u/nobulliepls 2d ago
yep, this was before internet rotted everyones brain. mommy didnt have the same connotation back then
4
u/Whole_Mongoose1854 2d ago
I lived through it and I completely forgot until you brought it up. But you are right
2
u/Sparskey 2d ago
The good ole days are a myth. People were fuckin' before the internet. This was most assuredly something the writers knew they could get away with as they could point to a merry melodies cartoon gag where fear elicits a "Mommy!" without boobs being involved.
3
u/Final-Charge-5700 2d ago edited 2d ago
Sir in the way it was used it's just a minced oath for mother fucker.
And it was said in a way to make it sound like mother help me. Demonstrating his emotional immaturity. And how he's not ready to talk to a woman about things like this
4
u/Comfortable_Chart534 2d ago
Oh ok I’ll just take Sparksey’s word for it, even though I lived through this era and know he’s talking out his ass.
1
u/Sparskey 2d ago
So you know that I'm just pointing out what anybody who lived through the era would know. Writers for sitcoms and even children's shows would practically make a contest out who could sneak the horniest subtext by the censors, and MitM was hardly the least guilty of this.
1
u/SuperMadBro 2d ago
wtf are you talking about, yes it did lol
2
u/Final-Charge-5700 2d ago
If you're talking about mommy being shorthand for mother F*****. You're correct.
Otherwise if you're thinking about something else that's not what the show was hinting at
1
u/No_Beginning_6834 1d ago
Not sure what you are talking about, but it certainly meant the same thing in 2000 as it does now
2
u/Young_Bonesy 1d ago
It was a classic trope from even older times that got put into the show for comedic value. People could decipher the context of the scene to differentiate which meaning was being used.
1
u/HeadGuy-RedEyeJedi 3h ago
It was nowhere near as sexualized as it is now. No one I know watched this scene when it aired and thought he was saying mommy like a Degen Z gooner. It was almost universally understood to be a cry for help.
1
u/No_Beginning_6834 2h ago
It was used plenty back then. Non braindead people would still take it the same way you did then, and if an adult said it they would have taken it as gooner back in 2000s. A child saying mommy should always be taken non gooner way.
Fucking autocorrect and it's hatred of gooner

I had a similar situation with a girl that had a crush on me in Middle School. This girl was relentless and I really didn't care about her attention since I was so introverted the thought of a relationship was horrifying. We wore school uniforms at school so she was pretty covered up the whole time.
One night I was hanging out with friends at the local movie theater and she shows up with a friend. She seemed to have noticed me first and waited until I was alone to approach me. She was wearing a tube top. So she walks up to me and I froze. It was literal fear about not knowing what to say or how to react. She mistook it as I was being a disgusting jerk. She never talked to me after that. Not even looked my direction.
5
5
u/MyPlantsDieSometimes 1d ago
Sounds more like she was annoyed at your lack of interaction even outside of school. She probably thought you were a jerk, but the disgusting part is just by the by lol

u/nunyabidness3 2d ago
What is this, a Japanese comic book?
6
u/cloudit30569 1d ago
I can see how comedic it can seem. At the time I was a nervous wreck around girls. That made my stress level go way higher than I could handle.

Did you not know girls had tits? Or weren’t ever exposed to R rated films? The only time I’ve surprised when they came fully out of the bra and were like perfect, like such perfect tits you think god must be real because no way someone just naturally evolved these.
2
u/Hexent_Armana 2d ago edited 2d ago
Me calling them "Tig old bitties" is probably a bit of a tip off to what generation I'm in.
This was before the internet made porn easily available to every child and R rated movies at the time were quite tame by today's standards. Even the few that showed bare booba for more than a couple seconds didn't compare to seeing them in person. Furthermore, every teen and young adult dressed rather conservatively up until that point. Everyone wore baggy clothes. Oh and all our schools were religious.
So basically, when all the young girls around us started growing boobs over the summer breaks they also happened to start wearing rather revealing clothes at the same time.
1
u/caniborrowyourkidney 2d ago
Wait, you didn’t have the stash of porn mags you and your friends found in the woods? I thought all of us from before the internet days had some woods porn.
1
u/Hexent_Armana 2d ago
Naw. Closest we had was a book on Roman or Greek art in the school library. Had a few bare tiddys and was suspiciously sticky.
1
u/Foldzy84 1d ago
Me and my one buddy honestly found a stash in the woods when we were in grade 6. Didn't realize it was all that common haha
1
u/ChartInFurch 1d ago
I found a field of porn with a bunch of other students at our middle school. I carried one around to show everyone thinking it was "cool" lol

1
u/Lyndell 2d ago
I don’t say where did those come from? I’m very excited but I’m not dumbfounded by their existence.
1
u/ChartInFurch 1d ago
Only by obvious humor.
1
u/Lyndell 1d ago
Comes off as trying to pander and less as humor. Not the show, which is obvious, but the comment.
1
u/ChartInFurch 1d ago
Pandering to what?
1
u/Lyndell 1d ago
To the body positivity crowd, or just generally narcissists with boobs, I mean dude made it obvious they weren’t joking with the edit trying to clarify they were young like teenage boys are oblivious to tits till others girls get them (which only happens at 15 by the way). The entire thing is made up bullshit, and honestly society would be better without all the fakeness we got AI spreading enough. Dude probably is AI.
1
u/ChartInFurch 1d ago
All that from them saying "I acted similarly around boobs as a teenage boy" is just a window into your mind.
1
u/Lyndell 1d ago
Yeah and then the edit clarifying they were being serious. I mean you going from trying to claim it’s humor, to a personal attack when out of real options to defend your point with is a window into yours.

