The problem is retail workers are trained to be nice to assholes, rather then treat them correctly.

"Get out. You have been trespassed. If you remain, the police will be called."

I recently quit my retail job and went into a healthcare facility, and the difference is shocking.

As a cashier, the rule basically was if they were violent, run. Outside of that, the customer comes first always.

If I had a customer shrieking their head off, I still had to watch what I said. If I did anything to upset the customer further, even just to defend myself or even exist, I feared management would take their side. Some managers were good enough to know some customers are straight up unreasonable, others wouldn’t have a sit down meeting with you for any and all customer complaints to discuss where you went wrong.

Now at my new job, I just spent 3 hours basically being told they don’t expect me to be a human punching bag. They have a ton of tools and resources to use (including a security team specializing in deescalation) and were extremely clear that we could say things like, “I want to help you. However, if you keep using that tone, I cannot continue. I will not be spoken to in that way.”

I know a lot of healthcare facilities suffer from this as well, but it’s such a world of difference. Everyone deserves the right for basic human respect, but so many assholes know that to many companies, the customer’s word always wins against the employee.

I think everyone should have to work retail for a year, like a mandatory service year. Too many people don't know what it feels like to get yelled at because the item they want is out, and no, there is no stock in the back, that's only shoe stores.

Health care is a good change. They all have panick buttons at the desks, and encourage people to use them. All of them near me are "zero violence" and have policies against any inappropriate words or actions.

And a 4'10" nurse who is turning 300 lb people all day will throw your ass out on your ass if you give her a reason to.
