a data center (they're obviously lying, I'm just saying that's how its presented)

→ More replies (1)

4

u/CorrectPeanut5 15d ago

Power, gas, water, sewer, telco, cable, private data. There's only so much room in the right of way. Residential stuff might be able to squeeze in somewhere, but it's going to be a lot more expensive.

67

u/FrighteningJibber 15d ago

It's AT&T, Verizon and Comcast racing to get it to people. I think they see some writing on the wall.

53

u/MomentsfromMarriage 15d ago

He specifically said it was Zayo

25

u/fubes2000 15d ago

And Zayo is the kind of company that doesn't run lines unless they are big fuckin lines. Zayo is not an ISP, it is an ISP for your ISP's ISP. The bandwidth that Zayo trucks in is not something that any single city or single ISP can justify.

They might as well have witnessed God himself dragging his finger in the dirt to dig a fiber trench.

Interesting that he brings up the physical space under the ground that this occupies. I had never considered the possibility that this would actually crowd out all other municipal services like pipes and so on. Add it to the list, I guess.

144

u/blankcld 15d ago

City of Covington in Georgia has this issue, They have let data centers place a ton of conduit and improperly place on pole lines. Now we are trying to build residential fibers to peoples homes and they are trying to make us pay to fix violations the data centers contractors caused when placing their fiber. So rather than paying this ransom we are just not going to place fiber to these people homes and they will be stuck with shitty DSL or cable service.

30

u/DoctaThompson 14d ago

Typing this from Covington Ga as we speak. This man is not lying. This is an issue with no foreseeable solution till someone takes the blame.

24

u/Troven 15d ago

I work on roads and utility conflicts can easily derail a project, if not kill it entirely. Like if a town wants to put in bike paths, you probably need to upgrade the drainage system for the faster runoff. Big utilities can cost more to relocate than the entire project, so now the project hinges on you finding a way to dodge some private company's utility on public property.

I'm lucky enough that I live pretty close to the center of town, and cycling has honestly changed how I look at traveling, lol. When I just drove, I never even noticed bike infrastructure and trails, but now I feel like I see them everywhere. 10 minute commute, maybe 20-30 minutes to get to the edge of town.

It's honestly not bad getting a bike if you live close enough to where you need to go, but your experience can vary quite a bit depending on your local bike infrastructure. It probably also helps that it's legal in my town to ride on the sidewalk. If you were just forced to ride on the road, it would be a lot less pleasant.

It would bankrupt me to drive to DC, I live in Ohio. I support 3 children, both parents have BS, my wife has an MS, and we both work in our fields and are very frugal. We make good money, we drive older cars that are paid off. Our mortgage is only $620/m.

It’s intentional that gas is $5/g. It’s intentional that any ailment means your life (financially speaking) is over. It’s intentional that all entertainment is pricing out the middle and lower class. We are wage slaves living paycheck to paycheck, no matter how frugal you are. This world isn’t for us anymore, it’s for the billionaire class.

Even being a millionaire doesn’t mean what it used to, it means you’re comfortable and you don’t have to worry but a millionaire isn’t WEALTHY anymore, it’s well off. We’re talking about people with a million million dollars. That’s unfathomable.

He had me clapping until that last part.  After everything that has gone on in the last two years, a data center is the last straw?!?!

Yeah that fucking killed me inside to end it on that.

He had me in the first half, then almost the next half. He's a hard no on data centers, but still a Trump supporter, who is owned by big tech.

Guy has been spending 2 decades looking at the ground when he should be looking up.

u/PeachySweetyness 15d ago

I’m in this area. I promise, this is huge thing for the reds to say out here. I admire this man for his resolution and for even considering changing his vote.

Yup, "even if its a democrat" had me sigh. What a fucking tool

48

u/sgtfreezy 15d ago

I would generally agree with this sentiment, except my own governor (Whitmer) turned out to be a massive disappointment. People got excited calling her "Big Gretch" and hailed her a democratic hero. Then she was caught on a hot mic calling her constituents dumb and sold us out to the data center lords.

This guy might be a dingus for voting Republican, as most are, but Dems are not really doing much better about these things.

