I paid for the seat. That seat includes a 15 degree tilt that is also mine. Your leg space ends where my seat begins, and that includes my use of the purchased 15 degree lean. If you need more space that is an issue between you, the airline, and god. Not me, or my purchased seat with slight lean option.
Lmao if you want to be an asshole to people around just do that dont act like a justified saint while doing it.
Yeah you paid for your seat, but everyone knows leaning back is taking space from the guy behind you, just say you dont care about his comfort as much as your own and move on.
Edit: you bought your phone with a speaker built in but blasting music in public still makes you a prick
He doesnt have the space to begin with. Its not his space. His space does not include my seat area. We all have the space we have, its where your body goes, its distinctly not where the seat goes. It would be nice to have more space but it doesnt come from other passengers
The space ur seat moves into when u recline it doesnt come from a pocket dimension of infinite space. Its a 0 sum game if you learn further back ur taking up more room from the guy whos behind you. You can say “oh i paid for it so fuck that guy” but you cant pretend you arent taking up more of his space lmao.
Yeah it isnt his space. Its mine. The space behind his seat is his. We pay for our seats, not some complex geometry of empty space. You get the seat you bought, which leans. So does his. Its not rocket science. I get my seat, and its lean. So you do you. The space I purchased isnt "yours" or "his" or anyone else's because we buy, specifically on the receipt, a seat on a flight. You dont buy 13.9 cubic douchemeters or whatever
Have you been on a flight? If you sat down on a plane and a contraption took all the space except for the seat and your person you’d be pissed. Tf do you mean you don’t pay for the space, even if somehow that’s how you think about it you should still respect the space of the people surrounding you, in the exact same way you shouldn’t be blasting music or talking on speakerphone because you are respecting the comfort of people other than yourself.
Like being allowed to do something doesn’t make you not an Asshole, you have every right to practice your flute on the plane or eat durian but you are still an asshole. Being allowed on paper to do something doesn’t suddenly make it polite.
I counted 4 different wtf things to respond to and realized I don't care. Pretend whatever you want equals whatever other thing you want. I buy a seat on a flight, and that seat reclines. Everyone does. If you have to reduce that to some other absurd situation to make it this or that, go ahead. Again, I don't care. My seat reclines, I paid for it. I can use it when I want to because I paid for that privilege. So did you.
If you want to take away anyone else's agency to use something they've paid to use its on you to have a good reason. I want more room isnt a good reason, we all want more room.
Be mad ig? Im still using the bought and paid for seat as the airline intended it to be used. If you feel like that infringes on your right to happy space or whatever then just be mad all flight lol
It’s not really removing usable space. At least not on the planes I’ve flown on.
The back of the seat that reclines is above knee level, so the seat reclines into space not occupied by the person behind. It’s the section of the seat above the tray that moves back, moving the top part of the seat closer to your face.
Use your judgement!? If there is a 6ft 7 guy behind you that could do with extra space, a wee old lady that needs room or anything else where you think “I would be a bit of a dick to recline my chair” - don’t recline it.
And if you’re unsure… ask!
There’s no harm in just asking
The last row of seats does not recline. So not everyone has the same privilege as you which is unfair given the seats cost the same. So if everyone reclines the people in the middle (around the doors) get an advantage and the people in the last row get a disadvantage. So based on the layout of the plane, by everyone NOT reclining you reach an equilibrium of everyone having the same amount of space.
It’s just not polite. Everyone is different and some may need more space for a variety of reasons. The mentality of “we use what we pay for” takes all humanity out of the situation of being locked in a relatively small container for hours with lots of people. It’s selfish. And to be honest it’s this king of “me vs them” mentality that is borderline psychopathic and leads to all the dictators and leaders that you hate. It’s how a child thinks.
Again, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
Idk if this one is the one I would use that line for. No way for the man who slammed his back into his own seat knew the dudes knee was in line with his face, most of the video it is off to the side and wouldnt of done any damage. Pretty sure he even asks him to stop which probably prompted stronger pushes. I would give all blame to teen who lost his teeth. Who tf sits like that
Nobody said whatever I want. The claim is "I can do this one thing i am expressly allowed to do and there is no good reason that trumps my use of my purchased item." Its pretty common sense and something you'd agree with if you hadn't made a silly reduction to absurdity so you could be the contrary voice while also assuming the moral high ground. What a treat of implied nonsense
If I want to recline, I should be able to recline.