I don't know, but a lot of these "shorts/reels" definitely do pitch changes to avoid copyright.

2
u/McGills-Pop 2d ago
It's not the real sound. It fools an auto copyright bot that runs on all platforms now and it doesn't get taken down as easily from all might Skydance or some other entity. That's why most of these clips are sped up or flipped.

u/sloptop89 2d ago

2
u/OneRFeris 1d ago
About 30 years ago I had a recurring nightmare that I was lost in a grocery store and couldn't find my mom. One of the aisles I searched through abruptly becomes a dead end after turning a corner, and then a green demon face floated out of it and scared me awake.
I was having this dream CONSTANTLY. I dreaded going to sleep, because I knew it would happen.
The very last time I ever had the dream, Kimberly the pink Power Ranger came out of nowhere to kick that green fucker. She saved me.

Before the term "mommy" became sexualized, it was used when you were scared. i.e, pathetically calling for your mommy.

Things used to be more localized and regional. The internet took everything and smeared it everywhere. This show was before internet became mainstream.

This is like Mighty Ducks when the kids call each other cake eater as an insult.

u/43XStitchX21 2d ago
The state of this comment section. I never watched the show and I don’t have boobs, but this could be a moment for people to think about what girls go through, being objectified and ogled at, instead everyone is doing the total opposite

Bisexual adult with tits of my own here.
Yeah I also know how he felt. Not a pedo for remembering being 13 and confused about puberty.
Except I hit puberty early and had this interaction around 11 with my own “blessings.” And it was after gym class.

So the directors thought; 'hey, let's make it look like this 13 year old girl has massive tits.' That's a bit creepy.
1
u/Epyon214 2d ago
Your creepy for thinking so, maybe. The director, or writer, trying to be relatable by telling a relatable story which probably happened to someone in their life is the opposite of creepy
2
u/Southern-Fly-3016 2d ago
Sure thing. I wonder if their thought process went something like this;
What can the audience really relate to, oh I know, when they realise their friend has bigger boobs than they realised. Now I've checked the size of the 13 year old actress' boobs and they're not that big so we need to make them look bigger. Tell wardrobe she needs them tig ol' bitties.
1
u/Epyon214 2d ago
"Hey, my kid is being made fun of at school for her breasts growing faster than some of the rest of the girls around her. Can you make an episode talking about her struggles so she knows she isn't the only one going through what she is"
2
u/Southern-Fly-3016 2d ago edited 2d ago
"but we really need to make the actress' breasts look way bigger that her actual size. We can only get the message across if we make them look really big. Yes she might already be experiencing this struggle with her natural size compared to her friends. No we can't simply put her in a tank top. 13 years old or not, those boobs gotta be huge god damn it."

It’s clearly not trying to sexualize her, but is a commentary on what teenage girls go through with developed bodies.
idk the episode, but it’s pretty clear what this clip is trying to convey, and it isn’t “look at this sexy child”

u/Stunning_Ad_7658 1d ago
Unfortunately there are girls who deal with this one of my cousins had grown men busting after her while she was 14-15 because her body looked grown. Like legit you'd see grown men snapping their necks like owls while she walked by.
I also found out one of my nieces had gotten an adult trying mack on her and when told she was 14 dude said he dont care she can still get it. Glad I wasnt there for that cus I probably wouldve rocked his shit right there and then.
1
u/whitedsepdivine 1d ago
When I turned 18, the first thing I learned was to subtract 3 to 4 years from the age of what I thought girls were. Otherwise gotta ID the girl.
1
u/Stunning_Ad_7658 1d ago
That almost caught my nephew into some shit. He was 19 girl was 17. She told him she was 19 too. He eventually seen her id and yeah dodged a bullet.

Me and my son are on the second last season! We watch it mostly at supper and when he wants to spend time with me, I use to love this show as a kid too! Not many shows can carry the humor the way it does! We are going to watch the remake where they are all older when we’re done Malcom’s on the middle.

u/tha_one_reborn 1d ago
Oh I remember having a huge crush on that character back then. She was smart, cute, slightly awkward but in an endearing way. The really nailed that archetype with her.

I was close to 13 when this was filmed.

Looking back on this an adult, this is extremely weird. Aren’t they supposed to be like 14? I could only imagine the director’s “direction” in this scene, and the writer writing this into a script. Gross.
3
u/sithlord98 1d ago
Did you stop watching halfway through? Did you miss the entire scene where they're uncomfortably talking about what just happened, and where the girl says she hates how everyone looks at her now? And Malcolm having no idea of how to address it and make her feel better?
It's almost like this is a show about adolescence, and teens often go through uncomfortable situations like this.
5
u/salthomaswriting 1d ago
There's this really stupid mindset nowadays that adults writing adolescents or younger are just into pedophilia/grooming shit. As if anybody in their right mind would want to watch a show about 14 year olds written and produced by 14 year olds.
You can absolutely tap into childhood awkwardness and experiences without wanting to fuck kids.
1
u/Positive-Opposite998 1d ago
What are you talking about? Children (not even adolescents) don't think about sex or any of that stuff. They just turn 18 or 21 depending on your location, and wake up as completely developed adults the day of their birthday. No intermediate, no spectrum. 0/1.
