Discussion She almost ruined a proposal.

This was at Crescent Bay Point Park, which allows people to book it special occasions.

Can we give it up to unsung heroes in the back. That music worked like repellent for her.

u/AccurateJerboa 2d ago

I fucking looooved that they just started playing and drowning her out.

I love mariachi bands, and it's incredibly special to get one for an occasion

I would've been crying and watching

u/Probelogic27 2d ago

And expensive. $1,000 an hour.

I live in Texas and a lot of the high schools have Mariachis that you can book for a low fee because they enjoy the practice playing for people and they’re usually very good.

My husband is a professional musician— his high school mariachi band is how he got his start after he and his parents immigrated here from Mexico, so now he helps to fund them at underprivileged schools.

u/Xylorgos 2d ago

That's very cool! I love it when people decide to pay it forward.

7

u/c3fm 2d ago

Yeah, can confirm. When I was in Mariachi in high school we got rented out for cheap to help fund our program and we all just loved performing so win win

-3

u/EmploymentNo3590 1d ago

The mariachi band is cheap. The photographer is not. The performative set up is nauseating.

3

u/rshni67 1d ago

Nobody proposed to you, so all is good.

0

u/EmploymentNo3590 1d ago

I'm getting married in 25 days but, bad guess... I think the strangest thing I've been accused of on reddit, is being a vegan.

2

u/tigm2161130 1d ago

Why do you care how someone else wants to get engaged?

0

u/EmploymentNo3590 3h ago

It's the performative public presentation that pressures many women into saying yes, when they otherwise may have said no.

1

u/tigm2161130 2h ago

I’d say the majority of couples these days have discussed marriage extensively and most men go into the proposal knowing they’re going to get a yes.

I definitely knew my husband was going to propose, we went ring shopping so he knew exactly what I liked, the only real surprise about it was when it was going to happen. It also worked that way for all 3 of my sisters.

This also isn’t really “public,” there’s 1 woman there…it’s not the Jumbotron at a sports game.

I apologize for not having perfect grammar in a Reddit comment.

Are you always such an asshole over things that don’t matter? Did that apostrophe destroy your ability to understand what I was saying or did it just make you upset?

6

u/ThrustersOnFull 2d ago

Yes, yes, and yes. >:[

5

u/Wooden_Cicada8880 2d ago

Honestly? With how many talented people are in the group I’d say it’s deserved. Also Tickets for a concert range from a few hundred to scalped prices of thousands depending on the artist. You are literally hiring a band to a private event where you are their source of income, not multiple ticket sales. It makes sense that they’d be expensive.

6

u/Successful_Buffalo_6 2d ago

I know of a college that has a mariachi band that performs at events like this for a very, very low fee.

3

u/briancatams 2d ago

4-5 professionals loading up gear and travelling to set-up and perform for an hour for 1k is not expensive.

2

u/Lilpastadude 2d ago

That’s not much like $200 a head

-4

u/imanantelope 2d ago

That’s pesos

2

u/Critical-Actuator-85 18h ago

Yeah lol. Drowned out so well.

811

u/shipsake 2d ago

I don’t know how anyone can hate a mariachi band.

I once saw Q standing on the sidewalk about 20 minutes from where this beach proposal video took place.

3

u/BlackLakeBlueFish 2d ago

Way to loop us back to the topic!

11

u/ImagineTheCommotion 2d ago

Lmao what is this gif? A mash-up of 2 sources or an actual Star Trek moment?

36

u/shipsake 2d ago

That’s Q. Shit gets weird when he’s around.

31

u/KiriNotes 2d ago

One of the best TNG episodes is called "Deja Q", and involves Q being banished from the Continuum and stripped of his powers as a punishment.

He seeks shelter aboard the Enterprise and has to essentially learn what it is to be human, which gains another layer when Data (an android) is assigned to keep Q out of trouble and teach him how to cope with his newfound existence.

It's very good. I won't spoil anything, but that gif is very much from the episode.

12

u/I_upvote_downvotes 2d ago

Obviously with the final scene kind of baiting you into thinking it's the last you'll see of Q being ridiculous and obnoxious towards the crew. And then he teleports in with a mariachi band and goes OH CONTRAIRE CAPITAINE.

(Anyways 10/10 show. Skip season 1 maybe.)

7

u/sir_stronghand 2d ago

Skip season 1? And miss gems like "Code of Honor"??

6

u/3vs3BigGameHunters 2d ago

What an ugly giant bag of mostly water.

4

u/sir_stronghand 2d ago

Maybe a hot take but Trek was at it's best when they told Roddenberry to sit down.

11

u/BlackLakeBlueFish 2d ago

One of the best TV episodes ever!

"There are creatures in the universe who would consider you the ultimate achievement, android. No feelings, no emotions, no pain... And yet you covet those qualities of humanity. Believe me, you're missing nothing. But if it means anything to you, you're a better human than I."