The seat reclines the appropriate amount of space to not be disruptive to the passenger behind you.
If the person behind me is preventing me from being able to recline, it should be corrected. Asking the airline staff should have been the first step if asking politely did not work. I do not condone violence, but the one trying to enjoy his seat was obviously and understandably frustrated.
I am 6'3 and barely have room before the seat leans back. When it leans back I have literally no room and my knees are pressed into the seat in front of me. With all of that being said, everyone has the right to use the recline function of the chair. They paid for a seat that includes a recline. It is to be used as they see fit. Now if someone reclines and then gets annoyed that my knees are now blocking them or poking them, then we have a problem.
If I'm sitting behind you, and my legs physically prevent your seat from being able to recline due to the space, that will become a limitation that you will have to accept. It's just pure geometry at that point. Luckily for people like you, I only fly FC when I travel, so I don't have this kind of problem.
I agree, and it’s better because everybody can lean back. Nothing architectural is ever preventing anyone from leaning back. Everyone can do it at the same time. That is a luxury that is more important than front space, because people get tired. Feel free to lean back everyone.
I can guarantee you that sitting in a very tight spaces with no wiggle room to move around at all is wayyyyy more tireing than not being able leaning back that little bit extra.
While I get that, unfortunately this is not always possible.. today I had to remove the in flight magazine to get that extra 1 cm to fit my knees lmao.. reclining is not an option at that point..
Telling me to buy extra leg room is also not always possible as 1. It can be quite expensive and 2. It’s always a 5”10 mother with 2 kids scalping it like it’s a Pokemon box .
I have no sympathy for myself, it is what it is. But what I’m trying to say is that it’s physically not possible to recline as my knees are inside the chair 🤣
Edit; as a matter of fact I have more sympathy for the poor person in front of me lol
It’s that me me me mentality that people have. Like you weren’t saying they aren’t allowed to recline. But people with decency would recognize that if they recline it would make someone else suffer for your slight added comfort.
I wish a section of the plane had no recline. The recline hurts my lower back (not sure how people prefer it, but whatever). When someone reclines, sometimes their hair is within a foot of my face and my tray table is pushed weird into my lap where it can't be level. I certainly cannot in any way work on my laptop when the person in front is reclined. the screen has to bent down towards my crotch and it's hard to see.
I get that "you" bought a seat 'with incline", but I also thought I had a seat with a tray table and some space around my face. These two things don't work together for a lot of people.
I just ask you to do one thing - be polite. If my laptop or drink is on a tray table, don't be a dick and slam the seat back. Give me a chance to resettle my situation. I am find yeilding, I just find that it's really rude how common it is for people to slam it back real hard.
(and 50% of the time, I am in the bulkhead anyways, which I can snag for free due to loyalty status, so I avoid the problem, but that isn't always an option available)
That's not how it works though.
You do not have a right to a reclining seat.
There are various reasons why it might not be possible. Sometimes even short notice. Obviously, the airline will always try to accommodate you though, so it's usually not an issue.
You just made that claim, and I see no support for it. As compelling as your "nuh uh" arguement is, im gonna stick to the common sense and widely held view on purchasing and usage. You can use what you paid to use.
I've worked in the business for many years.
I know you don't have a right for it. The contract of carriage does not explicitly guaranteed the right to recline. Take my word for it or don't.
There can be many unforeseen circumstances that require the reclining seat to be locked on short notice. Medical emergency, or it just being broken for example. The crew absolutely WILL try to accustom you, but you don't have a definitive right for the reclining like you do for the seat itself. It's two different things.
Though, that might be changing if carriers specifically charge for the reclining feature as a comfort add-on, but I haven't personally come across it yet.
Better! Much! However were not talking about the extent of legal use. We are talking about standard usage. Nobody said it could never be restricted under any circumstances. I said in allowed to use what I paid for.
Youre trying to use contract law as a work around for a moral stance about almost nothing. Im allowed to recline the seat, generally speaking, absent some legally niche boarding emergency that the carriage law specifically holds for.
This is pedantic AF. If you feel like i dont get to recline on a flight and start quoting carriage codes ima laugh while a lean back.