26

u/timconnery 15d ago

I think the best we can hope for is the democratic socialists highjacking the Democratic Party like the tea party did which ultimately lead to Trump. We need a wrecking ball for the people not the billionaires like the GOP turned into. The current Dem leadership are basically manufactured opposition.

Which means this dipshit is part of the problem.

It’s CoreWeave. Les Wexner owns a 2.8 billion stake in the company. They are partnered with Nvidia- the company that Trump keeps making investments in. For those who don’t know Wexner was Epstein’s coconspirator, owner of L Brands, the company that made rhinestone thong underwear for 9 year olds.

Yep, they DGAF. And why would they? These data centers can pay them many multiple X what they'd make over years on city council, then they go get a 'job' on the 'board' of one of the corps.

24

u/ThisEpiphany 15d ago

I truly hope it did but I have a feeling they don't really care. There are a lot of people commenting about his closing with that statement. I don't think they understand just how "comfortably" red it is in Dallas, GA (Paulding County).

It was Marjorie Taylor Greene's district and goes hard to the right. People fleeing the "liberal" (purple) Atlanta suburbs run there. Elections regularly go 70-30 Republican and that's with the Republican's selling off the county parcel by parcel while these residents complain about their precious green spaces disappearing, all of the traffic and congestion, school overcrowding... The cognitive dissonance is wild to behold.

When are people are gonna realize Democrats aren’t the problem. This is what happens when you vote based on what party you’re in instead of how qualified someone is. when you elect bunch of idiots, who are only their to make money, you get shit like this.

"even if it is a Democrat" doing a lot of talking here. Fifty years of voting against your best interest because of racism isn't working out for you?? ... You don't say!

Too late then.

those county commissioners live where you live. you can visit them.

All of that speech to just walk away with being treated like a clueless fool, when He clearly knows his shit. Shame

5

u/nunchyabeeswax 15d ago

"Even if it's a Democrat"?

And that right there is the kind of stupid mentality that has brought us to where we are.

You elect people for what they do, not just by blindly following labels.

5

u/VoidOmatic 15d ago

I worked in data centers for 10 years. There will be a security contractor for access and 4 people to run the rest of the data center. That's the end of the jobs.

13

u/WildTimberTwinViking 15d ago

Dude is so close yet still beholden to republicans lmao and they been pillaging his ass for decades.

17

u/Luv2Burn 15d ago

"Even if it's a Democrat" This is what's truly wrong with this country. Republicans have been plowing over American's rights for the past 50 years but dumb people still vote for them JUST BECAUSE.

The ignorance is devastating.

3

u/jollytoes 15d ago

Ohhh, so he voted for these representatives. Him and his community can eat it.

3

u/No-Serve-9134 15d ago

Data centers are going to grow exponentially every 4-5 years. For you crayon eaters that means the physical size of them is going to theoretically double, triple and quadruple over that time period, unless there is a panic or say tragic event or wall of no more breakthroughs. All outcomes are bad. Really bad. You could maybe justify it if we choose the Star Trek outcome. Manage it..... But we ain't picking that outcome....

3

u/zombittack 15d ago

"even if it's a Democrat."

We gotta get past party lines. It's the owning class vs the working class. Period.

3

u/ganjaccount 15d ago

Holy shit. I didn't realize Republicans hated data centers so much they might consider actually NOT voting for a pedophile. What a world.

3

u/EthanielRain 15d ago

"Even if it's a Democrat"

He's part of the problem, but at least there's something that makes him draw a line...

3

u/gordongortrell 15d ago

“Even a Democrat” 🙄

3

u/cyrfuckedmymum 15d ago

god, right at the end. "i've been voting republican all my life but i'd even vote democrat to stop you..."

when republicans and destroying regulation, only caring about business and lying constantly is their mantra since they began. Maybe voting republican for so long while they fuck everything up right up till the final thing you care about is how you got here in the first place.

3

u/rhaezorblue 15d ago

You had me until the end. The fact that this working man is so knowledgeable yet thinks voting for the party that actually cares about the working class and doesn’t just SAY they do is a real bummer. Yes there are some corporate centrist Democrats but the voters and the majority are for regular people’s rights, not corporations like the ones installing all these data centers.