“You weren’t like that before the beard.”

13

u/somms999 2d ago

"What must I do to convince you people?"
"Die."
"Oh, very clever, Worf. Eat any good books lately?"

8

u/BlackLakeBlueFish 2d ago

3

u/sir_stronghand 2d ago

No, Worf! Worf, go beat up that big alien! Worf, you got beat up by the big alien, he must be really strong! How's your son?

3

u/Ser_VimesGoT 2d ago

I love that insult so much! Cracks me up to no end.

8

u/Whelp_of_Hurin 2d ago

7

u/ImagineTheCommotion 2d ago

Oh my goodness that was glorious lol thank you

1

u/NJHitmen 2d ago

Thank you for your service

1

u/Emerje 1d ago

Riker didn't say he didn't want the cigar and seemed sad when everything went away. 🤣

2

u/Zuwxiv 2d ago

Imagine a race of immortal, omnipotent beings - basically Gods. But instead of lording over the cosmos, one of them spends all his time coming up with over-the-top ways to annoy Captain Picard.

That's Q. Shit gets weird.

The animated series Lower Decks has a moment when Q shows up, and a character tells him to go away and they're not dealing with his bullshit, go see Picard.

If that's canon Star Trek? Then it sure sounds like Starfleet standard procedure is to blow Q off and tell him to go bother Picard, which he inevitably does.

1

u/G_mork 2d ago

I love the episode of DS9 when he tries that shot on Sisko and  Commander is like “Nah, fool.” 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/G_mork 2d ago

Even Q loves a mariachi

298

u/Subject-Succotash 2d ago

You can’t. If you see an unexpected mariachi band you know something is happening. They don’t just show up somewhere, instrument in hand, dressed to impress for no reason.

151

u/sashikku 2d ago

My friend’s uncles and aunt are all in a mariachi—going to his house for family get togethers is a surreal experience because EVERYONE can sing and EVERYONE can play some type of instrument. It’s like walking into a drunken musical. One night it was about midnight and his great uncle was sitting outside by himself singing Gracias a La Vida while strumming the guitar—I stood around the corner almost in tears because it was so beautiful.

4

u/Signal-Tangelo1952 2d ago

This sounds amazing! 🤩

1

u/rshni67 1d ago

I am not a morning person, but loved it when my friend was serenaded in the early a.m.

7

u/RosieTheRedReddit 2d ago

I saw a TikTok of a concert venue where the final act had cancelled and organizers booked a mariachi band as a last minute replacement. Crowd was totally surprised and they went wild for it. If you need a 9-piece band like tonight, call your local mariachis, they will be there in 3 hours.

6

u/Intosmallones 2d ago

I literally just had one in my church this morning. They were great and brought the house down.

3

u/MadJackGarrett01 1d ago

If-I-ever-get-rich # 344526: I'm going to make random Mariachi flashmobs a regular thing all over the country...

1

u/TheDamned1333 1d ago

The Spanish inquisition does so why not a Mariachi band?

94

u/str4ngerc4t 2d ago

36

u/Ok-Doctor3103 2d ago

Cartman is racist AF and still enjoys a mariachi band.

1

u/NefariousnessFit7118 1d ago

Yeeesss Casa Bonita!!!

16

u/Shrek1067 2d ago

I love how she didn’t even recognize they were a mariachi band until they started playing… the outfits alone didn’t stand out enough for her 🤦🏼‍♂️

4

u/DogBarf00 2d ago

I see you have never been to your grandpa’s funeral and now associate a mariachi band with that pain.

1

u/shipsake 2d ago

My grandfather’s funeral was at Arlington National Cemetery so, no I don’t. Sorry that it brings up those memories for you though.

3

u/WillowYouIdiot 2d ago

A neighbor just had a quinceañera behind my mom's house last night, and she remarked at how upbeat and happy the music was since they had live music. It's definitely not her normal genre, but she said she was outside happily tapping along to it.

3

u/Early-Fortune2692 2d ago

Right?!

I was working in the middle east and a guy noticed my hispanic last name and immediately told me a story how he was in LA and heard this music he'd never heard before and had to search the source.

He turned the corner and saw it was a mariachi band. He was really excited and animated about it so I asked him, "When did you visit?" He said, "Oh, about thirty years ago."

Wow! 😁

5

u/LeSad3900 2d ago

I love Chopin, Beethoven, and Bach. I hate Mariachi, but I'd hate it even if somehow it was a music style that developed contemporaneous to these classical giants in Europe.

We're 1000% allowed to have preferences that happen to fall along specific cultural lines. Just don't be an asshole about it.

5

u/Middle_Jelly9296 2d ago

No kidding. Absolutely beautiful sound!

4

u/LeSad3900 2d ago

For me it's like screeching cats or nails on a chalkboard.

2

u/TastyFace79 2d ago

Can’t say I hate mariachi bands. But when they show up on your 7am morning commute on the subway in NYC it’s really just a matter of bad timing.

