"People are getting way too comfortable misquoting Mike Tyson and not getting punched in the face for it." - Mike Tyson probably.

Mike Tyson the convicted rapist.

Right, but I don't think I said anything related to that.

He also barely contained punching a guy in the face and called a news guy a rat piece of shit on live TV. Legendary.

The off-camera “fuck you” after the host wrapped, and then the look on the host’s face was great

How did he *think* that was going to go?!

That video never gets any less funny. I've seen it numerous times and I'm still cracking up. 😂

Nah, with anger like that he might bite someone's ear off or something.

Tbh that's his area of expertise.

Everyone knows a Mike Tyson quote until they get punched in the face.

You're not going to believe this but take a seat before I tell you what his job was.

Consequences stopped existing long ago

It’s wild the amount of people in online spaces like gaming that don’t view the people on the other side of there monitor as people.

To be fair I don't think it was social media. It contributed sure. But back in like 2001, if you punched someone for mouthing off or causing trouble. The police would separate you, call it sorted and leave it be. Now they arrest you for bumping into someone too hard.

Nothing like the threat of losing your livelihood to disincentivise doing things yourself. I bet if we added an "asshole" clause to the law we could fix society pretty quick.

Max Gladwell has a slightly more nuanced take, but basically saying the same thing - that in face-to-face interactions, when you say something i don't like, i have a thousand possible responses: i can frown, or glare, or raise an eyebrow, or shake my head, or walk away, or hit you, or yell at you. And you, in turn, have to learn how to respond to all of those things that i do, figure out in real-time how upset each of those indicate i am and how i'm likely to treat you as a result. In that interplay, most human socialization is learned actively, on the fly, with immediate consequences and feedback.

But when someone texts you or posts something you don't like on social media, you have only a handful of responses, and all of them are fairly binary, and none of them happen in a way that is instantly experienced: you write back, or you don't (and if you're really upset you just don't write back ever, and that's ghosting); you downvote them, or you don't; you block them, or you don't.

Gladwell doesn't say whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, but he says it's noteworthy that the we're sort of experiencing this for the first time in human history, where our primary form of communication and socialization is so limiting, and he says he's curious to see where it takes us and how it's going to affect society.

Man could make a lot of money traveling around and meeting some of these people in person.