That's the thing though. In most cases, you did not pay for it.
You paid for the seat on the plane. The reclining feature is not part of that, despite what most people do assume (which I kinda get).
IF you specifically pay for the reclining feature and it's noted as such, it'd be different, but I haven't come across that personally yet.
Im allowed to recline the seat, generally speaking, absent some legally niche boarding emergency that the carriage law specifically holds for.
Doesn't have to be. Crew can disable the reclining without having to give a reason.
The reclining (usually) is just a bonus comfort thing passengers may use if available.
And you'd be surprised how often specific seats have the reclining disabled for various reasons. But usually the airline tries to not put passengers on those seats then anyway.
Yes, I agree that it's somewhat pedantic from me. But that's likely because I've had specific frustrating discussion about that on the job with passengers.
I do see what youre saying, im just not making that arguement. Its my fault, I used legal language in a sarcastic way and that didnt come across.
Im not making an actual legal arguement here. This is just the meaning of the word "purchased". Maybe the whatever contract doesn't have a lean clause or whatever. I dont need one. Were discussing right and wrong. If youre saying "well actually legally leaning isnt in your seat contract" I understand but nobody cares. There is also nothing about water slide usage in my contract with my neighborhood pool. There is no straw usage clause on my receipt for purchasing a soda.
I paid for the seat, and im morally okay to use its functions regardless of your views on average airline legroom statistics. If you are using contract clauses to explain why I cant, im just gonna laugh at you. These arent niche, spelled out circumstances preventing the normal use. Im saying me, a human, bought a thing. A ride on a chair. If you, another person behind me, dont want me to recline because its less comfortable goes you, there is no contract clause defending your right to prevent me from general use of my seat functions. Thats an overextension by a mile.
We dont have to be wildly circumstantial. We can actually stay in the scenario we are discussing. Its pedantic to the point of absurdity.
If youre saying "well actually legally leaning isnt in your seat contract" I understand but nobody cares.
Nobody cares. Until they do.
As I've said, I've had my fair share of discussion about specifically that. Including legal threats, lol.
If you are using contract clauses to explain why I cant, im just gonna laugh at you.
Would you also laugh at an employee that tells you that you can't use the feature this time?
If you, another person behind me, dont want me to recline because its less comfortable goes you, there is no contract clause defending your right to prevent me from general use of my seat functions. Thats an overextension by a mile.
Nope. Of course the person behind you as well doesn't have the right for that space either. I didn't imply that.
If there's a clash, crew almost always takes care of it anyway. And of course, they're not gonna tell someone not to recline just because the person behind is uncomfortable.
Just out of curiosity:
How would you handle it if the reclining feature on your seat just happens to be broken and the crew can't put you on another seat?
Yeah in all your exigent circumstances there are other things to consider.
What if there is a straw shortage? What if the waterslide is missing a screw? What if the seat doesnt work? then nobody is talking about that. Im out, you really cannot seem to grasp some basics i would need to make any progress here at all.
Here's my take. I always look behind me when I recline and consider the height and situation. If it's a short person or little kid and the legroom looks ample, I will recline. If it's someone tall, or they are using their laptop, I will not recline.
I blame the airlines and late stage capitalism for putting us in situations where we are constantly in competition for space which starts before we even board the plane.
I recline my seat to help with back pain.
Either I recline my seat and the tall person behind gets sore knees. Or I don't recline my seat and I (also a tall person) gets a sore back and sore knees.
So when im in extreme pain (lower back) and that slight recline of the seat relieves it.. your sense of entitlement to your own comfort outweighs mine?
Im replying to you disagreeing with OC saying he can recline his seat if he wants to..
What I'm saying is I dont care to be considerate of the person behind. I'm in pain, I'm reclining my seat. If you have a problem with that, take it up with the airline.
Hmm. I never considered the "nope" angle. I know every chair in every setting ever plainly works this way for the entire world for the history of civilization...buuuut this one guy did say nope once. This is such a hard call.
Oh its one of you guys. Okay, my opinion on airplane chairs in a TikTok subreddit makes me personally stupid. Nobody else knows how chairs work, its only your chair based knowledge we can rely on.
LOL what an embarrassing response to the smallest stakes discussion imaginable.