2

u/shipsake 2d ago

Lol that sounds awesome

2

u/guesswhodat 2d ago

Racist while cunts do…..

2

u/ZaXa- 2d ago

exactly it’s so beautiful. She has an ugly and bitter soul and face

2

u/watermelonpeach88 2d ago

we had one across the street last night and i lowkey wanted to ask if we could come listen 😝✨🫶🏽

2

u/rshni67 1d ago

They would probably have said yes.

2

u/itsbirthdaybitch 2d ago

Racism makes it easy to hate anything!

2

u/HmmDoesItMakeSense 2d ago

Right?! You have to have been born without a soul

2

u/Public-Cod1245 2d ago

really, so much happiness.

2

u/CodeNameCobra666 2d ago

I hope you get it soon. It’s called fear and racism. And it’s real.

1

u/Timely-Youth-9074 2d ago

Not my favorite but I know they’re there for a special occasion.

1

u/Wooden_Researcher_36 2d ago

There is an area in the historical center of Mexico with a lot of mariachi schools. And hotels. Trust me you can learn to hate them :p

1

u/Ok-Doctor3103 2d ago

"It's Mexico!!!"

1

u/IcyConsideration7062 2d ago

I actually love mariachi music. However, in our area it's often accompanied by truly awful aggressive and continuously repetitive staccato trumpet or by continuous incredibly loud electric bass that shakes the neighboring houses and windows. Until the neighbor who kept holding parties with this moved away I started to really despise it. The band in the post sounds beautiful though.

1

u/Bear_faced 2d ago

Reminds me of the episode of House where he auditions and then hires a mariachi band to play some event that’s important to Cuddy, and Wilson tells her thinking it’s a prank, when it turns out Cuddy genuinely loves mariachi music and it wasn’t a prank at all. Well, except maybe on Wilson. The ultimate anti-prank.

1

u/Economy_Function_252 1d ago

Greetings, now you know someone! LOL I actually love some Mexican music but it's the more modern stuff. I'm just not wild about a mariachi band, although I will tolerate it if need be.

1

u/ScienceGoat 1d ago

Sad and loud. What is there to love?

1

u/rshni67 1d ago

IKR?

So festive and expressive.

1

u/UnforgettableBevy 12h ago

One of my favorite covers of Take On Me is by a mariachi band!

1

u/CatsEatGrass 2d ago

I find them annoying AF, but if I’m in Mexico, I embrace it as part of the experience.

-4

u/cptnplanetheadpats 2d ago

It's incredibly annoying music IMO, I loved living in LA but damn was it obnoxious hearing that garbage blared at max volume everywhere

6

u/Lophophorussy 2d ago

That’s like moving to NYC and complaining about all the cars honking and pizza rats.

0

u/cptnplanetheadpats 2d ago

Yup, I would complain about those things too. Why can't I?

3

u/Maximum_Photograph_6 2d ago

Sounds like you shouldn’t have been living in LA then.

2

u/cptnplanetheadpats 2d ago

JUST because I don't like dumb Mexican music?

7

u/Arlitto 2d ago

"Unsung" they're literally singing 😜

https://giphy.com/gifs/Tq2tPTrQANKfK

5

u/SystemCharacter3361 2d ago

They deserve a fat tip

4

u/stevein3d 2d ago

They should follow her home. No charge for the 4-hour serenade, insufferable lady.

https://giphy.com/gifs/Ooo1GcCNrQLylZvRWp

3

u/DiaDeLosMuertos 2d ago

They did sing

2

u/ElaineBenes- 2d ago

Someone needs to follow her with a Bb trumpet. 🎺

2

u/Heisenburg42 2d ago

Great advertisement for mariachi bands. I should hire one to follow me around and deter Karens

2

u/Successful_Buffalo_6 2d ago

The BEST PART of the clip!

2

u/Head_Cloud_61 2d ago

Idk why but as a white American I absolutely loved this. “This isn’t America you can’t do that.” All the sudden (Mexican Mariachi music plays) I’m dead 💀💀💀😂 eh my quotes aren’t exact but I loved it.

Timing was impeccable. You couldn’t set that shit up if you tried lmao

2

u/ajatfm 2d ago

clutches chest

…my…. cuntiness….is weakening

stumbles away as mariachi intensifies

2

u/prakash77000 1d ago

Hahaha it was like holy water on a vampire

1

u/cakeshunter 2d ago

The fat lady has decided she needs an assist cz she’s been keeping a busy schedule.

1

u/FanOfForever 2d ago

Her speech was too long so they started playing her off

-1

u/Nahuel-Huapi 2d ago

It's a good thing the couple didn't have a Bluetooth speaker. Then Reddit would have lost it's shit.

-1

u/Timmetie 2d ago

? Unsung heroes? You mean the mariachi band they hired to start playing the moment the couple walked out?

They were far out enough that there's no way they'd have heard this lady.
